Irving, Texas

Playtri Festival
46F / 8C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 02m 32s
Overall Rank = 98/139
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/36
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5am. Dressed and Ate 1/2 a bagel and 1 Ensure.
Event warmup:

Short run just to warm up.
Swim
  • 37h 36m
  • 2112 yards
  • 1h 46m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Did really well drafting to the turnaround bouy and then started going all over the place. My goggles were fogging up and I couldn't see. Stopped to rectify the situation but it was too late. I lost my draftees. Women started first so the men came up behind us and that was a little disconcerting but they didn't run us over too bad. Getting out was challenging. Since you don't normally swim in this lake they had to build steps but there wasn't a hand rail. After that you were running forever (300-400) yards to transition on feet that were like blocks of ice.
What would you do differently?:

Get in the water sooner to pre-spit goggles so they don't fog up. Keep doing speed sets. I really can't complain too much this was a decent swim for me.
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

What a mess...it was so cold and windy that I put my toe warmers on (pre-race) and decided to wear arm warmers, gloves and my headband that covers my ears. Well I knew it was going to happen but had to try. Putting arm warmers on wet arms doesn't work. Could get my hands in the gloves either and finally threw them on the ground and said Suck it up and got out of there. Could have EASILY gotten to my 6 hour goal by sucking it up a little earlier. :)
What would you do differently?:

It was VERY COLD and WINDY especially after the swim. I felt like I would have permanant goosebumps for a while. :)
Bike
  • 3h 10m 57s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Freaking Wind...did you know that Dallas is the 3rd windiest city in the US? :) I think somebody moved the first turn around on the second loop. Felt like I was spinning forever. Got a little complacent thinking it was just around the corner and went into Z1 knowing that when I hit the turn around it would be BEAUTIFUL! It was a little further than I remember. :)
I did really well staying in my HR Zones. I passed absolutely NOBODY on this bike which really started to tick me off but I reeled myself back in.

Nutrition: 3 hour Infinit concentrate bottle, water, 1 Uncrustable at 1.5 hr mark. I only drank two of the 3 hr bottle but with the uncrustable I think I was right on target. No bonking problems.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Even if I was willing to go to Z3-4 it would have been counterproductive in the wind.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Good Transition. Had to catch my balance a couple times but not bad. This transition area was really long and narrow and I was near the bike entrance but had to run a bit to get to the run exit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 2h 08m 1s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Stayed at 135-138 for the whole run. I haven't done 13 miles since last September with all my issues so I really wanted to be cautious here. In the beginning for once I felt great! Normally my lower leg is really tight but this time I was ready to move except my toes still being frozen. Which took 5 miles before they finally were completely thawed. Anyway, I felt great till mile 8 and then I really had to focus and suck it up. I did a 10/1 run walk and I've never had a hard time starting to run again after walking but at mile 8 I really had to push to get it going again. Started skipping my walks to just keep shuffling along. With .25 to go the back of my left knee had me hobbling and wincing with each step. Met up with another guy who encouraged me to keep going when I stopped to rub it out. His exact comment escapes me but he did mention HTFU...I knew he had to be from BT. It was Brian (Karhooligan). Too funny. Made me laugh and suck it up and look like a pro coming in across the line. :)

Also had chafing problems under the arms. I would have killed for some bodyglide. Also need to remember to rinse my shorts better on the ride before I transition into the run.

Took a Gu 15 before I got off the bike. Alternated Accelerade and Water. Took 2 endurolytes 30 min into the run and two more an hour later. Gu at mile 5 and 10. Made one potty stop on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Stay healthy and get in more long runs. Carry one of the small body glides in jersey pocket ...just in case. :)

I would have loved to be faster on this run but considering everything I did exactly what my training would allow me to do.

Post race
Warm down:

Hobble over to transition and load my stuff up. The wind was bad for the race but even worse as the afternoon wore on. I couldn't stand it anymore and left before the awards and didn't even realize I had won anything. :( I checked before I left but the results hadn't been updated.
I'm amazed I placed in anything but the open or elite wave was racing for money so that pulled a lot of people out of the AG categories.

Overall very happy with my nutrition plan. I'll keep tweaking it.

Event comments:

I'm not excited about this race. I probably won't do it again. I like more scenic courses not business parks for the ride. Transition is also behind a large bank building. If you have family coming there is literally nothing for them to do while they are waiting for you. Most of my races have been at parks or fun venues and my family has never come to watch. This time they decided to come and didn't have much to do. Volunteers were very slim at this race as well. However those that showed did great. One exception and I'm sure it's not the volunteers fault but rather a lack of instruction but the sports waterbottles were still closed when they were handed off and I had to twist and bite the top off to fill my water bottle each time and with the wind it was very dicey.

Nooo..that was my brother Brian (bkarhu, not Karhooligan (now livestrong) that told you to HTFU!  heh  He started 4 minutes behind you and finished 4 minutes faster, so he was stalking you the entire race.

I do think we chatted just before getting into the water...everyone was wearing wetsuits and caps, so I can't be sure, but some nice woman I was chatting with made the same comment about Dallas being the 3rd windiest city to me.

Great race!

Chris

sorry I missed you this weekend but it sounds like you did a great job of following your plan for HR and eating.. that's pretty impressive right there..

glad you liked the scenery of dallas [las colinas] cough cough.. irving.  and that route amplifies the wind,, we did a group ride out there and three people got blown off their bikes..

Kelly,

For clarification, I was needing some self confidence myself to finish up the run...hence the HTFU comment.  I had been "suffering" from a left quad ailment from, oh, say about mile 2 and that last 1.5 miles seemed like an eternity to get through.  I hope in some form or fashion, I assisted with you being able to finish the HIM in high spirits.  I know it helped me to say HTFU to you.  lol.  Funny that at that very moment, with the hundreds of athletes, we "found" each other and you recognized the acronym and assumed I was a BT'er.  That was cool!  You smoked the run.  Congrats!

Brian (bkarhu)  lol

Thanks for again reminding me that this sport is not just about speed! I guess I was just feeling down on myself for my lack of bike training. I am not too concerned about the swimming, as it just isn't my thing, but I wish I would have gotten in a little more bike training. You, on the other hand, had an AWESOME race! You obviously stuck hard to your plan and it worked for you. Good luck at IMCdA! I keep thinking that I really want to go up there to spectate, but I am just too afraid that I might actually sign up for next year and with three kids and work, I don't know how I would find the time to train.

Great job staying within your zones...that will serve you very well in your Ironman.  Just imagine your time if you were "racing" rather than training in this race!  ANd yes, the 4 mintue transition is where you could have made your sub 6 goal 'cause everything else was done beautifully   Great job girl!!!!
