Pre-race routine:

Didn't sleep well all week. In fact, I have missed a lot of sleep in the last few weeks. I go into this race exhausted, but that "is life". I know we/I am lucky to be in FL and able to stand on the beach to continue this journey, and I am very thankful for all our blessings.

Went to bed at 9:00pm. Woke up before the alarm...happy to finally get a good nights sleep. Looked at the clock - it was 11:16pm (only 2 hrs 16 mins sleep). Man, needed to get more sleep before this race. Tried to go back to sleep. Slept off and on, finally got up for good at 3:00am.

Showered. Ate cereal and a bagel with p/butter. Drank Gatorade and a coke.
Event warmup:

Went down to race site (7 min walk). Got body marked and got my bike set up. Dropped off special needs bags. Getting nervous so went back to the condo to calm down and put my wetsuit on. Put on wetsuit, kissed the kids, and headed on down to the beach.

Have had a lot of "life things" happen in the last few weeks. I have been told to put everything out of my mind on this day except for IM. Easier said than done.

Comments:

Stood on the beach with so many emotions. However, there was so much going on that I really didn't have a lot of time to think/reflect.

As soon as I got to the beach it was time to get lined up. Before I knew it the pros were going off...we were to start in 10 minutes. Started about forth row middle (someone needs to be there) - towards the front since I feel strong in the swim. Cannon goes off and we run into the ocean. A few steps in I fall forward. After a few folks trampled over me I started having a panic attack - afraid I couldn't get up - I was just swallowing water. Seemed like forever, but I got myself up and started swimming. Breathing every other stroke just to get in a rhythm and try to calm down. All the hits and kicks didn't really help calm the nerves (it was crazy) but I finally calmed down. The swim stayed crowded until we got around the first turn buoy. Rounding the first buoy the sun hit us right in the face making it hard to sight, but it was less crowded. Rounding the second buoy it was crowded again...where the heck did everyone come from? Swam in and hit the beach, the crowd was fantastic. Ran back into the water for the second lap. Less crowded, so I stretched it out and just tried to relax.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.....
Different position?
Stay upright :)
Push the second lap.

Comments:

My stripper was awesome! One yank and he had my suit off.

Took my time in the change tent. Didn't feel it was necessary to hurry, afraid I would forget something. My helper in the change tent was awesome...wonder if she was related to my stripper :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 6h 25m 11s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.45 mile/hr
Comments:

Hit the bike feeling good. I was doing IM Florida, had an ok swim, and now on to the bike ... the journey continues.

First 4 miles went well, and then the packs started to fly by. Didn't mind the packs flying by...to be expected :) so no worries. Everything felt pretty good. Riding at a 19-20 mph pace (good for me) until I hit Hwy 20. Hwy 20 has rolling hills and we got head winds. For a lot of Hwy 20 I was riding 14-15 mph. Hwy 20 was my "not so happy" place. Hit the aid station at mile 60 and decided to stop & pee. Handed my bike off to a very nice volunteer and hit the port-o-let. Went to get my bike back and couldn't find it. The volunteer had given my bike to someone else. The "other" rider came back (his bike was nicer than mine) and we exchanged bikes. I took off and my bike was in a very low gear. For three miles I could not get my bike in a higher gear, I was just spinning. Thought "Boy, this is going to be a long end to the bike". Finally got my bike into a higher gear. I am happy that the last 39 miles I avg'ed 19.17 (good for me). Never really had any issues, and the shoulder pain that I have dealt with for the last three months was kind enough to not surface during the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time on the bike and keep getting better
Transition 2
  • 06m 49s
Comments:

Once again, took my time in transition. Didn't want to forget anything...too close to the finish :)
Run
  • 4h 45m 52s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Run felt good out of transition, had legs right away so time to go to work and finish this baby. Mile three didn't feel right. By mile 4 I was sick to my stoamach and had to walk some. Mile 5-8 walked a lot with a little "run/shuffle effort" mixed in. I knew I would finish, but I was really upset that it would end on this note. Mile 8 - 13 were really bad, I was really sick to my stomach. I threw up right before the turn around and then at mile 14 hit my special needs bag - thank goodness I had put something for my head (I never get headaches) and my stomach in that special needs bag. By mile 15 I was running and feeling really good. I ran the entire last 1/2 except for 1 stop for chicken broth (I wanted to taste it - I've heard so much about it during IM) and for one last port-o-let pee stop. The last 12 miles felt great, obviously as I ended up negative splitting the marathon.

