Ironman North America
Sunny
Total Time = 14h 33m 38s
Overall Rank = 1147/2027
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 229/353
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at site plenty early, loaded my water (frozen) and Powerade (still mostly frozen) and stuffed my Bento box full of gu/gel/cliff blocks/fig bars. Dropped some more food and stuff in my transition bags.
Event warmup:

swim towards start line.
Swim
  • 1h 18m 41s
  • 3862 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Great volunteers helping us out of the water and stripping wetsuits. Thanks!!!
What would you do differently?:

Make the the turns closer to the bouys. I went wide to avoid the worst of the crowding, but it cost me time and the chance to draft a bit more.
Transition 1
  • 08m 40s
What would you do differently?:

Have a towel and water bottle to rinse feet off. Would have saved time and feet would have been a bit more comfortable later.
Bike
  • 7h 39m 29s
  • 112 miles
  • 14.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Burned too many matches on the bike, especially the 2nd loop (tailwind made the first loop faster). Some aid stations started running out of bananas by the last loop so I didn't eat as much. I also didn't eat enough gu/gel on th last lap 'cause it was not a flavor I had tried before and my stomach was starting to feel funny.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a few more gel/gu things that I like in my jersey.
Take it easier on hard loops.
Transition 2
  • 06m 41s
Comments:

Didn't need to move bike once I got off, bike handler volunteers were right there. (Great job guys!!)

Drank some ice water.

Volunteers with the sunscreen were AWESOME. Applying sunscreen to people that have swam in a stinky lake and then biked 112 miles in 90+ temps is NOT a pleasant job, but they did it with a smile on their face and wished us well as we set off on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure of anything.
Run
  • 5h 20m 8s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Talking with others, encouraging others and thanking volunteers is a great way to take your mind off the 114+ miles you have already gone. Even a slow run pace is faster than walking and will keep your total time dramatically down.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit more earlier in between aid stations.
Post race
Warm down:

Puke then walk around and drink water and cols.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach problems.

Event comments:

3% body weight change is Sunday morning to Monday morning, so it was probably a bit more before post-race pizza and snacks.

I shouldn't read these IM reports, because reading what a great job CactusTriathlete did is going to make me want to enter one of these things, insane conditions and all.

Congratulations!!

Steve-

I was starting to get worried. I was watching the clock while handing out medals wondering where you were at. Next thing you know, you're there.

Great Job Ironman. It was a pleasure to see you cross the line.
