Pre-race routine:

MY FIRST RUNNING EVENT TODAY!!

Between the 4 and 12km events there were 29,500 people entered.

Got up at 5:30 got dressed and had a banana. Nice morning not real cold and not raining! I left home at 5:50am, drove to my friends place and left my car there. She drove me and her brother into the city (he was doing the 12k) and dropped us off.
Event warmup:

Walked the 750m from where my friend dropped us off up the hill to the bag drop. Met 2 friends of my friends brother. We sat around for ages and chatted. They headed off to their start about an hour before my race started so I wandered around for ages trying to stay warm.

Comments:

I wasn't sure that I was able to run the full distance and how fast I would be able to do it so I started in the second last start group. Starting in this group meant that there was a lot of people walking, heaps of little kids and parents with prams. It was really hard to actually run as there was so many people packed into such a small area.

I walked the first 200-300m until people spread out a bit and then just started at a slow jog while I dodged around people. It started to thin out by the 1km mark. There was a water station at the 2km mark but it was 5 people deep to get to it and i decided I was right and didn't need it. After the aid station it thined out a lot more and I was able to hold a relatively straight line and run at a fairly steady pace while dodging the odd few people.

I was just starting to tire and thinking about walking a bit when I saw the 3km sign and decided there was no way that I was stopping to walk and so just sucked it up and ran all the way to the finish line. WOO HOO.
What would you do differently?:

Start in a faster wave so that I don't have to deal with all of the walkers and children.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandered around the event for a while waiting for my friends brother.

We then walked the 3km back into the city to pick up our bags. We stopped in the city for "breakfast". I was about to order a strawberry and chocolate muffin when I remembered that it was day one of thirty days of no chocolate so had orange and poppy seed instead.

Caught the train back to my friends place and walked the 1km from the station to her place, picked up my car and drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Course: Course started in Hay St and went down the hill and Riverside Drive up past the WACA and into Gloster Park. It was a beautiful day and it was great to run by the river. It was as flat as glass and there was no breeze, it wasn't really warm it was just a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning. There was a little hill about 500m before the finish line.

Excellent job. I have learned that lesson about walkers and strollers too. Your second choice muffin sounds yummy.
