Sensei Sin City | Subject: How Many Job Changes... ... have you had? I have been looking back at how long I have been in Las Vegas and my career history (maybe a symptom of getting old?) It started off realizing my 10 yr anniversary of moving here came up. Which sucks how time flies because I really don't like it here. I have officially lived here longer than Colorado, which I LOVED. Life is too short to be somewhere you don't like. ANYWAY. I realized I am also on my 6th job (considering ONLY the jobs in my career). 1 in Illinois, 2 in Denver, and my 3rd in Vegas. How many different companies have you worked for? I'm also curious how many years you have been in the workplace. (again, not including that fast food gig you had in highschool). I have been doing this engineering thing for 21 years (including that year I had "off" due to the economy). So 3.5 year average between jobs? |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: How Many Job Changes... I'm only 31 and I've had two "real" jobs that I used my college degree (mech eng) towards. One during college that I left after graduating when I ran away to Colorado to play in the mountains for a year, then the one I'm at now that I've been at for almost 7 years. I know a lot of people that work on the 5 year plan and switch every 5 years because they never want to get too comfortable and believe that after 5 years you gain enough experience to warrant a much larger raise by switching companies than you can get if you get the traditional 2-5% annual raise. I'm not against that, I just really like the company I work at. I would think the 10 year itch is probably a pretty typical one to scratch though. |

Prior to this, longest stint was probably around 4yrs. I had one company go belly-up and another eliminated my division, so it hasn't all been wanderlust. |

I think 3 changes for me were my choice. The other three were economic choices. Downsizing and closings... Fortunately, got into something new right away except one time... |

Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: RE: How Many Job Changes... I'm with the same company (at least four different positions) since I finished my MBA in June 1990. Is that one job per company, or for each position? Prior to that, drove a school bus while attending college and grad school. Prior to that three years in electrical supplies. I've worked since i was 14, so numerous part-time jobs while I was in school. |

I have been doing some type of research at the same university for 13 years, but at different levels over that time period. I think the oddest thing about it is that I've always had at least one other job, though not always another full time job. The "side" jobs have been: bartender, personal trainer, pilates instructor, english teacher (community college), yoga teacher, natural childbirth teacher and doula--pretty much in that order. My current second job is as a grant and paper writer for a surgeon at a different university. At least it has some overlap with my "main" job. |

Master 2380 Beijing | Subject: RE: How Many Job Changes... Hmmm... I guess it depends on your definition of "job" For my "jobs" since finishing college: 2.5 years as an Engineer then 5 years as a Catholic Youth Minister (at the same time I owned a network/computer support business and a Paint-your-own Pottery studio with my wife) And since then, 10 years as an Engineer again. So, 5 I guess. |

32 | Subject: RE: How Many Job Changes... I've been working since 13/14ish and at that time I pushed a mower around town cutting grass for people. Then from 14/15-through college I had quite a few jobs of various things but 99% of the jobs I left on good terms and they all wanted me to stay. Then I had jobs in college and after realizing what I got my college degree in was not what I wanted to do I quit that job and been doing my current job since (I am in my late 20s). I already see that I will not be in my current role forever but for now it is money. I am not sure what the future holds but I know I don't like the idea of working to make others rich.

About to hits 15 yrs. Been kicking around the idea of leaving to get market value for my services. Work/life balance is great, started when we had a DB plan, and have a 401K. A b*tt load of vacation...so very comfortable. Probably too comfortable. |

Since being in Australia (10 years) I've had 6 jobs and one year maternity leave! This job is almost record breaking at 2 and a half years! I'm not loyal unless it's rewarded. Here it is. So probably stick around a bit. Problem is I get bored. I'm lucky to be in a job that is constantly in demand especially if UK trained and experienced. Mine is a job though not a career. |

Similar sort of story, think that is the way the job market is going here though with such low unemployment levels. Since leaving uni in 3rd year of 4 year degree, have had 9 employers across 2 different careers. Similar thing in that none of the jobs have been able to challenge me, or been unable to meet fair reward for what was expected. Just under 5 years was my longest time over the 18 years. Current job I would walk out on now, however at the 16 month mark and my resume is showing the last 5 jobs with 2 or less years in each, so sticking around until the 3 year mark or a package comes my way which is a real possibility in the next 12 months. |

I count a move to a new city as a new job even though a couple of them have been with the same company. I'm 54 and have moved around a bit. Company 1- 1 Job, 1 year, 1 city. Company 2- 3 Jobs, 6 years, 3 cities. Company 3- 1 Job, 2 years, 1 city. Company 4- 1 Job, 4 years, 1 city. Company 5- 2 Jobs, 17 years, 2 cities. |

Extreme Veteran 799 | Subject: RE: How Many Job Changes... Been working at the same company since I was 17. Worked part time through high school and college, then went full time and ended up getting my MBA. So it's been 16 years. The company has been bought a couple of times, but I've obviously stayed around. I plan on continuing to work here as long as I have interesting opportunities and they pay me well enough. Went on an interview several years ago just to give it a shot. I was surprisingly bad at it. If I was smarter I'd look for other jobs and put my resume just to get a feel for the market, but that seems like alot of work. |
