Originally posted by tomsimper I ran a 10k race yesterday and it was so much more fun than a couple of weeks ago, time wasn't great but it was so hot (29C) so can live with that, no shade and the heat bouncing back of the road was a killer. I was seating so much I thought I may have evaporated by the end! Always good though to get a nice T-shirt at the end! God knows how those of you do it who live in much warmer climates than the UK manage.

Congrats, glad it went better for you this time around! I love running in heat and humidity - said no one ever! Really, it's just a matter of what you're used to.

True--will be honest. I can think of very few runs in Saigon that I enjoyed. (That's actually one of the factors that led me into triathlon in the first place. I was training for a half marathon and just got sick of running 6-7 days a week. Started swimming three times a week as cross-training, met some triathletes at the master's group who talked me into my first tri, and the rest is "history"!)

It was often pleasant to get out early AM when the streets were relatively quiet and have some peaceful time to myself, and I got a sense of accomplishment from doing hard workouts, but the actual running, on all but a few rare cool days in winter, was almost always just really tiring. It feels like almost twice as long/far as in a temperate climate.

So I bought tickets for the Albuquerque showing of We Are Triathletes in August, and now I won't be here. So I offered those to friends and have now purchased tix to the Milwaukee showing

In Texas we don't come out of hibernation until it hits at least 25

That looks interesting, too bad the show time here doesn't work for me.

I guess this is one of those "when it rains it pours" kind of weeks for the Manatees!

For me, my rest day (yesterday) went down like this:
1. Husband, whose boss missed the cut in Connecticut, drove home 17 hours. 6 miles from home, he stopped to get some fuel, added 8 gallons to the 1/4 tank he had left, and drove home. Woke up this morning and realized he put unleaded gasoline in the diesel engine. Cha-ching! Then, I called our roadside assistance for a tow. They asked why it wouldn't start/run, and I was honest. But no...they can't tow the Sprinter van now because it was caused by a personal choice. More cha-ching.

2. Husband cleaning out the RV van because the tow truck is on the way and it throwing clothes in the washer, which then throws some random code and won't work. I now have a load of sudsy clothes in the washer.

3. Swam 2500 yards and really struggled with hitting my requred pace (more on this later).

4. Came home ravenous and turned on the oven to throw a pizza in the oven. Heard a 'pop' then a 'crackle.' The oven door then locks closed and it throws an F1 code which reveals that the circuit board just took a crap.

So...probably $2500-3000 total on the RV, a few hundred to fix the washing machine, and a new stove. I had my eye on a new Quintana Roo PRfive with Di2 and race wheels.

On a positive note, I ALWAYS struggle hitting my t-pace at this particular pool. The pool staff swears it's 25yards. I walked it off after my swim, and I swear it's 25 meters. If that's the case, then I hit ALL pace targets during my swim, so +1.

URGH!

And Blanda sorry you've been hurt......

so we were on vacation - went to Alaska. We had fun but a little drama before we left...... Supposed to leave Wednesday June 20th and run a half marathon on Anchorage on Saturday (full for DH). Tuesday night I destroyed my back and couldn't fly so I changed my flight to Friday (everyone else still went Wednesday). Needless to say the race was out but I was still able to do all the hiking and walking we had planned (better living through chemistry). Now I'm back at my desk (BLAH) trying to keep my back happy and start to really buckle down - 12 weeks out to CHOO!

Hope everyone is having a good summer - and happy 4th to the US manatees!

Yep same here. I think that the hottest tri I have done was 42*C and there was no shade on the run course. It was pretty brutal.

Pretty similar for me. IM Vietnam 70.3 in 2016. It was about that hot, no shade to speak of on the bike or run course. And it definitely wasn't a "dry heat".

Supposed to have some triple digit heat here (Idaho) later in the week. But it really truly is dry here (away from the river and until you head high enough up in altitude to get trees again, it's basically high desert--we went hiking through sagebrush last night), and cool enough until at least 10 AM , even on really hot days.

Ran the largest 10K in the world yesterday, it was so much fun! They did an amazing job seeding people and spacing out the waves, so I was actually able to run comfortably from the very start amongst 60,000 other people. I did walk up some of the hilly sections, here is the elevation chart for your amusement.

Yes I learned that apparently it is a big drinking event alongside a big running event! The entire course smelled like beer from mile 2 onward haha! I am not a big morning or day drinker, but it was fun to watch those who were.

What a great race! I would not have dared going outside before 8:00 PM this time of year when I lived in Atlanta. I melted just walking from my apartment to my car.

Powermeter talk.

Ann-Marie - how are you liking the Vector 3s after the initial setup?

Nancy - how are you liking the Assiomas?

Someone in my tri club was asking about pedal-based power meters and I thought I'd follow-up with you two.

I like the Vectors! I haven't had any trouble with them - guess i bought them after Garmin fixed the battery door issue that was apparently causing some issues with lots of users.  They are super easy to transfer between bikes and they are Look compatible, so I had no issues with fitting my set up to the pedal and no clipping in and out issues.

I get lots of power numbers that I assume are correct - now I just have to figure out how to use those numbers in training and, more importantly, racing

Just a quick POL post. Wanted to say thanks for all of the birthday wishes from everyone.

I've recently started training with some degree of regularity and have a couple of races coming up, so I hope to be a better Manatee the next couple of months. Still on the fence about signing up for an October 70.3 (IM NC).

The Assiomas were ridiculously easy to set up, though in order to do so, you have to download the app and connect them initially that way. The app is also the only way to look at how much battery life you have left. Coach seems to like the data they give him, so there's that, too. I don't get all the metrics that the Vectors provide, but I certainly get enough (L/R balance, cadence, L/R torque effectiveness, L/R Pedal Smoothness) that I don't ever care to look at.

The batteries are rechargeable and apparently, they'll last up to 60 hours. I've plugged them in twice since I've gotten them, not that I really needed to as they didn't have half those hours yet. Data seems reliable and accurate, though I really don't have anything to compare it with. DC Rainmakers reviews were quite solid, particularly at the price point.

I have to say that training with a power meter has been a bit of a game changer with regards to getting stronger on the bike. I love the focus it's given me for trainer rides and makes the trainer FAR more bearable. I've never ridden so hard on the trainer, ever.

It's also been a bit frustrating at times when I'm asked to ride as a specific wattage, and I just can't do it on the elevation profiles where I can safely ride.

The ONLY thing I don't really like is that they aren't really Look compatible (my old pedals were Keos). The provided cleats don't clip in as 'neatly' as the Keo cleats do, though I've never had any problems getting into or out of the pedals. I'm sure over time, the feeling clipping into the Assiomas will be old hat.

Attempting to attach a few photos from my long ride today....

Well, maybe not. Nothing happens when I try to submit. Anyway, it was beautiful! Put them in my log instead for anyone who wants to have a look at Idaho bike routes.
