Hey full IM finishers, for those of you who did, how long did you wait before you ran, AND COMPLETED, you next marathon? There was a previous thread on recovery times but I'm curious as to how many folks have actually completed a marathon post IM. (Although this is my 1st IM, I love to end the season in style [running a 4 hr marathon, I usu. recover in about a week's time].)

I intended to run a marathon in the fall after my first IM, but decided to go with the half option.  And I didn't even train very well for that.  It was difficult to get motivated for the training.  Of course, I had planned to try to BQ so I wasn't looking to "just finish" (which I'm sure I could have done).  So, I guess I waited about 18 months after my first IM.  This time, I will wait about 7 months.  But this time it will be in Boston and I'm not worried about a BQ time.

IMLP in July of '08.  Baltimore mary. in Oct. 08.  No real specific marathon training for the race, just kept up running.  It showed as I really got pooped after 21 which is normally not the case when I'm trained well for them.

Its already been touched on but there is a good chance you'll be zapped mentally and will have zero desire to even run long again for awhile. I found anything over an hour run was both tough mentally and physically (high on the rpe and hr scales). You could easily jump into a fall marathon and finish, but probably not to your potential.

Instead of finishing the season 'with style' I would start next with style instead, maybe a late Winter/early spring marathon. Take some down time - recharge the batteries.

I waited about 11 months....I'm not even entertaining the thought of a marthon post IM #2 though. They hurt.

I'm signed up for a marathon one month after B2B.  I'll let you know how it goes.

btw, I'm more than willing to bail before the race, at the half way point, or at any point.

I did a hilly 50k trail run about a month after MOO 07 but i loves me some running and did the run as a fun yet challenging day on the trails vs trying to hammer anything.  there were a few others that did MOO a few weeks before that did it as well.  if you are planning on enjoying the day vs racing it AND your recovery is pretty decent i would say no problem.  i can say that as it was my first IM though that i felt i left some stuff on the table first go around and maybe my ability to do a race would be altered by pushing it more.  will let you know on that a few weeks after MOO this weekend!

I thought about doing a Mary after this IM but have changed my mind. I'd rather do a run focus without pressure of a race just run a lot and see if it helps my running.

Don't under estimate how strange you may feel post IM on top of the world but your body is tired of training, following a training plan and so might your mind. It is really a strange dichotomy.

I did IM FL in Nov 2007, and then ran the Austin marathon in Feb 2008. I'd have to check my old plan for details, but I basically took most of November as just active recovery; then jumped into the marathon training. PR'd and qualified for Boston, so it worked out pretty well Recovery from IM is tricky, though; different for each individual - and very dependent on how well you trained leading up to the race in the first place.

I did IMWI last year (Sept. 7th) and then did Vegas on December 7th.  So, exactly 3 months afterwards.  I took two weeks off of no running (did swim and cycle a bit, but not in the first week).  I ended up Boston qualifying, by using my fitness from the IM.  With that said, I did not have the run I wanted at IMWI, and i think that left less time for recovery.   I would not cut it any closer than 3 months, though...  the 2 weeks off was a MUST.

Did IMFL November 1 last year and WDW marathon January 9th. Had spent most of the year swimming and biking as I am a runner to start. Didn't run my fastest time, but still ran a BQ time and had fun. Felt good.

I am signed up for a marathon exactly 1 month after IMFL.  This is my first Ironman so I am a little worried about what I will look like a month after.  Just hoping that I can ride the fitness I have built during the year through both events.  I plan on doing a lot of resting inbetween with a little intermediate running.  I have run marathons before and this marathon is a charity event, in addition it will be the first that my brother and I will run in together so I am not too worried about time.  On the flip side I hope I don't crash and burn.  We'll see how it goes.  Good luck.

I did IMCDA on June 21st this year and did IMKY in 2008.  I essentially have been IM training for over a year.

I'm doing the Chicago Marathon on October 11th.  To be honest with you, I'm very burned out right now.  It is a struggle for me to get the runs in each week.  Physically, I'll have no problem with the marathon.  It is the mental and motivational part that I'm struggling with.  Just be careful on the burnout aspect of it.

I did IM Moo in 2007 and ran Twin Cities 26.2 three weeks later and got beaten badly by the heat.

I did IM Moo in 2008 and ran Whistlestop 26.2 four weeks later on a cool day with NO running in between and felt good.

Anything is doable as long as you set expectations properly!

I attempted the St. Jude Marathon exactly 1 month after IMFL last year.  Got to mile 14 and was in serious pain and also not mentally there.  My only DNF.  I was counting on my conditioning.  I think next time I'll wait at least 2 months.

Last year I did IM Louisville and then Great Floridian IM 8 weeks later.  Guess that counts as a marathon.  :-)  2 months seemed like enough time to recover.

I did IM FL in Nov '07, followed by a marathon 6-7 weeks later. I ran the marathon with a buddy to support him doing his first, at a pace 45 minutes slower than my norm. After 16 miles, I was pretty miserable ... even at the slower pace. It just wasn't enough time to recover for me.

I'm doing the Chicago marathon in October, which will be 49 weeks after IMFL. Honestly it took a good 6 months for me to mentally want to train.

Next question.....just did IMWI, my first, and am signed up for IMCdA in 9 months.  Boston is in April, and I do have the BQ time.  Everyone - would you do Boston?

72 hours post IM....i'm wiped out, obviously.  Don't know how long that will last.

My first marathon took alot out of me, so I would probably need more than 2 months between a full mary and an IM.  I am going IM 8/09, full mary 1/10, IM 6/10.  I am also only 2 years into tri training, so my base is less forgiving than others with a longer history.  However, I am not BQ fast yet either so I don't have to face that dilema either.  Hope to see you at CDA 8).
