Swim
Comments: gasp! lessons learned: 1. don't take kicking butt on the swim for granted (it's usually my strongest leg), 2. just because i'm passing the men, doesn't mean the rest of the women are also behind me (because they weren't!), and 3. stop thinking a wetsuit wouldn't make a big difference (i was only one of a few in my wave, or for the long course in general, without a wet suit on). again, gasp! the good news is, i had no idea how far behind i was. What would you do differently?: push harder. i wasn't pushing that hard since it was the longest swim i've done in a tri so far and i wasn't to make sure i wasn't worn out for the rest of the race. i also spent a LOT of time sighting, since i drafted at the last race and ended up off-course. Transition 1
Comments: yes, thank you very much, i actually did t1 in under 3 minutes. yippe! What would you do differently?: get to the transition area earlier so i have space to mount my bike by the saddle so that i can leave my aero bottle in. the way it was, i could squeeze in between bikes with my bike hanging by the brake levers (something i don't like to do anyway), and then i had to take my aero bottle out and put it back in during t1. Bike
Comments: well, at least i made top 10 somewhere! did really well on the bike, but again, had no idea where i was rank wise. i don't remember passing anyone from my age group. there was one gal with a '31' on her leg who finished right ahead of me, but that was the only other person i saw. i could have pushed harder on the bike too.hit 35 mph on one stretch! woo hoo! funny: this guy on nice road bike (but wearing knee socks, so there's that), passed me on the bike. i passed him and he said something about my bike being more expensive. he passed me again, then i passed him on a downhill, and he passed me on the flats saying my bike was probably heavier. whatever!? i passed him and kept my pace up in the 20+ mph range for a while and never saw him again. he might have had issues getting passed by a woman, but darnit, i was NOT getting passed up again by a smack-talking guy in knee socks! bye bye mr. knee socks! What would you do differently?: ride in aero more. still getting used to it. if i stayed in aero more, maybe i could have gotten top 5! :) Transition 2
Comments: a little longer than i wanted, but then i had to fetch one of my biking gloves from someone else's area when it went flying off my hand. hee hee. still, considering there is a run back down to the beach before you leave the transition area, this was a good t2 time. the others in my ag had t2 times around 2 mins. What would you do differently?: be more restrained getting my gloves off! Run
Comments: run felt pretty good. i was going pretty slow the first mile or so (9:40 according to my watch), but then picked up the pace after the first water stop, and again after the turn around. wish i would have checked my mile time for the last stretch, since i bet it was sub 9 to get my overall pace time to 9:08. What would you do differently?: nothing. the run is not my strength, but i did well considering the heat and being tired. Post race
Warm down: had a slice or orange and an apple, and some water, and found my family. did a little stretching, loaded up the car, then headed back to see the (somewhat disappointing) results. What limited your ability to perform faster: i'm sure the combination of stress and lack of sleep friday contributed. oh, and my period showed up this morning finally, so that may have played a roll too. Event comments: i love this race. even though i didn't kick as much butt here as i'd hoped, especially since it was my one year anniversary of being a triathlete, it was still a good time and a very pretty location. this will be on my race calendar as long as i am racing. i was really hoping to make top 10 in my age group, and i'm shocked at how much my swim time held me back. then again, it was a very strong field. the top #2 and #3 overall women came out of the 16 women in my age group. very inspiring. my times were similar to my times at heart of lakes, where i placed 10/31, so i think that speaks to the strength of this field. project for the weekend: decorate a jar with pictures of wetsuits and start saving up! friday (long): mood was up, was feeling great. bill even got to leave work early so we'd get a head start on weekend traffic up to duluth. rescued a baby robin who had been hit by a car in front of our house. bill home after picking up the car after an oil change. we loaded up the golf (kids, dog, bike, stuff, baby robin). we had a few stops to make (bank, csa, drop off baby bird at a rescue sanctuary). at the bank, the car started acting funny. and then THE CAR DIED! make a long story short, its a computer related part that isn't normally in stock. borrowed brother in law's suv (god bless him). golf was towed to the shop. loaded up (kids, dog, bike, stuff, had a friend come get the baby robin so it would make it to the sactuary before they closed). got on the road about the time we were hoping to already be in duluth (we had to get up there friday night, since we were house sitting for my parents in addition to doing the race). stressful drive up since it was prime deer hitting hour, and we were in a borrowed car. kids finally fell asleep. got to duluth around 10pm. i hardly slept since it had been such a tough afternoon.
saturday: took the dogs for a long walk. went geo-caching w/ some hiking. probably did too much on friday. legs were sore, so i didn't do a short and fast run as i had hoped.
sunday!: slept really well. up at 6am. got dressed, sunscreened, got the girls up, loaded up the car, had breakfast, tried to keep the dogs out of our hair, then headed up to the lake. not quite half way there, the gas light came on. we aren't used to driving in an suv and were shocked at how fast the car went to E. i nearly had a panic attack after all that had happened. managed to get to a gas station and fill up, but since we were getting into more rural duluth, this took a while and we didn't get to the race until late. was the last to set up in my wave rack in the transition area.
tried to calm myself down. met someone from the tri team i just joined (he finished after me, but won 2nd in his age group - me 65+ ! wow!). hardly did any stretching, but did get out for a swim warm up.
