The short of it, I ran a 3:08-something and an 8th place finish on the women's side. It was a PR by a couple minutes as well.

Great Job, Salty!!!!

Dang, Salty - some FAST racing right there!  Congrats on the PR and a terrific race!

I just wanted to mention a very cool phone call I received over the weekend.  Someone from Rev3 called and said (paraphrasing), "We see you are registered for Rev3 Williamsburg and have done Rev3 events in the past.  We'd like to thank you...(blah blah blah)...if you have any questions about the race or other events you can find us at [FB page], [email], or our website (then he listed the website).  We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks."  I thought it was a pretty cool gesture.  I've always been a Rev3 fangirl and this adds to it.

Wow, that really is pretty cool to reach out to their athletes like that!

I've never done a Rev3 event, but we seriously looked into a couple when we were still in Chicago.

That's too hardcore for me!

That's a dry bag on the back with a down jacket and dry sleeping clothes/spare clothes/warm clothes etc. Up front attached to the aero bars is another dry bag with my sleeping system, which consists off a mat, bivvy bag and a tarp. The saddle is a Selle SMP X Ray. Had to get it because it matched the colour scheme :D

Thank you everyone for your condolences.

So all my tropical races have been without any sodium supplementation. What I rely on is a combination of sports drink (Nuun has one of the highest concentrations of sodium among the various drinks, and is sugar-free and has a very light taste so you can get a lot of it down), gels with sodium (Power Bar tangerine and a couple of their other flavors have 200 mg of sodium per packet), and (only for HIM and long rides) rolling my bike chocolate in sea salt. So I would say that using a dedicated product like Base Salt is not essential, even in pretty extreme conditions; you do need to pay attention to balancing fluid and electrolyte intake, though. That could be done with drinks, gels, natural foods, or other DIY solutions.

I've personally never had serious issues like cramping, vomiting, etc. that are typical of sodium depletion in a race. May have had a few problems in the last miles of this year's IM Vietnam, but that was really due to drinking more water than normal to keep cool (as the aid stations didn't have ice) and not balancing it with additional gu or electrolytes. The symptoms (light-headedness ,tingling in hands, some nausea after finishing) resolved after I drank some more concentrated electrolyte drink. Also possible it could have been due to overheating or low blood sugar (I tend to under-fuel a bit in hot conditions), not a sodium issue at all, and was actually resolved by stopping, cooling, and taking in some calories.

Others' needs may vary. I sweat a lot, and need a lot of hydration for someone my size, at least in tropical conditions, but am not a very salty sweater. That is probably to come extent an adaptation to training in those conditions most of the year for several years. You really need to experiment in training to find out what works for you.

    Thanks Karen
I think it was Janyne who posted this question. But huge thanks for your input, I will definitely take notes.
I'm also wondering: how do you do it with chocolate? (maybe I am just not getting a concept) There is super hot in your area and I would imagine the chocolate would melt even before you get to the bike? What's your secret?

I have done 2 REV3 HIMs and loved the organization.  They were very athlete friendly and made accommodations that other race directors wouldn't.  I was sorry when they left Florida.

Does anyone have any experience with CW-X Stability tights http://www.sportygirlsgear.com.au/product/cw-x-stabilyx-34-tights/

My mum turns 60 next week, and with her new found love of running the 5 of us kids are making a running hamper for her.
Item number 1 on her list is a bling hanger which we have sorted. But at a recent race we did she spotted a lady wearing a pair of these tights and she really liked them, then when she found out about them she liked them even more because her chiro/sports physio lady has been taping her knees for her in pretty much the same configuration as the kinesiology support as these pants have built into them. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

I have a pair of CW-X compression capris (similar to these but mid-calf length) and really like them. I usually use them for recovery after hard workouts or races, and occasionally run in them as well, particularly at home in winter when I wear them underneath a warmer layer. My hamstrings tend to cramp when I run in cold weather and they've been really good in preventing that. I have a couple other kinds of compression gear (shorts, tights) but these are probably one of the most durable and versatile ones.

Chocolate: It depends on what kind you use. Dark chocolate is much better than milk chocolate as it has a lower fat content (thus, melts more slowly). You can also pre-freeze it before riding so it will melt more slowly. I use a particular brand, Ritter Sport, which is marketed for hikers as kind of "melt-proof". Sadly, this is probably because it has palm oil in it, which is neither healthy nor eco-friendly, but it does work for riding in hot weather. (I only use it then, and in races.) It will last about 760-70 km for me in tropical conditions, which at my race speed is about 2- 2 1/2 hours. Oddly, it has never melted on me in transition, maybe due to the pre-freezing.

I was thinking about pre-freezing too. I used 90% dark chocolate (not too tasty, but rich in good stuff it seems) for long runs and freezing worked. I freezed my gummy bears for the last race as well.

I have a pair of their thermal ones that I would use when running outside in Chicago, and other than my arse, they kept me nice and toasty, no leg cramps, comfortable & the compression felt great.

My theory about my rear end still getting chilled is that it's a LOT of area to try and keep warm...

I bought a pair of women's that didn't fit my legs (the knee crossover part hit well above my knee), but granted I have long femurs and not 'normal' woman dimensions!  They didn't fit so I gave them to my pal LT who LOVES them.  I may try getting a pair of men's and see if they are long enough.  I think it's very cool you are doing this for your mom!

Awww,  I just saw on TP that 'old coach' filled out my schedule up until Rev3 Williamsburg mid-July.  I wonder when he did that.  I haven't even been looking at July since he usually gives me one month at a time.  I wonder if he did that post-breakup to be sure I had something in place since he doesn't know for sure I'm moving on to another coach.  I'm touched.  He's not a bad guy, just not the most communicative coach.  He did a good job of writing plans, too, but just wasn't there when I had questions or needed input or help or a kick in the butt, which is mainly why I chose to move on.  There are some other reasons, too, fairly small, but a lot of small things tend to build up to be a bigger thing.

I'm glad to hear that you are being taken care of!  Don't feel bad about making the change.  You need to be in sync with your coach and it sounds like you and Old Coach were just not in sync.  Still, very nice that he wanted to take care of you.

The side of the foot sounds like what I get after a few hours in the saddle. I think it's from where I don't push down with a flat foot but push with the outer edge of my foot instead. I was wondering if I should try and put a shim or a washer on the outer cleat bolts. I get it more on my spd sl than my spd pedals. I tend to walk Charlie Chaplin-esque, so perhaps that is causing me to lean more on the outer edge of my feet.Perhaps you should change your signature to "Not so happy feet".

Don't know if I can add anything better, but sounds similar to what I've had. Occured more with road shoes on both SPD SL and Speedplay pedals than with SPD. For me, I think it was from the cleat position being farther forward on the road setups, even though I had it all the way back. Well, visually it looked like it should be about the same, but the pressure felt like it was coming through in front of the ball of my foot instead of at it (what I wanted). As such, I think my foot would tire more easily and end up rolling onto the side. I needed to keep my feet more balanced & relaxed. That would help push it back longer. With the switch to SPD, it kind of went away. Did several super long rides in them (a couple near 7 hrs and the near 10 hr ride) and not even a hint of the issue. I don't know if that exact switch is the answer, but take a look at cleat placement. A fit was asked about earlier, and this would be a part of it.
