Buffalo Springs Lake - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log

Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 354/806
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 58/123
Pre-race routine:

I ended up with a room mate - a guy from Denver who didn't have a room of his own took my hide-a-bed. We got up at 3:30 and made breakfast, loaded the bikes on my car, left the hotel at 4:45. I drank coffee the whole time. Mmmm, what a civilized way to start an early morning. :)
Event warmup:

Setting up transition seemed to take me forever! I stretched and swam a little bit.
Swim
  • 38m 17s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

This lake tasted more like boat fuel than my pond back home ;)
This was also the most polite swim race I've been in. I found clear water on the best line from bouy to bouy and held a very straight course. Only now and then would someone bump into me. Also, the sun came up AFTER we turned west - that was a blessing.
Oh, I also tried to move my legs and loosen them up over the last 200 yds. Seemed to help.
What would you do differently?:

I'll spend the rest of the summer working on endurance at a faster pace. Compared to my age group - I'm too slow.
Also have to drill on kicking to keep legs from getting too tight.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s
Comments:

After last Sunday's blisters (no socks!) I decided to take a few seconds and put socks on today. I think I also lost 30-45 sec just because I slowed down to double check that I didn't forget anything.
What would you do differently?:

Ts will get faster.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 6s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

I spose I overestimated my hill conditioning. I have to admit I overcooked the ride. By mile 25 I was getting twitches in my quads. I kept on my schedule of popping an endurolyte every half hour with my perpetuem. Nevertheless, I hit it harder than my legs were ready for - and they started to cramp. Looking back over the last few weeks - I haven't been consistent enough on the bike!!!
What would you do differently?:

Be more realistic about training and race readiness. I couldn't really get away with hammering and still run (saga below). How do I rate the bike? It has to be in the context of the impact on my race time. Good bike time, BUT it cost me on the run. That's a bad trade.
Transition 2
  • 04m 32s
Comments:

I had to run in front of the porta johns in T anyway, so I was glad to have to make a quick stop. Also good to know some fluids are getting through. I had to try to stretch out the quads before I could even start the run.
What would you do differently?:

Once I was in this predicament (cramping) - nothing to do differently!
Run
  • 2h 28m 51s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile split ~20min!!! It's pretty disheartening to see HUNDREDS of people passing!!
OK, here's the gist of how it weant. Walk, cramp, stretch by sitting on my heels, try to run again, repeat. I figured my problem was hydration, so I kept on top of the endurolytes and took my time in every aid station. By the halfway point I was very well hydrated. Then I ran from john to john on the way back in. I guess the damage was done by then, because even hydrated the legs were crampy. grrrr.
What would you do differently?:

Sufficient training !?!?!
Post race
Warm down:

eat anything they would give me. Sat down and stretched a bit. chugged a coke - mmmmm that was SO GOOOOD - but I was a disgusting burping pig at that point.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It wasn't that "my ability to perform faster" was limited - it was more of an eye-opening learning opportunity. If I don't train better for IMFL I'm gonna DNF. So today was all good ;)

Event comments:

Super phenomenal race!!! Crappy post-race feed! Super minimalist on the food! They had more IVs than power bars!

Can't wait to kick ass on this course next year!!!

Dude, nice race, but we gotta get your Ts and fuel/hydration under control here.  You did excellent (especially with a new course, and only your SECOND tri!

Once you get back, we'll go train on some hills together...

Nice race Brett!!!  Bummer about the cramping issues on the run, but your bike rocked (as usual)   And this race gave you a better idea of what issues you need to work out ahead of of IMFL.

Way to go!!

It was great to meet you and put a face with the name.  Good race even with the run problems.  Great experience for you upcoming IM.  Like they say: "Expect nothing. Prepare for everything."  You had a problem, you overcame and you didn't DNF.

Also, don't be too hard on yourself.  I know several tri athlete's in this area.  I ran up on one who was walking the run.  He was having a hard time in the heat.  And this guy is an experienced triathlete.

HIM for your 2nd race - you don't do baby steps, do you?  Very good performance even with the cramping.

I'm pretty sure I'll be spectating at FL IM - I'll get a kayak and beat the bull sharks away from ya, ok? (you know there was an incident in the panhandle this weekend, don't ya?)

Buddy, your race report sounds just like my HIM report from 3 weeks ago.  I had a good swim, decent bike, but crashed on the run due to cramping, dehydration, and the heat.  I hear ya, brother!

But, this race was for the gut.  You finished.  You endured the pain and now know you can accomplish anything.

BTW, killer bike leg, you are fast on wheels.

Congrats.

It's Super Brett! - He goes from a sprint tri to a half-IM in a SINGLE BOUND!

Great race - sorry about the cramping, but like you said, it's a good preview for IMFL. However, I doubt you'll be dealing with the hills there. Congratulations!

This was a great race for you to get a dose of reality.  You have plenty of time to work on your limiters over the next few months, and kick some ASS in Florida.  You have nothing but great things ahead for you and by gosh, you just did a Half Ironman!! Congratulations, completing a HIM is something most won't even attempt!

Awesome race, Brett!  VERY VERY good time for one of the hardest HIM's in the country!  That course is NASTY.  NO doubt about that!

If you can do BSL, you can do anything!

GREAT meeting you!  Wish you'd come out to the bar with us!

I have to say, I was happy with nutrition on this race.  I was just right.  After a couple of days to reflect - I let my training slip over the last few weeks.  My last long ride was a century ride, three weeks earlier.  I think most of my trouble started right there.  I overcooked the ride - for the training I'd really done.  That fried my legs far more than hydration was going to compensate for.  After that, I was just gimping in.

Thanks everybody for the cool notes.  Look for another HIM race report here in 6 weeks.  Should be a much better result!!!

Dude, great race.  Enjoyed meeting you and the rest of the gang.  You have the talent/ability to call your shot at IMFL, just dial in the nutrition/hydration to prevent the cramping and it is yours!

Good race and glad you had a good time...

Congrats... and, was a treat to meet you.

The weather was waaaay better than was expected... and, that was a good thing. Winds not as bad as the prior days and the morning temps were even cooler.... and, thank goodness for the overcast.

And, yet I sucked wind... at the time I couldn't figure out what the deal was... later that evening I found out... I seemed to have come down with a cold during the race. Man, that was brutal.

Ah well, time now to just get well and scope out another triathlon.

Brett,

Awesome race. I know I'm late I was at RAAM while you were racing but got to talk to Mike and Marti Greer the RD's at Bufflalo on the radio. Did you hear me? I was on the radio the day after the tri.

Anyway, I hear you on the cramping issues. My only answer is - RIDE LOTS! Hope my 1/2 IM is 1/4 as good as yours! Good job guy. You rock! O!
