FS Series
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 40m 28s
Overall Rank = 46/101
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/5
Pre-race routine:

Got up a 5AM ate ceral and drove to race. Drank a diet Pepsi on the way and ate a cliff bar there
Event warmup:

Biked about three miles to adjust the bike and swam about 300 yds.
Swim
  • 14m 37s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

All the men started as one. We were treading water. The route to the first bouy was a melee! Punching, kick, karate, kung fu, jujitsu, etc. Lost my RoadID here (gotta order a new one). Some guy kept weaving across me. At the first bouy I extended my strokes and pulled away from him into clear water. I had a weird cramp in the top of my left foot, but it did not slow me down. I switched to tinted goggles before the race when I realized we would be swimming into the sun on the return. It was a good choice.
What would you do differently?:

Start more towards the fron and start being smooth sooner.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Only so so, feet were a lttile cramped and could be a little more organized.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions more
Bike
  • 52m 31s
  • 17 miles
  • 19.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Took about 3 miles to get a rhythm. For some reason I was not breathing great at the beginning. After 10 miles I knew this was only going to be a so-so ride. Did not seem to have much jump in my quads. Passed and was passed by about the same # of people. Drank about 1/2 a bottle of water and ate a GU. Hill at mile 13 seemed to beat a lot of people up me included.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Feet cramped a little getting my running shoes on. It was my first time running with xtenex laces. Forgot my garmin on the bike and went back for it. D'oh!
What would you do differently?:

Practice using new lace system more to get used to them. Not forget Garmin
Run
  • 30m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Knew I was not going to have a stellar run, but knowing how far I have come with my Bursitis I am not upset. Knew this was going to be my achillies heel here. Drank a little water a the aid statins and poured the rest on my head.
What would you do differently?:

Build a bigger running base and that is what I am doing now. Oh and shed more weight, which I am also doing.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate and drank and congratulated my coach for winning for the 3rd straight year. Sub 10 minute swim is unreal!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough running and being behind with my run training due to injury.

Event comments:

Had fun. It was good to be racing again. Would have the clydesdale division by a minute, but even though I qualify I have never raced that. It would be too much like giving in!

You rocked that swim!  I know the run was hard with getting that base back up after the injury, so good job staying tough!

Wow - super speedy swim especially with all of the contact.  Solid bike and run even on an off day.  Looks like you've got lots else on the calendar to keep you busy!  Stick with the hard work - it's definitely paying off.
