And on a side note, I'll rant on what would have made interisland travel so much better...

We had a ferry (called the super ferry) that would travel between islands.  3 hour ride, $60 per person one way, but for an additional fee (I think $50), you could also bring your car on.  3 hours from Oahu to Kauai, or Oahu to Maui.  And would have been 6 hours from Oahu to Big Island.  The great thing was that you don't need a rental car, and you can also load your car up with whatever you want.  Bikes, coolers, fishing gear, tents, scuba gear, etc.  It would have made interisland travel so much more feasible for locals.

But, for political reasons, long story short, it got shut down after less than a year.  Now imagine trying to go on a camping or fishing trip to another island.  With all the excess baggage fees, it's simply not worth it.

Had a sprint pace swim workout this morning. Held faster than 1:25/100m pace throughout the set of 4x100, 8x50 and 8x25. One more swim on Friday morning. Bike early tomorrow before work and a 9 miler in the afternoon because I am travelling on Sat.

2 more days of third year left. Counting down the hours................

I always wondered why every time we'd go there would be a ton of folks coming home from Vegas. I thought the super ferry died due to environmental issues, ie whales

Hey everyone, Fred invited me to join the group.  130 pages, looks like an active group!

Name: Arend teRaa (just pronounced like Aaron with a hint of a D at the end)

Story: I was a swimmer as a kid, up to my first two years of University.  Didn't do anything else from a sports point of view, no biking, no running.  After I stopped swimming I pretty much went cold turkey on activity and didn't get back in a pool for about 12 years.  Then one day I saw that two of my old swimming buddies had done a local triathlon and my first thought was "I could do that!".  I bought a bike (hybrid), tried to run and then found BT.  It took me almost two years before I did a race, I fought my knees running for most of it until my physio straightened me out.  Been hooked ever since!

2011 Races: 3 Duathlons, 3 sprints, 1 Oly and 1 with odd distances but along the lines of an Olympic or a bit longer.  I was supposed to do a HIM as well but it was cancelled 2 weeks before it.

2012 Races: I've done one sprint, one double duathlon and my main focus is IM Mont Tremblant which will be my first IM.  I also entered a race on July 1st that was going to be a long training day to test nutrition etc.  It was an IM distance swim, IM distance bike and then a 21.1k run.  Unfortunately I picked up a gastro bug and woke up that morning with some nasty cramps.  I started the race, swam 56:26 but as soon as I started the bike I couldn't take on any water or food without the cramps.  I gutted it out for 40k on the bike hoping it would improve before I bailed and turned around.

Family: It's my wife and I and our 3 dogs.  My wife is super supportive, she comes to all of my races and completely supports me in the long training hours.  She also trains a lot for duathlons, at least up until she crashed on her bike in early May.  That has put her out of commission with a separated shoulder and subsequent surgery.  She was training for the bike leg of an IM relay but that has been deferred to next year.

IM training has been very interesting for me.  I've really enjoyed it for the most part but I'm not sure it is going to be a distance I race often.  The run is going to be a huge question mark for me.  My left knee is constantly on the edge of flaring up on me and that has limited me somewhat in training.  My longest run has only been 26 kms (Gulp!).

My plan for next year is to do some HIMs to see how I like that (I know, backwards....).

Happy to join the group!

Training for me today was a 40 min swim in the pool and then a 2:05 run after work.  It's going to be warm here today too - at least by Canadian standards.  Tongue out

Welcome Arend.

Us Canucks are getting close to a majority here :-) We needed Maritime representation. I split my time between Montreal and Ottawa

I registered to volunteer at IMMT, so hopefully we will cross paths.

I am from the maritimes actually. NB.  Even though I live in the states I'm still Canadian.

Arend, bummer about the race in Darthmouth but how did you like the part of the course you did do as well as the race organization?  I was so darn close to going to that race this year.  I actually lived right there and I still have family there that I could have stayed at.

Up at 430 to do a ride this morning and decided to go to the gym and do it on the spin bike because it was too foggy out. 9 miler this afternoon whenever I get out of the hospital. Here's to hoping my senior takes mercy on us and let's us out early? Haha

I liked everything I saw about the race!  They were very well organized, everything was right on time.

