Pre-race routine:

Race started at 10:45, so I was able to sleep in until 8. Pretty awesome! Got up, showered, ate breakfast and coffee, hung out with E for awhile before driving down to the race site. Parked near Capital Ale House since that's where I'd be last. Probably the best decision I made all day.
Event warmup:

Walked from Cap Ale to the race site. Was able to watch the 1/2 Marathon start. Chatted with Judi's husband for a few minutes before heading into the tent. I got stretched by the massage therapist (who is AMAZING! Seriously going to try to go to him) and checked out the other booths. Headed out to porta potty and then lined up in the field (that's right, FIELD!) where we started.

Comments:

Let me start off by saying that this course is MISERABLE! I know the race director has no control over the weather, which really made it worse, but even in the best of conditions it would not have been fun. The canal area is pretty narrow and there were way too many people coming through. Some bottle necks around the stairs.

I did pretty well for the first two miles. It started raining as I was heading back in and out to the Mayo Bridge. I kind of lost motivation there. My stomach started cramping, I was getting cold, and it's just not a nice place to run. Really struggled through the whole Manchester area. The porta potty at mile 4 was such a HUGE relief!! Of course, after that, I went up the hill to the Lee Bridge. Turned on to that bridge and got a face full of wind and icy snow. Absolutely miserable. My muscles felt like they were seizing and it was so hard to run. But, running was better than walking because of how cold I got while running. There was a little over a mile left after the bridge, but my hips and legs were so sore that it was tough to keep going. Walked up the hill on Byrd and tried to run down. Running down was tough because of how slippery the bricks were. Was so glad to get to the end!

Warm down:

Walked around, hung out with Judi's husband while waiting for her to finish. Once she did, we headed into the tent. Got Irish Coffee and stew to try to stay warm. Stood in front of the one heater to warm up. Once Kristen finished, we walked to Cap Ale.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Everything about today was the perfect storm of suck.

Performance: Bad
Course: 1 loop (1/2 mary did 2) starting in a grassy field on Brown's Island. Ran along the canal walk, which is really twisty and has a lot of stairs, until an arbitrary point to turn around. Lots of two-way traffic from both the 10k and 1/2 marathon in parts that can be narrow. Up to the streets to go over the Mayo Bridge at 14th. Down into Manchester, which has lots of warehouses and is not such a great area. Through the industrial area over to the Lee Bridge. Lee Bridge to Byrd Street. A fairly steep slippery hill on Byrd back down to Tredagar.

"Perfect storm of suck".  That made me laugh out loud.  It may have sucked, but YOU didn't.  Way to face all that adversity and keep on going!  You said it was tough to keep going, but you did.  I bet there were lots of people who signed up, saw the weather, and jammed.  You did it!!

I'm sorry to see that it was such a disheartening race--those are the worst kinds! Still, even with the issues, you finished--congrats on that!

Never is the word.  NEVER again.  Not this race and not another RMS race.

Good job toughing it out in the craptastic weather.

Jen, you rocked it. You had every reason to turn around and take a trip back home and into the warm bed, but you toughed it out. Great job!

Wasn't it awful!?!? That hill with the wet bricks was terrible!! Way to tough it out! Hope the knees and hips are feeling better by now. Sorry I missed you guys. We had to get back to the kiddos. I don't know that I could have walked to the restaurant, really. Barely made it to the car!

Awww, so sorry to hear much of the race was crappy, both weather-wise and course-wise.   Way to hang in there and finish, though.  Tough day!  But hey, you got your Irish Coffee at the end and a great massage to start, so it wasn't a total wasted day!

I think you are awesome for finishing! Glad you got to enjoy a massage, and an IRISH COFFEE, and, hopefully, good food and drinks at Cap Ale.
