Paying it Forward:
So I have a pair of very gently used Roka R1s in Light Vermillion that I gave a good old try, but they just don't work for my face. Due to the rigors I put them through, I'm not able to return them, so instead would like to pay them forward. If no Manatee wants them, I'll put them out to the internet at large, but wanted to give the Pod first dibs. Only rule: if it turns out you don't like them either, please pay forward as well, as opposed to selling them.
PM me if interested, or send an inspire. First come first serve.

ETA: Sean snapped up the goggles.

I was really excited about the R1's and bought 2 pairs, one for me & one for the hubby... he now has 2 pairs because they just didn't work for my face either.  I hope Sean can get some good use out of them!

Found a 5 1/4" floppy disk in some older stuff at work. Showed it to a few of the 20-something engineers.

"What is that?" - All of them

"It's a floppy disk" - Me

"I thought they had a harder case?"

Guys my age lit up with how awesome it was to find one of these.

Years ago I was in the back of a closet of tech crap at the bank I worked in. I came out with reel to reel tapes in hand. We had no equipment that could read the stuff and no one had any idea why we had it. A bunch of the old ladies in the back office knew what it was though. I, on the other hand, was baffled.

BTW, did you feel like Indiana Jones?

5.25" DSDD? Good times.  My first computer had not ONE but TWO disk drives.  Woo hoo!  And now my watch probably has more computing power...

Definitely a feeling of going back in history, though the tech isn't really quite before my time. Lots of serial cable types in there and was hoping to find one of these.

Janyne, I'd be surprised if it didn't!

Been traveling hard and no time to download the pics to the computer or work on a race report. (Unlike 99% of the population, I don't have an I-phone.) One more day of long driving and will try to post something tomorrow!

It was an upgrade.  I was a student and it was a big deal to have to pay extra for the additional drive. And no, I was not a comp sci student, in case you were wondering. ;-)

Words of wisdom required - Skipping the marathon and going straight to a 50km?

I cant say that I love running and almost loathe running on the road. I want to do a marathon as there are still distant thoughts of IM but frankly a road marathon sounds dull, trails speak to me.

For the last 6 weeks I have been diligently following my 50km plan which is normally 5 runs including an increasing weekly LSD run. I have only missed a single 8km run) I also bike everyday. I am up to 25km on my last long run and the longest run will be 40km 3 week before the race . (its a 16 week plan) All of my long runs have been on easy trails so far. The race I am looking at is a 50km trail run with 4 loops of 12.5km. The course isnt totally flat but it certainly isnt up mountains either.

This is the race I am looking at; http://www.runforthetoad.com/home.html

I will chime in as the group ultra/trail runner. I think it sounds like the plan you are on is setting you up for success. I like that you're looking at a race that fits your strengths. Those loop races are pretty popular and the nice thing is after the first loop you know exactly what you're in for. I think you will be ready and there is no reason you need to do a marathon before you go ultra. It sounds like your last LR will serve that purpose.Go for it!

Can you fill me in a little bit on your running history? Any reason why you want to jump right into a 50K vs running some shorter trail stuff?

I can absolutely understand the desire to run the trails and not the road!

While running on the trails is a lot more...forgiving on the body in my opinion, there is a certain amount of mental (and physical of course) strength needed for being on your feet for 6,7, 8 hours. Depending on the course, running 50K can take a heck of a lot longer than running 26.2 miles on the road. In fact, a heck of a lot longer than running 50K on the road.

Oh and, hello everyone. I popped in when I heard Steve's news but I didn't get to officially check in post ultra-marathon.

Iceland was spectacular and having the sun never actually go down allowed for lots of adventures.

The race was stunning to say the least. I need to take some time to do a full race report to do it any justice.

I was very early in my tech career, so while I knew what reel to reel was from a sound system standpoint, why they were in a bank was confusing to me. I have since learned the error of my ways.

I have since begun my search for punch cards.

i LOVE trail running, so i understand how this would appeal to you more than a road marathon.  I will say that although more forgiving on your body in some ways, trails are harder in that you use more energy running them than running on a road.  When I run trail races - the longest being a 25k, I like to have my longest run longer than the race.  But I understand that with ultras that may not be the norm.  TJ is the ultra trail runner here, so she can probably speak to this more intelligently than I, so take what I say with a grain of salt!!

Curious about this too. Ultra stuff can take a lot longer and have a LOT more variation in completion times. A friend just finished a pair of 50M events and did the second about 4 hrs faster than the first (per Strava times). The first was the A race. The course was just that much harder. I totally get wanting to go to trails. If I ever go marathon or longer, it'd be trails as well, so definitely not saying to skip it. Just making sure of what you're getting in to.

Also, would throw out the thought of running a marathon to prep for an IM. The IM run is not a marathon race. It's part of a larger event and is ran differently. More important would be to just learn how to deal with a lot of running. Something like what you're doing can do that for you.

I did the 5 peaks trail run series a couple of years ago which was mainly 12 - 13km runs, some of which were fairly rough. This year I have done a 10km trail run and my Xterra race also had a 10km run. Last year I did the Xterra Ontario series. In training for the past 6 weeks I have done a 15,18,20,15,22, and 25km run all on trails. I have also done 1/2 marathons in the past and did do marathon training but went on a kayak trip instead of running the race. Current training load, including biking is about 10 - 12hr/week for the past 6 months.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
