Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership That sounds like what people are paying for Lifetime memberships around here. I once paid that much for a single membership for a Lifetime in downtown Minneapolis that happened to be in the building connected to where I work. That's super convenient and I loved it. Now that I am living and working more suburban, I gave up that hassle and now pay $25/month at LA Fitness. It's more "basic", but still has what I need: classes, weights, cardio equipment, really nice pool (better than any Lifetime I went to). It doesn't have a nice locker room or towel service. The cleanliness of the locker room and operational machines depends on the gym. I really like it, it has everything I need in a gym. I am not surprised you have to pay that, you're a captive audience. I suspect in a smaller town there are less people to share the cost of running a facility. It reminds me that a lot of the cost of our gym memberships is paid by people who sign up and then don't go. I used to be that person. Now, I thank them. |

Regular 163 Kansas | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership WOW! Such a variety of facilities to prices ratio. At times I felt good about my price, others not so good. I wish I was as lucky as some of you about the price you pay for your membership. I guess living a healthy lifestyle comes with a price. I think my brother-in-law pays $30 a month for a membership to The Y - and that includes access to other Y's and local centers. I actually live in Victoria, KS - in a town of about 1200 people, my gym is roughly 15 minutes away from the house and work. I kind of wish a YMCA would move into town to give some competition with the prices. But, I guess it is what it is - and I have to pay it. It is a nice facility, and when I can start doing more in my rehab I'll probably be there more. |

Veteran 437 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership I believe I paid about $230 for the year at LA Fitness. It also gets cheaper every year I renew. I think my next year will be like $180 or so. I only use it for the 25yard pool. Edited by wolfador 2012-12-07 8:52 AM |

Pro 5755 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership $95 a month, but I live in a big city and it's an absurdly swanky gym. A lot of ex-pro athletes belong. They have masters swim, a great pool, and a lot of triathletes train there. I use to belong to a gym, another pool for swim training, and swim coaching once a month. When I added it all up it was pretty close to the cost of this gym. Plus there's a lot of hot wealthy single women there. |

I live in a pretty small town, a lot of folks here only stay on the weekends (lots of second homes for the folks from Phoenix to get out of the heat) and the prices of the gyms are way high, and very little in return for that. And no pools. If they cannot get volume of clients they need to get the money somehow... |

Veteran 217 Redondo Beach, CA | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership My gym has changed hands 3 times since I joined in 1982. It's now an LA Fitness. I've been paying an annual fee that, if I recall correctly, started out at about $32. Next March it renews again and will be up to $76. Yes. For the year. Full gym and 25yd lap pool. Racketball courts too, but I don't use those. |

400 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership I used to have a family YMCA membership that ran $95/month. Last year, I found out our company health insurance provider offers a fitness program where I pay $25/month and have access to all kinds of facilities - basically I go to their website, type in a zip code and it shows me nearby facilities I can use for free. This is a great benefit as I travel 25-30% of the time for work. I do end up in smaller cities that don't have participating gyms from time to time. The best part is I can use the local YMCAs that I used to pay the $95/month to use. I mostly use it for the pools and occasional weight training. I prefer to run outside and if relegated to the treadmill, I use the one in my basement. |

70 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership I belong to 2 gyms. The first I joined 4 years ago or so and is about $140/yr. It is a local community rec center subsidized by the city in which I work and you must either work, live, or own a business in the city to get access. Resident memberships are even cheaper. It's only a block from my work which makes it very convenient for lunch time work outs etc. They were going through a large expansion and have a couple studios, medium size cardio / weight area with good selection of free weights. There are two gyms racquet ball etc and an outdoor pool. The pool is only open from Memorial Day to labor day. During my lunch time workouts they have like 3 sometimes 4 lanes set up in the 25yd configuration for lap swimming. They do have an early morning lap swim with 8 50m lanes set up that I will attend sometimes. Since I signed up for a HIM in early June and I needed to swim well before Memorial day I had to find a second gym and just recently signed up at the Y. This membership starts out at $30/mth for 3 months then goes up to around $60/mth. It is about a mile from my work and they have 3 pools, 2 indoor 25m and one outdoor 50m. They also have a free masters program, no coach on deck, but there are posted workouts and I have been getting tips and feedback on my technique from other swimmers. Plus there are many other Tri-Athletes swimming as well. For the Y though I also have access to all the other y facilities in the metro area that I live in. So I probably have access to like 13 different facilities through the region which I have yet to take advantage of but I'm sure I will in the future. Edit to add: The y is a month to month membership and the first gym I pay in full for an entire year. Edited by lagdawg 2012-12-07 10:21 AM |

Seems purty dang high to me too. I pay $59 a month for my wife and I but that is a family rate so even if we had kids it would not go up. She works pretty far away from our house and likes to go stair climb over her lunch hour so she found a small gym with a climber for $10 a month that she goes to as well. We were paying $75 per month for a family membership at the Y so we are still money ahead and I don't have to deal with the ridiculous pool schedule at the Y. |

Extreme Veteran 3020 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership $35 a month at LA Fitness Moved to other side of city this past summer and used to pay around $80 for Lifetime Fitness. Much, much better facility with 2 SCM pools (total of 16 lanes....glorious) that were pristine. My pool right now is SCY and not the nicest, but it's my only option. |

Elite 3498 Laguna Beach | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership LA Fitness sells a 2 year membership at Costco for about $240 or about $10 a month. It includes access to pools, all their facilities (which are nice) and they have OK hours (not 24 hours unfortunately) and tons of locations. Mine is 1 mile from my house so I run there and run back. |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership My gym has two locations, each about 15-20 minutes from home. Both have 25 yard indoor and outdoor pools, 6 lanes on the indoor pools, 4 lanes on the outdoor. Lots of machines/weights inside, treadmills, stationary bikes, elyticals, stairclimbers, rowing machines etc. Bot have spin rooms. Gym has sauna, jacuzzi etc. towel service which is nice. I pay $65 a month but that includes masters swim programs. Both locations have multiple masters swims, mornings and evenings and both have masters swim on Saturday morning. I think membership for new members is now $50. Guess I gotta go talk to membership! |

Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership $45 a month for the YMCA. Full weight and cardio gym. Raquetball courts, full court basketball, pool with masters class (included in membership). I mainly use it for masters class. $30 per year to use my community pool which is open 365 days a year, 21 hours per day (closed 6-9am for cleaning). Usually only 1-2 lap lanes, which the kids rarely respect, so I only go there on off hours like after 7 pm. I also have a fitness center at work with free weights (dumbells 5-100, and a power rack up to 450 pounds, machines, 6 treadmills, 3 elipticals, and 3 bikes. Also an area for small aerobic/zumba classes. Locker rooms and showers. That's free. |
