Subject: Where in GA do you think a race should be that isn't?

5k, 10k, half, marathon, tri's (sprint, Oly, HIM, IM) or bike races?

The other night I had dream there was a marathon in Athens, Ga. I think that would be a great place for a marathon. Little hilly but it could finish and start at the Stadium or downtown to the staduim or something like that. I bet it would garner a bit spectating crowd.

I also think Cumberland Island needs a trail running series. But I know they limit visitors so I doubt that will ever happen.

And I think Roswell needs to put on half marathon. Really, I think we need more half marathons.

Anyone else ever think about this?

I think Atlanta needs a HIM.

Athens would be great for a marathon or a HIM.  Especially if they let the kids drink outside.  That tends to increase participation.

I'm interested in these responses since I'm currently looking into bringing an oly & a kids tri to the Atlanta area for 2010.

Unfortunately, the water at Stone Mountain isn't healthy for swimming.  The park closed the beach several years ago because the water was constantly testing unhealthy for swimming.  If this weren't the case, I would love to see a tri there.  Even a Stone Mountain Duathlon would be cool.  I think there was one there in the mid 90s.

I don't know.  There are lakes all around here.  Maybe, this one right next to Atlantic Station:

It looks perfect!

I was really excited about the Georgia Grit race at Lake Oconee.  That is a fantastic venue for a race.

What about a race in Roswell at the Chattahoochee? Are there any places safe for a swim event (without rocks/bridges/etc)?  Then we could do the Bike Roswell route for the bike and run along the bike paths!  Fun!

I was thinking along these lines, too... or possibly Lake Windward in Alpharetta...

Stone Mountain would rock (hehe).  Where could you cycle the 56 miles required for a HIM? Not very familiar with the area around SM....anyways, it could be fun.

They use to--like in the 80's--have triathlons and duathons there. I know this because my parents did those races. Well my mom just the duathons, she can't swim. Anyway, I had wondered why they didn't have them anymore.  I remember my dad getting some serious road rash from wrecking inone of the bike races.

I'm still trying to figure out why we don't have more than one triathlon (Acworth) in Lake Allatoona. Tons of parks and the lake is pretty big...

I think Lake Allatoona, or where they do the Acworth womens sprint, is as close to Atlanta as any Triathlon is going to get.

I would love to have a point to point Silver Comet Marathon. 26. 2 miles, one way, 100 percent on the trail. January or Feb date. I would even settle for an out and back, but again, 100 percent on the trail.

Sweetwater Creek Park occaisonally has races..Not far outside the Perimeter but no idea what the water is like. Perfect environment for up to an Oly.

They had a (super?) sprint triathlon at Sweetwater this year. It is a very nice park. I didn't see it advertised a lot though.

Sweetwater has signs that say they can't monitor the Ecoli in the water so no swimming! Yuk.
I too would like them to bring back the alatoona race that was a good tough oly race.

Sweetwater Creek State Park -- will be perfect if the water is safe for swimming. Just 15 minutes outside ATL. I think it would be a great location for a Powerman or long distance DU. The run will be around the various beautiful trails and bike course out from park on route to Silk Sheets and back to the park.

Yes, there's a sprint tri at the state park in early June. Done it once -- 200yards/10mi/5k .... no bike racks.

Again, a DU at this venue would be sweet.

Cheers

Ron, I might have imagined this but don't they have a 50k on the silver comet during those dates?

I wish that there was a HIM in Savannah. Unfortunately the logistics don't work very well on a central venue. You could do a point to point and start out at Tybee, but that ties up US 80 which is the only way on and off the island. Everything else around there is too gator infested for my tastes.

We talked about this during Six Gaps and couldn't agree more ...

It would rank up there with Wildflower and St. Croix as one of the toughest HIM's in the nation.  Can you imagine starting out at Vogel State park, riding Wolfpen, then Woody and then the "flat lands" to then ascend and then descend Woody's to the park?

After that? A trail run around Blood Mountain.

The problem would be the limited amount of hotel rooms to house the race participants.  Wildflower is a little unique in that they built that whole hippy, camp-out flair ... not sure that state park could handle that (or would even want to) during peak campaign season.

They do have an ultra sometime in early Feb. It's a low key event. I'd like to see a traditional, chip timed Marathon on the SCT. I have talked briefely with others about doing the ultra, but that was quickly shelved.

As a fellow UGA fan...given this years performance I don't want to swim, bike or run anywhere near a GATOR.
