Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap I'm not a doctor either, but I did have some irritation just at the top of the knee like you describe once. You may have something totally different but this website (http://www.ualberta.ca/~alester/conditions/patellarfemoral.html) offers an explanation and also suggests some other alternatives. Edit: In my case, I simply cut back a fair amount on distance and intensity for a week or so before gradually rebuilding. You might consider starting your run tapering a little early. Good luck. Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap trishie - 2009-11-01 7:57 AM thanks again, everyone. It feels a little better this morning, I think. Question... can I (should I?) swim today? I'm going to skip my 90 min ride, but I'd like to get in the water... You are going to kick or worse slip on the pool deck. Stay home watch a movie, give it a extra day to clam down. JMHO Joe |

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap I'd take a 2-3 days off from the run. Maybe swim instead. Rest and Ice. Your next run should be an easy 'test' run to see how it feels. Edited by furiousferret 2009-11-01 12:14 PM |

Pro 5169 Burbs | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap Thanks again, all. I decided - as much as I want to - NOT to swim today. Like Joe said ^^ I could slip on the deck .. Giving it a total day off won't hurt it, and missing one swim won't kill my training (PLEASE CONFIRM THIS ! ) I though about going to the doctor tomorrow but I don't think I'm going to. I don't have a good sports med doc I like, and everytime I go to my PCP about a running related pain (last time it was my arch), I got the same thing: RICE. Oh, and "running is bad for you. You shouldn't run anymore." I'm going to buy a bag of ice and keep icing this sucker. Will also pick up a brace --- ideas on what kind? Or should I just get an ace bandage and wrap it? |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap If it were me I'd get in the pool just to get something in. Do some pull sets or some such. But I'm sure rest wouldn't hurt either. Sorry your doc always says not to run . That is why when I was shopping for a new primary care physician I read up on a ton of doctors bios and made sure to pick one that had a lot of athletic stuff listed. Mine is a competitive volleyball player... Sending some healing vibes and good juju your way... |

No missing one swim will not kill your training. Hope its feeling better. DOnt' go to your primary care. My experience with primary care guys is that 98% of them dont' know how to do a musculoskeletal physical exam so they tell you to not train give you and NSAID and order an MRI because they don't know how to do an musculoskeletal exam. Try to get in with sports doc. I don't know anyone in Baltimore but I'm pretty sure you won't go wrong with Johns Hopkins and I would be willing to bet they have a sports med program. IF they have a long wait to get in ask to get on a cancelation list. Make the appt. IF you get better you can always call and cancel. Also you can try the AMSSM web site I think there is a link on this site or http://www.sportsmed.org or http://www.aossm.org |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap Take it from me: If it's still hurting...rest it. (This is all making me flashback to popping my hamstring 20 days out from Vineman.) At a certain point--and four weeks out from an IM sure seems like that point to me--if you've injured something, rehabbing is likely more productive than training. I tested my injury one too many times and paid for it with a setback 48 hours before the race...I'd have stayed off it entirely if I had it to do over again. |

Pro 5169 Burbs | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap thanks, everyone, for your support. the knee is definitely better -- less pain and the pain that is there is less acute. I have ice at work and I'm icing 20 minutes of each hour. also have a knee brace (compression sleeve) that I'm wearing. I'll make a doc appointment if it doesn't continue to heal, but for now, RICE seems to be working its magic. and I bought two (cute, of course ) pairs of flats ... no heels for this girl for a while. |

Could be tendonitis. Like everyone says, rest, ice, compression for support. Also, if it's doesn't hurt your knee, try doing some quad stretching. Tight quads can mess with your knees. You may want to try some of these exercises (http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_jumpersk_rex.htm). (I think these are good exercises regardless of whether it's patellar tendonitis or patellar femoral syndrome, or your IT band.) Edited by kvesey 2009-11-02 9:58 AM |

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap Glad it is feeling better. I did not see anywhere that you mentioned there was swelling, just that there was pain. Is the pain localized anywhere? I have had knee problems for a long time (first it was a cartilage issue from HS Wrestling) then it was an IT band issue. If you do not have swelling, a lot of pain and bending it after it has been motionless hurts it sounds a lot like what I have/had. Do you have a roller you can use to stretch the IT band out? (if you have never used one before on a tight/sore muslce/leg be careful, it will hurt almost worse than the knee) Just a thought there. |

Fishers, IN | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap I would minimize the running for awhile until the swelling is down. I ran a half on a torn catlidge before. The doctor said go ahead and run and schedule an appointment afterwards. He said just take some NSAIDS and plenty of water, but the race would not really hurt my injury anymore if the inflammation was not too bad to run. Focus on the swim and bike. Get in some running after things get better. Best wishes. |

New user 19 Fort Collins, CO | Subject: RE: oh crap. crapity crap crap I thought I woulda add that I had bad knee pain for about 6 weeks, saw my dr, she had no idea so I had a massage and it turns out it was not knee problems but really tight muscles in my hip/glut and the massage therapist worked on it for about 15 mins, and i havent had any pain in my knee since. it was amazingly effective and i highly recommend going to get one! |

When I was getting close to my IM, I was feeling aches and pains all the time just from the volume PLUS, they were magnafied due to stress. |
