The shoulder patch with the mascot came in two varieties -- brown-skinned "black" Trojan or pinky-beige skinned "white" Trojan. This so bothered a Jewish friend of mine that he protested by selecting the black Trojan. He grew up to be a rabbi.  College was the California Golden Bears. GrrrrrrrRAH! |

It was better than our arch-rivals, the Sidwell Friends Quakers. It was hard to be intimidated by a mascot who espouses non-violence. |

Our high school mascot was a black panther and our girl's cheerblock would cheer "PANTHER POWER!" during games. Was a bit surreal for an all-white, upper middle class high school during the late 60's - the same era of Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and the Black Panther Movement.

Undergrad school had a beaver for a mascot (oh, believe me, there isn't a joke I haven't heard about that one). Grad school wasn't much better--we were the gophers. What were yours? Crusaders and Pioneers Only way you can make those any worse is by adding horrible uniform colors to the mix... So they did. Crusaders had yellow (nick named bananas) and the pioneers decided to go with baby blue and yellow. Ironically they had pretty good sports programs despite the efforts to hurt recruiting with these choices. |
