Subject: 1/2 IM rookie question...

I am doing my first 1/2 IM this September.  My question is, do most people wear regular bike shorts on the bike leg, then change to tri or running shorts?  There is no way that I could ride 56 miles in those wafer-thin padded tri shorts, regardless of how padded my seat is.  I would appreciate any input here.

Tri-shorts all the way. Don't worry, your legs will hurt more than your arse.

I have a fairly lightly-padded seat (Sella Italia Flite Ti), and I do just fine in my tri shorts. Others do change change, or if it's a wetsuit-legal swim, it shouldn't be a problem to wear bike shorts under your wetsuit. Or...you could get one of these: http://www.all3sports.com/product_info.php?pName=quintana-roo-mr-flitie-saddle-cover&cName=bikes-saddles

I thought the same thing about my tri shorts also. I just started wearing them about 2 weeks before my half and my butt was fine during the race. Just practice. You will be fine. I wear mine for all three events. They're excellent to swim in.

And yes, you won't be worried about your butt at the end of the ride and when you're running.

Good luck.

You will learn that there are many, many approaches to the sport. What has been mentioned already is pretty spot on. Tri short will work. You will not much notice the pain from your seat, as the excitement and pain in your legs will be more prevalent. Having said that, people wear bike shorts and change. People wear speedos on the swim, change to bike shorts on the run and then change to running shorts on the run. It probably takes a bit more time, but comfort is more important than the extra 2 minutes that it will take you to change. Comfort rules in my opinion. Finally, whatever your approach, practice it in training. Do not try anything new on game day.

My first HIM is also in September, and as of now, I'm changing into bike shorts for the bike. My tri shorts only cut it on rides up to about 20 miles for me. What I've done in my Olys is wear speedos for the swim, then pull bike shorts over them for the bike and run, but in the HIM, I'll probably just do a "quick change" with a towel so I don't have to wear speedos under the shorts. For the run, I may quick change back into my tri shorts just to have less padding and a fresh pair of shorts.

I've done 2 HIM's, both in tri shorts.  My first one I was very comfortable, on my second I was getting a little sore by mile 45 but I think it's just because those tri shorts have seen better days.  So I just ordered new ones

Like everyone else has said, the excitement and focus will camoflauge any discomfort in your nether regions quite nicely.

You're going to do that in the transition area, or in the portopotties? Curious, aren't your worried about getting penalized or DQ'd (don't know what the penalty is for nudity)?  Not being a smarta$$, I'm just curious.

I will not get penalized....trust me! Just kidding, maybe.  Thanks for the input.  I guess I probably wont be focusing on my sore crotch.

Or you could pull on bike shorts over tri shorts and then take them off for the run.  I did this last year and intend to do it again this year......it only adds about 5 seconds to each transition.  good luck!

I did mine with tri shorts.  Just ride your training rides with them.  Your butt will get used to it

Zoot tri shorts have really big pads...IMHO at least.  Might be a compromise.

I have several friends who have used this technique. I plan on doing it when I do an IM for the first time.

Ok, I might be missing something, but if you were planning on putting bike shorts over tri-shorts, what is the purpose of the trishort padding? Wouldnt it be better to just ware a basic spandex short under and slap the bike shorts on top. That what there is no padding on the run.

Maybe thats what everyone is getting at and I am overthinking. Anyone?

Tri shorts usually have a very thin chamois that won't absorb a lot of water and thus feel like a diaper when swimming.

Ride more and it will not be a problem. I looked at your logs and you need to be getting in some serious miles if you are going to do a 1/2 IM.

I'm not very good at updating my training log.  I usually do 2 rides 20-25 miles, and 1 long ride 50+ per week.

Just did my first 1/2 a week ago and used tri shorts for the whole race. However I did have a misserable bike because of a pinched nerve I have, the roads were a lot bumpier than what I was use to. I don't know if regular bike shorts would have made much of a difference.

As far as changing during T1/T2, a friend of a friend volunteered in transition area for a Danskin tri where an athlete changed from swim top to jog top and the volunteer was in such shock they had no idea what the racer's number was!

In case it hasn't been said...NO BIKE SHORTS!

OMG...did that for my first HIM and ended up with chamois-shaped chafe lines...VERY painful.  All because the chamois is not designed to dry fast.  OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!

Wore tri shorts this year...no nasty chafing

I, too, have this similar dilemma. I've always raced with a wetsuits. However, my next race wetsuits aren't aloud. I usually just put tri shorts on under the wetsuit and run the whole race in those. So, if I'm not using a wetsuit do I just swim in the tri shorts?? Don't they drag quite a bit??
