Total Time = 24h 00m
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = Solo All Male
Age Group Rank = 2/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am and finished loading full Jeep. Pulled into pit area very early and tried to figure out how the race worked. Once that was sorted out, I just sat in a chair and took a little nap.
Event warmup:

Warm up for a 24 hour race? You've got to be kidding.
Swim
  • 4h 00m
  • 6180 meters
  • 03m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was crowded on the first lap, then wide open after that. My goal for the race was 15 triathlons, so I decided to do 16 swims in order to have one bonus little swim.

The worst part of the swim was the repetitive runs back to transition and then down to the water. This took as long as the swims themself, and it got pretty tiring to run in the heat in a wetsuit. I think that the total distance run in a wetsuit over the course of the event was close to four miles.

I really didn't want to be changing in and out of my wetsuit, so I was determined to get all of my swims done first. I took them very easy, and it was cool and nice in the water, so it was a good strategy. It took until noon to finish these swims, so that was a bit wild.
What would you do differently?:

I had the juice and time for a 17th swim, which I should have done early, or perhaps at the very end.
Transition 1

Bike
  • 12h 00m
  • 179.2 miles
  • 14.93 mile/hr
Comments:

This is the longest distance I've ever ridden a bike. My butt hurts. I started riding at noon, after the swims, and kept going until I was finished with 10 full laps, or an Ironman equivalent. At one point, a bee flew into my jersey and stung me, as if to say, "You're an idiot."

Wrapped up this first big batch of rides by about 8:30pm, as the mosquito's came out in force. This helped me to run faster, because I didn't want all of the blood sucked out of me (it would have taken them about 10 minutes, I think).

After finishing a marathon worth of runs, I started riding again, this time on the Eddy Merckx road bike with lights attached. This was one of the smartest decisions I made, because it was more comfortable to be out of the aero position at night, and I probably went faster. Also, I now had access to my compact cranks, which turned out to be crucial because by the end of the fourth loop my legs were so spent that I could barely grind up the little reservoir hills. Eddy made it possible.

Toward the end of the race, I figured that if I played my cards right, I could get 16 complete triathlons in (or 1.5 hours per tri), so I hopped off the bike at 15 triathlons and started running. When I hit 14 runs it was back to the bike, where I could seriously barely pedal around the course. My feet hurt like Hades, and my legs just couldn't push the pedals anymore.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a motorcycle.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 8h 00m
  • 41.6 miles
  • 11m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Started running after ten bike laps, and finished a total of ten runs (marathon/Ironman equivalent) at midnight. After five rides, I started running again as the sun came up. Pretty cool to hear coyotes yelping at the dawn. Managed to fit in three runs at this point, and went back to the bike for a final, 16th lap. With about an hour to go, I needed to do two runs for a total of 16 triathlons, and that was pretty straightforward.

I was leaning into the runs, and thinking all night that I was running pretty fast, but as the sun came up and I could actually see the ground moving under me, I realized that the hardest I could run was probably around 12 minute miles! I was hunched over and barely moving, but it was all that my legs could muster. GI distress finally hit me mid-way through my 16th lap, but a portapotty suddenly appeared, and I was safe.

There was a little boy at the aid station turnaround early in the night who was so excited to be volunteering at the race that he was bubbling over with enthusiasm. I think that his energy and encouragement really carried me through the night.
What would you do differently?:

I've never run 40 miles in one sitting before, and I'm amazed to have survived it. I don't think that I could have done anything differently here other than get some therapy in lieu of entering a race like this.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed the finish line and started loading all of the gear from the race into the car. When the race results were published, I was surprised to see that my little 16 laps turned out to be a pretty good race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Faster? It's 24 freakin' hours! Why on earth would anyone want to go faster? This is just a matter of survival for me.

Event comments:

Okay...this is pretty much the coolest race going. I entered the race because I accidentally saw a sign for it just three days before the start. I had no idea what I was getting into.

Having said that, seeing how far (or if) a person can carry their carcass over a sprint triathlon course over 24 hours is an unbelievable experience. To do it solo, with no support, added another layer of independence and challenge.

At the end of the day, I finished in second place for solo racing men overall, behind a pretty incredible professional triathlete. I just can't do any better than that, and this experience will remain one of my life's great highlights. I can't thank Ian and the race volunteers enough for making this possible.

Great race and report. 16 tris is a long way. I agree the boy volunteer really was energetic and that energy certainly rubbed off. I have about 50 mosquito bites. How about you?

I wish I had known you were solo without support. We had a great spot right next to the transition out and my Dad could have helped you with anything you needed. As it was I think he was a little bored and might have enjoyed having more to do.

Congratulations on a great race!

Great job!  I saw this a little too late myself and it looks like a blast.  Not sure I would want to go solo but if I had some friends I knew doing it also that could make me change my mind.  Again...way to go terrific job!

That's just awesome.  Unbelievable that you were able to do that many tri's in one day...especially alone.  Incredible.

Congrats! We had a couple of BT teams there for the co-ed 8-hour relay, and had a great time, but felt kind of bad leaving after the 8-hour awards ceremony when you guys were barely even scratching the surface of your racing. Nicely done.
