Pre-race routine:

drove down saturday afternoon to check my bike and pick up my packet. bike check was canceled due to the weather so i grabbed the packet and hung out for a few other BTer's to get there for a swim.

The peeps showed up and we went for a dip. the swim was in galveston bay which is shallow but windy. Bad combo if the wind is blowing right, which it was.

Water was 2-3 foot. not huge by any stretch but man was it fun! siting was a challenge and it was a little comforting to see erin's green cap or ritter's shaved head next to me when breathing. stephen you swim to fast man! this was my favorite part of the weekend next to finishing with the kiddos and jarrett.

sunday morning was the first sign things were not gonna go right. alarm was set for 3:15 to meet justin. one of my dogs was sleeping up by my head. he farted about 3:10. worst fart ever. not only did it wake me up but i had to get out of bed to escape it.

showered, ate a bowl of raisin bran and hit the road.
Event warmup:

ran .5 mile with. first time wearing my new top. damn if my beer gut wasn't popping out of it. yeah yeah, nothing new raceday.

walked over to the boats with justin and andy. gave justin a high five told him he sucked and got on our boat.

boat ride out to the start was awesome. we were the third boat, ~140 people per boat to go. so we got to watch the first few waves go off.

Swim
  • 34m 40s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

i knew from swimming the day before to site off a light house and a then a big brown house. what i was really interested in though was what the currents were doing. so after watching the first two waves go off i knew it was left to right. just to make sure i walked into the wheelhouse and asked the captain what he thought. yep, left to right.

finally, our boat pulled to the start. we had 140 in our wave. andy and i were standing by the door so were were first off. i immediately headed for the left buoy. got there and after waiting for a few minutes was very surprised to see that not many people joined us over there.

i started up front left side. great start. i got out fast so here was little contact. and apparently that was the last thing for this race that i did well.

this swim seemed to go on FOREVER. seems this was general consensus afterwords.

the little swell and the wide open course made it difficult to find someone to draft off. i looked and kept looking but we were just getting bounced around.

don't think i ever really found a groove. sometime i was tired and others i was feeling good.

one thing i'm really pumped about is i never gave sharks a thought. i'm getting more comfortable swimming a long ways in different waters.
What would you do differently?:

swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

i had the fastest T1 in my a/g. thats good.

swim out to transition was a 2.5 block run. LOOOOOONG ways.
What would you do differently?:

kiss any hot chicks i see. if i'm first then i have a few seconds to spare.
Bike
  • 1h 25m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.54 mile/hr
Comments:

i don't know. its easy to type things in the swim part of this report but i don't know what to type here.

it took me ~6 miles before i was comfortable. i'm sure it had to do with the bridge. i did pass more people then i usually do. but still got passed a lot.

i don't even know what i was thinking coming out of my shoes. i think i took my right shoe off 2 miles before transition. the breeze did feel nice through my toes though.

What would you do differently?:

bring my bike on the boat with me for the swim start. jump in with it. then get to transition and throw my hands in the air wondering why someone stole my bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

ha! this is the one part i feel good about for sucking. i never looked at my row from bike in while setting up transition. shame on me. so when i arrived in transition i went down three rows looking for my bike. people were cheering for me when i found it. awesome.

i went down the first row i thought i was on. wrong. second row. wrong. third row. amen.
What would you do differently?:

seems i should should put up a half dozen balloons. and hire some and giraffe or something to stand their so i know where to go.
Run
  • 1h 01m
  • 6.2 miles

Comments:

i don't know. just horrible. i just don't know what happened here. really there is nothing to say.
What would you do differently?:

run.
Post race

i was really bummed about my performance. pretty much i sucked.

Great time as usual hanging out with you John!  Nice job on the swim, you were rockin!  Hitting that bridge right out of transition and then having to hairpin, u-turn, and hairpin before getting right back on it was brutal!  needless to say, the second time wasn't much easier!  Don't focus on this race, get your head right for the 70.3!

OK, so it's done.  You got your bad day out of the way...on to bigger and better days!
But still, even if you weren't happy with the race I appreciate the humor in the report.
Always do

In your eyes it may have been a bad day but don't for granted what you you accomplished. Could you have swam, biked and run faster? Of course you could have, but this bad day will make the good day at 70.3 all that much sweeter.

Remember the only thing that limits us is our mind..... you'll have a great race in two weeks. Can't wait to race with you.

Why are you always the guy with the funniest race report and the pictures of you and pro triathletes?????

Seriously John, shake the day off....it wasn't horrible at all, it just didn't meet your expectations of winninng the overall male title .  Time to ready yourself for Round II at Lonestar in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS!

Great effort, John, regardless of the results, especially to jump out of a boat in the middle of Galveston Bay and swim to shore.  The first race is done and behind you so you can focus on Lonestar.  Good luck in getting ready for that.

John - although no tri under my belt yet I have become the master at not reaching my expectations in races.  The great news is you have a chance to impress yourself in just a couple of weeks.  No point in dwelling on this race.  Good luck in the race you have been training for - Lonestar.

John:

You might be personally upset at your times, but they are respectable nonetheless.  Considering that they are respectable, you should take great comfort in the ability you know you have to do even better in 2 weeks.

And, as I expected, the race report did not disappoint.  Made me laugh out loud (and made my colleagues think that I am crazy).  Thanks for making my Monday morning.

Dude, for realz were you first in your AG in the swim??? REALLY??? And that wasn't the best part of your day??!! That rocks. I love that you were smart and checked the currents and confirmed it with the captain. A true mariner, you.

As for the rest, hey, you were out there!! You have a body, mind, and spirit that can do so much more than many people ever dream of. Don't sell yourself short. I'd be thrilled with your avg. bike speed in any of my races. So the run wasn't yours today, that's OK. Own it at Lonestar.

Good job, buddy. Love the pics too.

This might not make you feel any better but you will probably have a worse race someday!!  At least you got a bad one out of the way early in the season!

Congrats.  You will get it back in two weeks!

You always crack me up.  We all have bad races and then over analize them to death.  Shake it off and be ready for Lonestar.  There is not a damn thing you can do about what has already happened.

But more importantly about me...  what is up w/ this shark and wave talk?  What have I gotten myself into in 2 weeks.  I don't do waves and I don't do sharks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what they say, bad dress rehersals make for great performances. Lonestar, here you come.   And if you are kissing all the women you might want to give Roni a heads up!

nice race report, don't know which is more funny, the part about the dog farting or the part about kissing women going through the transistion. Very smart to check in with the captain concerning currents. Also you have done triathlons before, and I have not since I am not a good swimmer it all. You do more than anyone else! Keep up the amazing work. Thank you for the entertaining race report. I am looking forward to an amazing, thrilling, excited, race report for Lonestar. Keep up everything you are doing!!!!..  Stay healthy and God's Speed!

It's always an entertaining treat to read your RR's... shake it off! It was not an easy day, it was the first race of the season, this was not your 'A' race you have been logging mucho effort for, etc., etc., etc....

It'll all come together in Galveston in two weeks and all will be right in the world again! HA!

by the way... that picture with Andy is great... who was the photographer? HA!

If your dog's far smells anything like my dog's fart I can totally understand how things could have gone wrong for you really.  It's clearly all the dogs fault.  Make sure he's not near your face for your HIM.  Good job none the less.  Awesome report.

you have good days and bad, but the great thing is you still have your sense of humor about it.  Personally I think it's all karma, if your dog didn't fart on you you would have had an amazing race.  Blame the dog!
