Pre-race routine:

2 scrambled eggs and tortilla chips! Rode up with Mark, Mary Beth, Mike M, Mike M (2) and Terry. Race day registration. Great to meet up with the BT folks...Bryan (mndiver), Jim (birkierunner), Rodger (rabkaman) and Tom (Matchman). Talked mostly about off-season training and upcoming events. Saw John and lined up with him at the start.
Event warmup:

Ran outside to use the Porta-Potty.
Run
  • 1h 53m 35s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

Kept short quick steps up to about mile 4. Long gradual hill up to mile 6. Yelled a quick hello to Jim at mile 5 1/2. He had already hit the turnaround and was headed back. Felt really good at the turnaround, but knew I needed to slow it down if I was going to finish strong. Started losing steam about mile 11 and 12.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Business trip to Chicago knocked out about a week's worth of training last week.

Hold myself back despite feeling strong at the halfway point.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to Mark and Terry. Ate everything in the feed bag.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

Great chance to meet up with local BTers and realize that I need to continue building base.

Nice job Sal.  I know what you mean about the travel. Tough to keep the training up on the road.  Great to see you and the other BTers out there.

Way to get out and do a January race - especially a half and your work travel schedule.  And I think that was faster than my half pr.

Great race, Sal! I'd say that's a pretty darn nice start to '08. Good to see you again. We should do another BT Burrito Lunch soon.

Cheers!

zipp1 - 2008-01-26 7:25 PM Nice race, That's a sweet time!  (I'll be thrilled with a 2 hr half mary for my first one in April)

Judi, I'm sure you'll do just fine!  But definitely don't follow my example.  Here's what I wish I HAD done before this run:

1. Get my training volume up.
2.  Focus on run AND bike.  Your bike volume shouldn't be a detriment.
3.  Do just a little bit more speed work (faster 5K distances).

When you're 4 weeks out from your race, give this a try:

www.runcalculator.com

It will give you a 'predict' based on your most recent 5K time, and your run and bike volume.  Did you need me to nag you the next 2 months?

Hey Sal - sounds like you had fun!  And the weather really couldn't have been better for you guys, in my opinion.  Great job as usual.
