Pre-race routine:

Transition opened at 0430, set up, Sue braided my hair (pre-race ritual), drank a Diet coke (also pre-race ritual).
Event warmup:

Walked around looking for the BT girls
Swim
  • 11m 44s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

While I was standing in the swim start, the girl next to me started freaking out. It was her first tri and she was terrified of the swim. I related all to well !! I talked to her for a few minutes, but she was afraid she would quit. There were a lot of women who stopped well before the first bouy--and that didn't help her confidence. I told her I would stay with her to pace her. GET THAT!! ME!! A swim pacer!! LMAO!! I talked to her the entire swim, and she did great!! We got to the last bouy, she was so excited that she was almost done.

Sally Edwards was in the water at the swim start, getting everyone pumped up!! That was incredible too!! :)

What would you do differently?:

Absolutley nothing!! That was an awesome feeling and I'm so grateful to her for allowing me to pace her!! She helped me probably more than I helped her!! :)
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

There was so much mud in transition, my cleat was full. I never did get my right foot clipped in.
What would you do differently?:

?? maybe try to stomp off the mud in the mud ??
Bike
  • 33m
  • 10.25 miles
  • 18.64 mile/hr
Comments:

Rode the first 1/4 mile trying to scrape mud out of my cleats, finally got the left foot clipped in. Rode the entire time with the right unclipped. It slipped off a few times.

I got stuck behind a group of mountain bikes on the way out and back in the "no passing" zone. Speed was reduced from 23 down to 8!! Felt like an eternity before I could pass them.

There were a lot of newbies who didn't understand the term "on your left". I would yell on your left, and they would swerve left! Almost crashed numerous times!!
What would you do differently?:

Push harder to get around the mountain bikers.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Run
  • 20m 32s
  • 2 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Had cramps in my calves the first 1/2 mile or so. After that, felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink so many margaritas the night before!!
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a little bit, cheered for the remaining people to come in. Hung out with Sue and her parents until transition area opened. I DIDN'T THROW UP AT ALL THIS RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sally Edwards ran in with the last person. She was talking her up the entire way!

Event comments:

This was a good race. There were a LOT of first time triathletes that brought a new dimension to "racing". Trying not to get slapped/kicked as they dog paddled, swerving into your way on the bike, instead of out of the way, etc... BUT...it was a fantastic event to raise money for Breast Cancer Research and it was a fun little race through Disney.

Very cool.  You obvously have a very kind heart.  Most people would have just tried to cheer the girl up and gone on their way.  You, however, stuck with her till the swim exit.  That is quite noble of you.

I don't know if you experienced this or not, but I was very spoiled by St. Anthony's.  It is a great race and so well organized that its sets your expectations very high.  I found that when I participated in the next tri, I was constantly making comparisons, "Well, at St. A's...."  Its kind of a letdown when follow-on races don't have all the same amenities.

Your bike split was great considering you only had one foot clipped in.  Your run split was great considering all the Tequila the evening before.  Is that your new pre-race routine?

All in all, great race report.  Sounds like this one was good for the soul.

Awesome RR Wendi.  You're awesome for being a swim buddy for that girl.  Great bike leg and great run.  Holy crap.  I'll bet those elephants and giraffes enjoyed the heck out of watching you. No seagulls this time around.  I'm so proud of you.

Great race today Wendi and many kudos for being so kind to that other girl.  You  made her day I'm sure.  Congrats on no ralphing too!!!    Although, with all the margaritas you drank last night I'm amazed you kept them down!  Great job!

Thanks so much for posting this. It sounds like a fun outing. As a newbie, I'll take to heart the concept of not swerving in front of people when they yell "on your left." :-)

Congratulations, PT Girl!

Cheers to you for helping that woman get through her swim...I'll bet she feels like a million bucks for overcoming her fear.

What a wonderful thing to do!  The Danskin races are such a positive experience for first timers, and it must have meant a lot to that woman having you help her out.  I haven't done one in a long time, and when I did do the races I was perhaps too focused on trying to go fast, but I remember hanging out afterwards and watching the later finishers come in.  There was always such a positive energy out there for those gals.  Sally Edwards is such a terrific role model, and sooooo encouraging.

I know what you mean by the post Saint A's let down.  Nothing quite compares to that event.

Great report, nice job in the swim.

I will have to remember the "on the left" call if ever I race in the States as down here in Oz we say "on your right".

like the pic's too, how could you not love that bike, read here "very jealous".

Hey Wendi! Sounds like you all had a great weekend. Wish I was there. Like Karl said, I was also making comparisons to St. A. That was just an awesome race- I doubt any others will compare to that one. You are such a sweetie to help out another triathlete in need! Good karma will come back to you now. Congrats on NO PUKING! Woohoo!!!

Wendy, you did awesome! I can't wait to be like you and Sue when I grow up in Tri-land. We looked for you after the race but couldn't find you. We saw Marcy and Sonya but couldn't find you, Sue or Brooke.

So glad you helped the newbie....that is very kind and good things happen to good people. Glad you didn't loose your cookes or should I say your Cliff or maybe I should say your Margaritas!!!!!! ha, ha....j/k

Take care and hope to see you at one of Matt's open swims soon.

HOLY COW!  You got to be the swim guru AND kept your breakfast down???  I'd say that in itself is great strides<img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/wink.gif'>!  Excellent job.  Sounds like you had fun overall (except the mud and no passing zones!).  I've never heard of a no passing zone in a race.  I guess it must've been pretty narrow.  Anyway, you were triumphant, as usual.

Congratulations on a fantastic race, a great weekend with friends and the BT girls, and raising good money for an excellent cause.  Not to mention keeping everyone around you smiling, as usual, especially the girl on the swim....

And 18.6mph on the bike with one foot clipped in AND a long ol no passing zone?  You've got an ENGINE, girl...

What an awesome thing to do, pacing somebody on the swim to help them overcome their fears. That is so cool I can't even find the words to express it.

Congratulations on the race.
