Extreme Veteran 573 Sherman Oaks, CA | Subject: RE: Bands that jumped the shark mr2tony - 2008-06-26 1:01 PM ``Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.'' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwnsz0WqHp0 this post is a joke, right? |

Then came the wonderful Pyromania that literally set the world on Fire. Hysteria was actually not too bad, considering they had a one armed drummer, and he was a blast to watch in concer. Quit impressive actually. After that, total and utter crap. Then Stevie died and it really started to get ugly. |

Master 1696 Surprise, Arizona | Subject: RE: Bands that jumped the shark A few years back, I would have agreed with both U2 and REM. However, U2 became relevant again with 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' and REM has captured some of their previous glory with 'Accelerate'. As for Liz Phair (one of my favorite artists of all time) - let's say I'm still waiting for evidence that the last album was just a joke orchestrated to put her kids through college and she will return to her prior work... |

I have only heard a few of the new songs but I saw them (Stipes & Mike Mills) giving an interview and it was incredibly pretentious. They are still in my top 5 of favorite bands but they should go back to their old style. If you ever have a chance try to rent/see Athens Inside/Out. The early REM & Athens,GA days. Brilliant. |

Where did you get that grid? The sales numbers for "Exile" seem rather on the high side..Certainly more than I would have guessed.. |

Master 2485 Atlanta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Bands that jumped the shark It's tough to say sometimes..Neil Young/Bobby Dylan/Elvis Costello all have pretty bland stretches - Anyone remember ReAcTOr and Trans? - followed by years of incredible creativity. I think it's true that 'classic' acts have a much harder time getting people to listen to their newer stuff..Folks just want the nostalgia trip. My best idea for the list would be Elvis P. Two great years followed by, well, it was generally pretty bad.. |

I doubt that in the first couple of years after it's release it sold much, but since then it makes just about everyone's most important albums list, and that residual effect was pretty strong, I think.run4yrlif - 2008-06-26 8:21 PM Where did you get that grid?
