I know it depends on the tire but if it says 100psi do you go over that?

Also depends on weight and weather conditions also. A rule of thumb is to stay away from the max tire pressure recomendation, your tire will roll better, grip better, ride better if you ride less than the max pressure calls for.

Always less than max, usually about 110 lbs if max is 120.

I'm 160 pounds and use tires with max pressure of 120 psi.

I inflate to 100 psi on my normal rides which include some rough patches of road.  The only time I'll go higher is if I know the road is going to be really smooth.  It's not an issue of comfort...simply that if I inflate to 110 psi on rough roads, I lose a lot of speed because my wheel is bouncing and losing contact with the road.

If it's going to be raining throughout a ride or race with some technical turns, I'll go down to as low as 90 psi so that I have more rubber contacting the road on corners.

Whatever the side of the tire says is max OR 120, whichever is lower. I weigh 210-215 and your weight needs taken into account but it's still whichever is lower.

115-ish on the rear....and 110-ish on the front.  I weigh 190#'s.

Best time I ever had, though, was my last tri..  20K bike leg, and I realized about 8K in that I forgot to pump up my tires.  Gotta be scientific, huh?

On standard width rims (19mm ish) I run just 100-105 psi, on my wider rims (23mm wide HED's or Velocity A23's) 85psi rear, 80 front.  I do love a smooth ride.

5 psi under max, except in races.

In races, at max psi.

How can I check that my pump is accurate?  It's a JoeBlow with pressure gauge, and I pump to 110, but I've come to think it's not reading right.  The only handheld gauge I have is for schrader valves.  Can I test the pump gauge on a car tire, or will that test not carry over to the much higher pressure of the bike tube?

95 - 100psi, almost always. Down to about 90 in the rain.

I typically pump to the max listing on the tire.  I find that if I go too much under that, the likelihood on pinch flats increases dramatically.  (At least the incidences of pinch flats seems to increase.  This is totally unscientific and completely anecdotal.  It could be that I notice it more then.)  The ride is a little more rough but I'll take that as opposed to stopping to change a flat.

I'm 6'5", 240 lbs.

Although the tires may feel faster when they are inflated very high, they aren't.

There are a number of threads here and on ST explaining why; the basic point is that instead of absorbing the little bumps in the road, your bike has to 'climb' them.  Check this out for a good guideline.  In addition to weight, road conditions and desired comfort play a role.

To OP:  I weigh 140 on a good day, and ride around 100psi most of the time.

Latex tubes with Vittoria Open EVO CX II tires.

Weight about 180-185lbs right now.

There is some data and charts that Shane, Bryan or Jorge (can't quite remember who) have posted in the past that would probably be worth searching for if you haven't seen it.....

Generally, 100-110 in training and 110-115 for racing.

I would generally not go over the max rating for the tire, regardless.  For many tires, I am well under the max.

The link I posted above is one.  Look in this thread for more (including the graph of pressure vs. CRR that Shane often posts).

No.

Mine are 130 PSI tires, I rise with 90-100 for training, 100-110 for racing.

Also, I use to have a link on my old PC that discussed bicycle temp rise and air pressure.  IIRC it was something like a 2% pressure rise for every 10F temp increase.  In FL the actual pavement temps after 2-3 hours are well above air temps too.  If you are one to always pump up to max tire pressures before you start when it is cool in the AM, any tire defect (e.g. tiny cut ,etc) can lead to tire blowout as the air pressure rises beyond its max recommended pressure.

Max sidewall pressure on my tires is 116

I put in 105 to 110psi.

I tip the scales at 135lbs.

I pump up to 110psi, and you lose a little when you remove the chuck.  When I put the chuck back on, (and lose a little more in the process), it comes up as 100psi.  So, I figure that if I pump to 110psi, and remove the chuck... I end up with about 105.

Thanks for the link, good info.  FWIW I'm about 187#s and on most rides over 30 miles carry a pack @ about 10#s. I don't know but when I fill them up just a tad over the 120 and take the valve off the nipple I assume some of the air that escapes come from the tire, no idea how much.

I never thought of the tire going over or climibing if it's over inflated as opposed absorbing some of the "climb" or bumps and stuff along the road.

Thanks!!