The swim was perfect - around the rowing clubs buoys made sighting easy and great for spectators too.  They could literally walk along the path beside the water and follow  you if they wanted to.

The first 35k on the bike were beautiful!  Some gentle rollers along the lakes, very little traffic and great pavement.  Once we crossed the highway behind the airport there was a 2-3 km stretch of some roads that were rough but not terrible.  Certainly not unsafe in the least.  There were lots of volunteers and police at all the intersections.

Talking to some people who finished, they said the rest of the bike course was good after the rough section.  It got really windy on the way back for them.  It was really hot for the run and it showed in the times.  Only one runner under 2 hours for the 21.1 and lots of people dropping down to just the aqua distance.

I'm definitely thinking about doing it again next year.

Welcome Arend!!!

i was up at 530am and got about 28 miles in, it was a nice easy coffee ride as my buddy raced last night so was not into a hammerfest.

this weekend i have a charity bike ride, it is the ride that got me going on all this stuff. I was 250lbs and signed up for the 11 mile ride, i trained and felt like i could complete the 25 miler so i upgraded. 2 hours and change later i was totally spent but finished and that started me on the biking which turned into Triathlon.  I missed it in 2009 due to a schedule conflict, but have done the century the last two years and i will be doing it again this year.  in 2010 i rode 103 miles, in 2011 i rode 115, this year i plan on 125, which will be a short 10-15 miler before the ride, the ride and then bike home from the site.

i think a new thread with a reintroduction of everyone would be awesome.

TSimone - 2012-07-25 6:44 PMFor those of you with Wheelbuilder covers, do you use the plastic screws that come with it or tape, or both?  Fedex was good to me today.
. I use both, actually it's reasonably complicated. You need to tape the inside of the cover that is on the cassette side to the spokes to avoid any rubbing when from the chain or cassette. Tape the spokes to the inside of the cover on the drive side. Then use the screws, then I add some tape to the rim areas as well.

Keep in mind that you can only do this on a deep wheel - on a box rim there is nowhere to tape, so I just use the screws.  Zero issues to date for me.  X2 on taping the drive side from the inside.

I guess it depends on how the cover is cut and what type of rim you have.  Most covers I have seen still have a 5 mm gap between the edge of the cover and the brake track...even on standard training rims.

Really?  I'll take your word for it, but just assumed there wasn't enough room between the brake track and actual rim - there certainly isn't on my DT Swiss.

I can tape my cover to the Mavic Open Pro wheel I use.  I also use the screws just to make sure it will stay but the tape is definitely an option.

Welcome Arend - this group is going to be discussing everything in metric within the next couple of weeks!!

Had the day off work yesterday and got in (for me) a monster brick workout.  Rode 120km, followed by an 8km run in about 30C weather.  All in all I felt pretty good, and followed the plan for nutrition and hydration well, although I found I drank almost a full bottle in less than 45min on the run, which is rare for me.  Also managed an NP of 207 watts over the almost 4 hours which is only 3 watts less than what I was considering targeting for the HIM.  I did get some discomfort in my right hip/glute area around 2 hrs into the ride, and it lingered for a while, but eventually died down.  I've had this before but I'm not sure if it's from my position, exterion level, etc.

One thing I am considering is dropping my front end just a bit.  I've got some spacers to play with, and wondering if I can improve my aerodynamics while not messing with my power.  If I take out a spacer do I need to really make any other adjustments - ie. move the saddle forward a bit?

James - Threw my tires in the dryer for a couple of minutes and then stretched them a bit.  Made a big difference.  Not easy but I sure wasn't fighting with them, either.  Appreciate the tip.

Now you got to explain the rubber smell and skid marks to your wife.

It cannot be as bad as the time when my wife asked me why I had my cycling shoes in the dishwasher and I told her it was to clean the pee out of them....

Hi Arend - welcome to the group - I am a long-time fan of your contributions. Just read your thread in TT about derailuer adjustment - glad you got it worked out. It is funny, but there is nothing more empowering on the bike than knowing exactly how your drivetrain works.
