Pre-race routine:

Some yogurt in the morning and downed a gatorade on the way there. Nothing too much since its a 5k. Nick, my oldest boy, joined me as a spectator. We enjoyed the 1.5 mile dog jog that took place right before the 5k. Went over to see Fred at packet pickup and chatted for a bit. He clued me into the finer points of the course since he runs this quite a bit in training.
Event warmup:

Walked a couple of the hills with Nick, then left Nick near the start and ran about a 1/2 mile of the course backwards.

Comments:

It was a good race. A personal best for me. I kept the legs turning over fast especially up the hills.

The first two hills were in the first mile. That 6:25 that I ran for the first mile would have probably been low 6's if it was flat. I was hurting by the end of the 1st loop of the course. Tried to keep cadence around 90 and shorten the stride when I got tired.

The strangest thing that happened to me was that I got extremely winded and couldn't get breath back throughout the whole race. At the end of the race, I just couldn't breathe.
What would you do differently?:

Must go slow on that first mile. I don't have the capability to maintain that fast a pace for 3 miles.

I could feel my form abandoning me as I grew more and more tired. Need to keep focus

Post race
Warm down:

Sat down and got breath back with Nick. Found some hot chocolate and some bread/bagels. Ran into Sue and her husband post race. Talked Myrtle Beach Half for a bit before heading on to see Fred one last time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pacing. Need to do a better job at pacing myself.

Event comments:

Good race. Had a good time. Learned a lesson about pacing myself correctly.

Great PR!! Looks like it was a good day for all of us at the races. Felt kind of weird going to an event and just running. Nothing to worry about except your running stuff and finding the porta potty.

Have a great holiday. You worked hard and earned the right to have some food and drink.

You can't complain about a PR! Especially if it's on a hilly course! Congratulations Jeff.

Holy cow, 7:02 per mile!? You rock! Hope you guys had a good turkey day. Our internet has been acting up and the fact that I'm still battling the flu, I feel so disconnected from BT lately! Sorry this is a few days late. Again, congrats on a new PB, speedy gonzalez!

Congrats, that's awesome!

The fact that you ran 6:25 on what you said is a hilly first mile speaks volumes to what you CAN do on a flat course.

The first mile is always fast, it is just a matter of making sure you do not go out TOO hard. Keeping it in check makes all the difference in the last mile of the race. On a flat course if you just use a little mental check in that first mile I am sure that you could maintain a pace in the 6 minute range and get down below 21 for the 5k.

Great job, keep it up!!