Seeing my family at the finish line was incredible. This was truely a family celebration. We have had a year, and this is one moment that we all earned!
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with the family at the finish for a while. Then we went back to the condo, all went to the jacuzzi, then showered and headed back to the finish line for some more celebration and fun.

Event comments:

This has been one heck of a year for our family. We have had several "things" come up...some pretty serious. But, we continue on. This Ironman belongs to my family as much as it does to me. They have made as many sacrificies as I have. If it was not for their support there would be no way I could have done this, and it would not mean as much.
My husband - the little nudges when that early alarm goes off...the "I'm proud of you" when I am "complaining", or that little wink :)
My kids - who at age 5, 7, & 8 can tell you so much about training, swimming, biking, running, & Ironman. And their desire to run and start doing triathlons - inspires me.
My parents - that understand & support my desire to do this thing called Ironman and ask daily "what's on the training schedule today?"....then just listen.........

There is also another group that has helped me along this journey. There is a "little group" that many BT'ers may have seen (it is at the top of the mentor group section every day). Yep, the SWBKRUN mentor group. This is one heckj of a group with some very special people...all of which have helped me along my way! Thanks guys, you are the best!!!!!

Super awesome race! What a fast swim split, too, especially after falling over and getting trampled on in a swim. And they gave your bike to someone else? I wonder why the other athlete took so long to notice that he rode off with it for a while. Great performance getting thru challenges of the day.

Ironman!  Great report, I always love the unexpected things that happen during the race.  Who has ever heard of someone taking the wrong bike?  Funny.  Very happy for your family too.  You guys needed that victory.

Linda - So so so happy for you! You had a great race and it was probably that much sweeter for you considering where you were a few weeks ago. Congratulations! Sorry we didn't get to meet up down there - would have been nice to chat a bit

Wow - what a great race!  I'm so happy that everything worked out in the end.

BTW - I think the crowd of people in the swim on the 2nd lap came from the fact you were so fast and caught up to the slow swimmers.  :-)

Proud of you for toeing the line after a tough few weeks prior to the race.  Many people would have abandoned due to those circumstances.

So you are starting to figure out ways to save some time on your next IM!

Good Job!

That was so funny watching the live video Saturday night.  I got back to the hotel and had nothing ready so I'm figuring I can get my stuff together while its running.  Well I get a text that Trin2Bfast, a good buddy over here, was done but I missed him because I was getting my stuff ready.   By now I had three run splits for you so I sit down and get out this sheet of paper and started crunching numbers to "figure out" when you'd be in.  Then I realize it doesn't matter because I'm not getting up and missing this.  So I'm watching the feed and every once in a while glance over at my bike or transition bag and think c'mon guys get moving, I got a race tomorrow.

So now every time a blond woman is coming down the chute I'm like OK is this her.  It wasn't the best quality video, let alone trying to recognize you from a few pics.  Then Reilly would call someone else's name and I'd sigh (or swear ;-)) .

Then just like that, there you were.  It was so funny because I knew it was you before Reilly said anything.  Even funnier or maybe ironic was not to far behind you was another person I went to Buffalo Springs with that I was tracking.

Anyways, you know what I think of all this.  You're AWESOME and that's that.

You are an IRONWOMAN!!!  Way to go!  I thought of you during the swim and realized you were watching the same sun rise from the same ocean as Chet and I were, very cool.   I would have freaked out about the bikes. Great job. And I am so happy for your whole family. I hope things continue going well.  Lets go for a "fun" ride sometime.  NO TRAINING WHATSOEVER!!!!

Congrats!

Well executed race and you had some obstacles to get to starting line.

Nice to negative split the run. Hope to remember next year that some parts of bike have headwinds and it should come back on other parts pf the course when we get some free speed with help from the wind.

Yep IM is a family journey.
