Total Time = 3h 08m 38s
Overall Rank = 289/518
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 46/60
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 2:00am to a neighbor's yappy dog. Couldn't get back to sleep, couldn't eat anything (nerves). Spent enough time trying to prevent 'problems' (G-I kind). Finally downed a PowerADE before I got to Loveland.
Event warmup:

Set up my TA - lubed up - put on wetsuit and wandered to the lake to warmup a little (about 400 yards).
Swim
  • 37m 43s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

I *knew* that I would be slow on this swim. While I have done the distance previously, it was always in a pool. After last weekend's problems in the water, I was thinking I would be closer to 45-50 minutes. Didn't get bumped much, rolled over about 400 yards out to control my breathing, went back to freestyle after about 50 yard (tops). Got some good pulls rounding the 3rd buoy and heading back in. Had a small issue rolling to my right to breathe, and getting blinded by some sun, but overall I'm REALLY happy with how well this swim went.
What would you do differently?:

I will be doing more swim intervals, to help with my breathing and speed the rest of the summer. Over the off-season, I will be re-building my base to handle much longer swims (tops now has been 2000-2250 yards - need MUCH more here).
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Tried to take my time (in a hurry) during the T1. Forgot to grab my Clif bar and gels. Grabbed some H2O and some carb-drink. (Remember, I hadn't eaten anything this morning!)
What would you do differently?:

Practice more T1 stuff, especially running right after leaving the water.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 19s
  • 29.5 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Obviously, the bike is my strongest suit here (146 out of 518!) Missed my gatorade bottle at the aid station. FLEW down the hills! Climbing was ok, but I could use some more hill training. Lower back got kinda sore, legs and butt less sore but noticeable.
What would you do differently?:

I'm happy with this.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Here's where I started to pay for not being able to eat earlier. Got some H2O and some carb drink and took off.
What would you do differently?:

??
Run
  • 59m 24s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked the aid stations. Didn't get my legs really moving until the 3rd mile. I downed a Clif shot about the 3 mile mark, and this helped, but I really should have remembered them for on the bike segment. I fully believe that if I had remembered them, I could have beaten 3 hours.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my fueling plan!
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water, stretched and went into the lake to cool down. Wandered back in time to see COgirl and kimJ81 cross the finish!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blown nutrition plan, a little tired, bad case of nerves right before the race.

Last night, while contemplating the bad luck last weekend (swim, flat tire), I re-considered my entire plan for this race. The goal: just finish! I was so stoked at being slightly over my initial projected swim time, that I wanted to find Lynn immediately - and forgot all about what I should have been doing (fuel plan). I feel like I rocked that bike route (drove it the night before, but it really felt good while I was on it!) Beat my bike and run times by a small amount (almost 2 minutes on the bike). Overall, I don't feel like I was 'limited to perform faster', but I actually performed faster than I intended on doing. My confidence on my bike is restored, and on the swim I feel GREAT. So, while I felt like my summer race plan was thrown off last weekend, I feel like I'm within striking distance for my next two races, and on goal for my August race. Although, I may now consider Boulder Peak as a B race - Louisville Legacy is still an A race for me.

Event comments:

Last night, I seriously considered NEVER entering this race again. Now, I'm thinking I want another shot at it next year! TONS of volunteers (though I came up on that last intersection at about 30mph, and the cops were waving traffic through! I started yelling at the volunteers "STOP THEM! STOP THEM!" and pointing at the traffic. Last car through was about 2 seconds before I hit the intersection!)

Course: I still insist that there were only 3 hills on the whole course (sorry Stace!) However, two were moderately long, and one was very gentle, but climbed for like six friggin' miles! Caught up with several of the elite/pro level riders. I can hammer the downhills without too much problem, but could use a little more hill work - climbs weren't bad, but I'd like to do a little better (triple chainring maybe?)

Yes, I know that I was in a big age-group, and that 46th of 60 isn't much.  But considering last weekend, my better than expected swim, and the other issues I dealt with, I ROCKED!

Overall, this was my third (completed) tri.  I've still got a lot to learn, and a long way to go.  But with only 1 year of training, I'm friggin' ecstatic!  And now that I've done an Oly distance, I REALLY feel like a triathlete now!

Great race Joe...you really rocked the bike! Sounds like you got some good lessons from it too, like the nutrition thing. That's made a big impression on me too, trying to get a good feeding rate going, taking some carbs in every 30 minutes, especially on the bike. Doing that and staying hydrated will help a lot on the run. Find yourself a Gel that you really like and use it in training and racing on a regular schedule. Plus next time, get yourself a good breakfast, at least a couple hours before the race. Get that glycogen level topped off before you dive in the water!

Congrats on such a good event. Bet you're psyched for the next one!

Awesome race, Joe. I've forgiven you for telling me that course was "flat." 1700 feet of elevation gain is not flat, my friend! I'm glad you conquered your demons from last weekend. Congratulations!

Yeah, Baby.  That's what we're talkin about.

BTW...outstanding MENTAL approach to the race.  You didn't add the weight of last week's DNF to the stress...and it showed.  Congrats.  Olympian.

Woohoo!  Go, Joe!  Great race.

I'm glad everything went well!  I put anything I want to take with me on the bike/run into my shoes.  That way I have to remove them and put them in my pockets before I can put my shoes on
