OK, a few quick highlights:

  • The Jelly Belly factory had a wine/chocolate tasting.  We don't do a lot of wine, so no wineries for us. If I did it again, I'd do wine tours. Heck, you could do a week of wine tours and barely scratch the surface.
  • Safari West was worth whatever we paid for it. Ann got a Groupon. I had low expectations going in, and it exceeded them without a doubt.
  • Campgrounds is tough because we did 2 nights in Upper Pines in Yosemite, a night on Wright's beach on the Pacific ocean and a night in Samual P. Taylor, sleeping in a redwood grove. All were good, but Yosemite was a total highlight for me, but Wright's Beach was pretty cool too.
  • San Fran was a quick hit, so we didn't do too much. Alcatraz was interesting and disturbing.  A lot went down on that rock. We wandered through China town, had ramen at Ramen Underground (yum!), hit the Ferry Market, did Fisherman's Wharf, had an impromptu tour of a bakery, etc. I'd probably rate Alcatraz the highest, just for the historical perspective.

I think I simply enjoy the historical and the awe inspiring. Living in the flattest of flatlands made the mountains seem that much more majestic, I think.

ETA: Ask Lisa about winery tours, her trip looked like it was more focused on that.

Hi folks.  Just wanted to pop in and request to be taken off the DL.  While I'm very gradually getting back into the swing of things and my activity is fairly limited, I am mobile and have managed to get back on the trainer and am increasing my walking distance.  Almost ready to try a test run.

I'm super busy at work after just returning from two months off so my time is pretty limited.  I've managed to occasionally follow along with all the goings on here and miss very much being more active here.  Hopefully all things will get back to normal soon.

What brings up the decision to wash it?  Is it covered in mud/bugs/crud or you are just asking about general care?

If it's super muddy, I'd recommend lightly hosing it off and using a light cleaning spray and a rag to clean it.  When it's dry, relube the chain, derailleurs, etc. and it will be fine.

General cleaning?  Skip the hosing off and do the above.  If there are a bunch of bugs I may let the soapy spray sit on those areas a bit longer.

Personally I use a big bottle of bike wash I got at the LBS on sale, but I think Simple Green would do the same thing.  When the cleaning is done, I also like to spray a little Pedro's Bike Lust on and wipe it down just to add a level of protection and shine (it's a silicone-based protectant).  Just be sure not to get Bike Lust on your rims as it will make your brakes work less good, or if you do get some on, wipe the rims down with a rag with Simple Green (or whatever cleaner  you are using).

I was doing some tire changing lessons, so my face was far closer to the gears and chain than ever before. Its all black! I know there's supposed to be lube on the chain so everything works properly, but I realize I just have no idea what I'm doing.

Yes, he's on an amazing vaca with TW.

Wait until you see the van they rented!

Here is the Google album of the trip. It is a work in progress, roughly 350 pics that I need to clean up. You know, if you are completely bored

Chris, I admit I just glanced through, but some really great photos!  The giraffe: "Whatchoo lookin' at man?".  Love how the insulating sleeve was used for beer AND coffee.  Looks like a wonderful trip!

Reminds me, I'm only partially on the DL now.

Can spin on the trainer, as long as my breathing doesn't get too heavy.  Some activities that involve heavy breathing are worth it, but not necessarily the trainer.

Foot isn't broken, just really mashed.  Couple or three weeks before I can try a test run (unless I follow doctor's advice as well as usual).

Rib isn't broken, just muscular/tendon sprains, so can get back in pool in 4-6 weeks (see above note on how good a patient I am).

Elbow needs surgery, but doc said just deal with the pain and don't complain until I can't stand it, then he'll cut (a real charmer, this one).  No steroid shots, as he doesn't want to muck up his eventual surgical field.

Think I might both get way more serious about PT on the elbow and also consider a new doc.

Could you specify the problem with the doctor?

ETA: Though I am a bit confused on both needing surgery and seeming to wait as long as possible?

I don't use them except if I'm having a problem with my Achilles, but i like the CEPs. I have a pair of Zoots, but they are too tight which is probably more a function of having the wrong size than how they work, but the next size up would be too big.

If I use anything for recovery, I use a pair of Zoot recovery tights.  I love them.  Too bad it is generally too hot for me to wear them as often as I'd like!

For training (probably not racing).  I have Zensah calf sleeves which are fine but the socks crush my toes!

You may recall I got some Vim&Vigr and Sockwell compression socks to wear to work.  Love them!

Also, I just like socks.  Yes, I'm weird.  And yes, my calf sleeves are a boring black.  I'm not sure that any training socks would be fun colors or not.  I don't want to hurt anyone's eyes!

I generally just wear the sleeves when I have to use them, but I do have a pair of the CEP socks and did not have any toe crushing, but I've never worn them for long runs.  I know someone who wears compression socks and her toes have been getting crushed lately too.  I've read something about that being a real issue with compression socks, so I don't know that it is brand specific. Maybe everyone whose fee hurt is wearing the wrong size

Your love of crazy socks reminds me of being in my Catholic high school.  Since we had to wear uniforms, all the girls went crazy with the socks we wore! I've continued that to some extent into adulthood.  More likely than not, if I'm wearing socks (other than for running), they have some sort of design.

My favorite compression socks are my CEPs. I've raced in them and have used them for recovery. I also like my Zoots, but not as well as the CEPs.

I have a few other brands, but because I'm short, the socks are too long and are uncomfortable.

For everyday wear, I love my SmartWool compression socks.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
