Flying with bike helmet...

Expert  1053   Culpeper, VA |  Subject: Flying with bike helmet...I'm flying with my bike helmet... will not fit in bike case and don't want to pack it... would rather just carry it since it is safety device that I don't want crushed/damaged, etc. Anyone know of any issues with carrying one on the plane? Pretty sure no problem here but don't want any surprises. TIA |

I've done bike tours all over the place for years, as well as tris, and nearly always carried on my helmet on a large number of airlines, both to/from the US and within Asia. No one's ever said anything to indicate it's a problem, as recently as three weeks ago (US domestic and then onward to Vietnam via Japan). Not many people outside of tri/cycling have seen an aero helmet, so it's possible that could raise a few eyebrows, but I can't imagine not being able to take it on. The only bike-related issue I've ever had with TSA was getting a fluid trainer in its original box into checked luggage--they did let it on but I had to do a little explaining about what it was and they manually inspected it. |

I usually have my transition bag as my carry on with pedals, helmet, all my race clothes, running and bike shoes - so if my checked bag does not make it at least I have everything I need and if bike does not make it at least have pedals if I want to try to rent or borrow. |

Extreme Veteran 1986 Cypress, TX | Subject: RE: Flying with bike helmet... I use the Zoot Ultra Tri Bag. They have two versions: backpack (what I use) and the carry-on roller bag. They're pretty much identical with the exception of the rollers and handle of the carry-on version. | Subject: RE: Flying with bike helmet... Never had a problem with a helmet. The last time I flew for a race though, I did get stopped to have them check my bag because of my tools. Normally I keep my tools in my bike box, but I unloaded some to keep it under 50 pounds. I knew there was a rule that you couldn't have any wrenches over 6 inches, and they measured my pliers. It was just under so they let me go. A pedal wrench is one of the most common bike tools that can't be taken on the plane (carry on) due to its length. |

If you look around you're bound to see climbers, skaters, cyclists, snowboarders with their helmets dangling from a back pack. Not as likely, but you might even see a runner or two with their race shoes hanging from their bag. |
