they say you can not change your tire but you do see people do it. There are grassy medians in spots and other spots people just hug the wall close to you. If they catch you they may dnf you.

pay attention and avoid the potholes.

x2.

However, there was a guy selling this junk at the Expo that is like fix a flat but for bike tires.  Small booth, tall guy.  Can't remember his name for the life of me, but he was making a small fortune selling it last year.  If you are that worried about it, get some of that stuff.  Might be worth the extra $ to not DNF.

thankfully I have never flatted in a race yet, but like carrying an umbrella prevents rain, I believe in being prepared!

The first time I did this race my chain came off during shifting. So I stopped and fixed it and a race marshal went by on a motorcycle and asked if I was OK. Somehow, unless you're blocking the road or something, I doubt they'd f with you. Of course the one time you think they won't is when they acutally do.

Well I never did until my last HIM. So you never know. If it happens though remember to start screaming in german and throwing your wheel around. That is what I did and it helped. (ok I got lucky the sag wagon came over and fixed it for me.)

Interesting you will see other races helping racers fix tires during the race but that is usually from charity teams.

Also interesting is seeing women racing in swim burkas.

Hi All...I am local and would be up for pasta dinner somewhere...how many takers do we have?  Friday or Saturday???  I have PT on Friday night but would be up for Saturday, or a dinner on Friday after 6:45.  I live up north near Wrigley Field...so I could just hop on the train to come down and meet any of y'all staying in the hotels???

How is the bike course? Flat, fast? I've been to Chicago, but it was a long time ago, pre-tri's. No real memory of Lake Shore Drive.

I loved the city!

Thanks,

-TJ

Mostly flat and fast. The only "hills" to speak of is the bridge over the river at the beginning and end of the bike course. There are a few rollers over some side streets but those I would classify as slight grade changes rather than a hill. Flat and fast, but watch the pavement condition, its tricky. Additionally if its like the last few years passing is done on the right and the cruising lane is the left, they reserve the inside lanes of LSD so passing is opposite and it seems nearly half forget this and are all over the place, watch for people popping out to the right. When passing at any point, I am always calling out "on the right".

You are correct on all parts.  There is a hill right out of T1 that is all of about 75-100 meters long that will get your HR up a bit, so make certain you have those gears down for easy pedaling.

Then there are a few easy rollers over side streets, but truly nothing major.  However, the potholes could be a totally different obstacle.  It was a particularly brutal winter here this year, with record setting snow falls and of course, tremendous snow plow traffic.  They have supposedly fixed most of the pot holes, but I've still seen a few.  They usually do a very good job of marking them with cones and spray paint, though.

Just keep your eyes up while riding and above all, have fun.

Hey kids, I'll be down there, too.  I'm not sure what my plans are.  I DO know that I'll be wandering around the expo about 4ish. I have to meet some people at 5:30.

I'll be in a pink camo skirt carrying a big ol orange back pack.  Holla if ya see me.
