Member 34 | Subject: RE: Rumpus in Bumpass International : Official Thread I am thinking of buying a wetsuit from xterra. The sleeveless are way cheaper ($100) than the ones with sleeves. Is it going to be too cold in mid April for a sleeveless? Anyone know if the xterra volt is worth buying or should I just rent for my first triathlon? |

The sleeveless are way cheaper ($100) than the ones with sleeves. Is it going to be too cold in mid April for a sleeveless? Anyone know if the xterra volt is worth buying or should I just rent for my first triathlon? Is it too cold? Well, last year in May for the Kinetic Half (also at Lake Anna) you would have been fine and warm and by the end of the race you would need to run through the sprinklers to keep cool. But the next day for the Sprint, you would have froze to death since the air temperature was below 40 degrees and the waves were so choppy from the wind that the fire department support boat sank. So, for April, I would recommend a full suit. My thinking is that if it is cold enough for a wetsuit, wear a full suit and take full advantage of it. If it is not cold enough, wear a speedsuit. Anyone know if the xterra volt is worth buying or should I just rent for my first triathlon? water temp last year was 66. you would have been fine with a sleeveless, but i swam with a full and was happy i did. a few thoughts on wetsuits: 1.) decided where you will be doing most of your races. if you are going to be sticking to the mid-atlantic and only want to buy 1 suit, you're best bet is a sleeveless. you might be a little chilly earlier in the season, but for the vast majority of races in our area throughout the year, you will be way too hot in a full sleeve. if you can (and want to) afford both, that is a different story. when i started, i only got a sleeveless, swam in temps as low as 62 with it, and was completely fine...and i am a world class sissy in the cold. 2.) seriously consider renting if you haven't tried one on and don't know what you want. a lot of places will give you some kind of discount if you buy from them after renting. there are plenty of people i've heard of who are just not comfortable swimming with the constriction of sleeves. better to find that out as a rental then a purchase. |

So, what should we be expecting next weekend? And how much is it going to suck in a sleeveless wetsuit? |

So, what should we be expecting next weekend? And how much is it going to suck in a sleeveless wetsuit? What's your cold tolerance? You can try wearing a long sleeve baselayer under the wetsuit. |

And how much is it going to suck in a sleeveless wetsuit? I only have a sleeveless, so I'm following the advice of others and planning on wearing a neoprene cap. The cap (along with some Mack's earplugs) can help alot. Make sure you get in the water and do a quick warmup (get your face and head wet) before the race to get over the initial cold shock. |

Member 34 | Subject: RE: Rumpus in Bumpass International : Official Thread Right now the forecast is calling for a thunder storm on Saturday. If it is lightninging I assume they will at least cancel the swim, if not the whole thing, right? I imagine being on a bike during a storm would be a bad thing. |

I've never known this to happen. Would be quite a disappointment. Usually thunderstorms don't last that long though, right? If we can't go at 10, I imagine they'll try to go later Saturday, and if Saturday is lightening all day, I'd guess they'll run it on Sunday.

Master 2725 Washington, DC Metro | Subject: RE: Rumpus in Bumpass International : Official Thread good questions... I've been watching the forecast for the weekend and am hopeful it will turn around. Sprint is on Sunday so if Saturday is T-stormed out I don't know if running it on Sunday is an option. |

In general the race organization id pretty good about communicating changes on the website. I would look there for updates. |

Veteran 217 Alexandria, VA | Subject: RE: Rumpus in Bumpass International : Official Thread A couple of years ago, I did the Kinetic Sprint when it was in mid-April and it was raining the whole time. No t-storms though. Made for a mess in transition, slow biking and sloshy running, but I had a blast. I made the mistake of worrying about wet gear (I kept my helmet and shoes in bags and changed socks in transition) when everything was soaked in a minute anyway. In the future, I'll just suck up the chill and wetness and have dry clothes in the car for afterwards. |

I remember how good it felt to have on dry socks, and then immediately stepped in a mud puddle before I'd even gotten out of transition. I found it pretty amusing on the run to see a woman avoid running through a puddle, as if that mattered by then. |
