Darren update:

  • He posted the following in the Transcontinental Race Facebook group: "As at 1130 am swiss time. Rider S111 is at tiefencastel. Having problems with tracker still. Please notify whomever. Thanks #tcrno4 #tcrno4s111"
  • This is good to know since his tracker has him at Sumvitg, some ways back.

Heading out soon.  If someone could take the lead in Stalking Darren for the next few days, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'll do what I can, but weekends are a bit less technology intensive for me. My updates will pale in comparison to yours!

If you want a bit of a giggle during the Olympics then see if you can track down some commentary from Roy and HG. They made their debut at the Sydney Olympics with gems like this and they are coming back for 2016.

Dang.  I was holding up a newspaper and everything!

Mini Bio:
Hi, I'm Matt (aka Mr. Matt, nickname given when I got married around the time we needed a distinction between me and our other resident Matt).  Along with my wife I have a stepson, who I would do anything for.

I was a track athlete in high school that gained a ton of weight while being lazy in engineering school.  After graduating I decided enough was enough and got back to running.  During my journey I discovered triathlon and took that as a new challenge to push me.  After finishing my first tri I got hooked and raced for 5 consecutive season.  After that I decided to give road racing a go, but quit after getting locked into a nasty crash that involved a smoked helmet.  Now I casually ride bikes, but currently most of my training comes from weightlifting and/or hitting my punching bag.

So here is the latest from Darren via FB...

Well. I got ruined today. After getting up at 0530 in a public toilet, I then proceeded to put on my still wet clothes for another day in the saddle. Looked outside and it was stil chucking it down. I knew there was still some hefty climbing to do, I just didn't realise how much. After a few diversions to get me off the mountain bike track I'd routed on, again , and a couple of smaller 300-500 meter climbs I started the ascent to the Albulapass.  Holy fudge, didn't see that one coming. Starts off in a town at about 500 meters elevation and climbs to about 2300 meters. I felt like i was on it all day. It was about 3-5 deg C but felt a lot colder with the wind chill. If I stopped for more than 2 minutes I'd start freezing. After all day of climbing I had 30 km of descent down to a town where I'd booked a hotel room. It would have been dangerous to cracking on at 6pm. All my kit, bar sleeping kit, was Pissed wet through. I was ruined. With another big climbing day ahead, I thought it wise to take an administration day. Still managed to cover about 110 miles. It was a bad day today, the worst so far.

I'm a triathlete who's a runner this year.  I've been doing tries since 2012, and have loved the balance of the three sports.  I'm a pretty solid natural athlete, and tend to place reasonably well, though I'm a good athlete, not a premier one.  I'm focusing on 5k speed this year.  Though any Manatee who's been around a while can tell you that I collect running injuries as much as I collect race medals.  Just getting over a ridiculous injury to both of my Achilles tendons.

Sounds like he's in a tough spot. But I know if he pushes through, he'll come out ok.

From Darren's last Facebook update the weather is beyond nasty. He got just over 100 km today and had to take a day to warm up. It's about 4 degrees Celsius. Sounds miserable. I'm thinking he made a good call.

OMG He had me at "after getting up at 5:30 AM in a public toilet". I have done some ROUGH travel over the years but I'm not sure it's ever come to that! In awe of Darren's persistence; hope he gets a warm, dry interlude and some quality rest!

Last 2 posts from Darren discuss a run in with a bee:

Just got stung on the eye by a wasp on the descent from the Italian border. Eye closing nicely. Also, the owner of the b and b must have washed my clothes in something that doesn't agree with me. My saddle sores are itchy as he'll and burning. Ffs

Proper closed up now. Just done another 20 mile looking for a chemist open. Can't get anti histamine over the counter so just got to crack on. I think the itching earlier was my immune system reacting to the poison. All stopped itching and heart rate dropped again.

Hi, I'm Ann-Marie, known around here by some as Hands.  It was bestowed upon me by Yanti after a series of posts by me on-the-one-handing various points for doing or not doing a ride.  When all was said and done, I probably used up about 14 hands!  I'm a life-long athlete, but adult on set all disciplines related to triathlon.  Growing up in Florida, I've spent a lot of time in the water. Unfortunately, none of that time was actually doing anything that resembles real swimming! Turns out I stink at it and during the swim portion of every tri I I am reminded just how much I stink!! Running is my happy place. So, I do a lot of running and associated races.  I live in Orlando with my german shepherd Gunnar, but want to live in western North Carolina. Gunnar wants to live there too.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
