I'm not very religious, but think I might have an issue with that on a school field trip as well. I guess maybe okay if it is approached more as urban legend/history/regional culture for older kids....maybe. For adults, sure. But it seems like kids that age (and their parents) might assume that if a ghost tour is included on a school trip, it means the school is tacitly acknowledging that these things are real. Definitely it would have been problematic with some of the more religious families at most of the schools I've worked at.

I've always had an issue with the ghost and paranormal-oriented shows that (at least used to--I don't get cable anymore) air on the Discovery Channel. It's supposed to be (or was originally) a science and learning-oriented channel. I often recommended it to parents and kids as a good way for kids to build their English listening vocabulary for science and social studies topics, as it had lots of high-interest, kid-friendly content. But I stopped doing that after all the ghost/paranormal shows started. There's a strong undercurrent of belief in that stuff in Vietnamese and several other Asian cultures anyway, and I felt the fact that it was appearing on a learning channel along with science shows was, really, sending a perhaps unintended message that ghosts were a real, scientifically proven phenomenon--not a message I wanted to support, as the children's science teacher!

Hmm, I have a different opinion. I actually think that ghost tours should have a positive impact, especially at that age. This activity gives the kids an exposure to the sites, that have bees associated with paranormal activities. Well, are those true? Most of them, if not all of them, have scientific explanations, thus, it could actually be an educational trip (In additional to an exploration of historical and cultural matters of the specific region).

I think that exposing children earlier to such things is better for them. Just like exposing them to and teaching about death: for example, taking them to funerals. If they haven't had to deal with death, nor attend a funeral early (with proper preparation, if necessary), then it will be much harder for them to cope with it later in adulthood.

Same with ghosts and those tours. I am an adult and never been to those sites - and due to the stories and the amount of horror movies I have seen, I will have a hard time rationalizing whatever is happening at those sites. Now, if the kids visit them early and see that nothing scare is actually happening (I mean, what can happen...? Weird sounds...?), those sites are not that bad, most of them are just based on the legends, they get all that early exposure, and won't bee scared later in their lives. Also, I can imagine that whoever designed those tours made sure they are safe. I don't think they would do a strenuous cemetery tour at midnight.

Of the 'Ghost Tours' or 'Haunted Tours' I've taken at sites such as Gettysburg, Williamsburg, Fells Point in Baltimore to name a few, plus some local tours, I've found them to be mainly a walking history lesson.  "Sally So-and--so lived here with her husband and family during the war.  Soldiers died in the barn, a makeshift hospital. Sometimes late at night a mysterious blue light is seen in the window" or the more common, "There have been reports of a lady in white  walking the grounds some evenings".

I feel an eighth-grader would surely have had some exposure to ghosts via books, TV, movies, or tales told at sleepovers and would be old enough to handle such information.  Besides, I don't think the tours are there to convince people ghosts are real, they are mainly for entertainment, to make history a little more real.  Are some tales based in fact? Hmm, maybe.  Maybe not.  There will always be devout believers and staunch skeptics.

I agree. I mean what about campfire ghost stories that kids go to? The goosebumps books? I think it is a gun way to get.kids involved in history. People take these things way too seriously.

Sounds like a fun trip- without the kids!

Yep. I will send you thoughts and prayers.

LMAO! I thought the same thing when Ann-Marie said it then I almost spit out my water when Robin repeated it.

Enjoy Chatt and the meet ups! I hope the normal course does not take you against the current most of the way and then straight up Lookout Mountain?! (After that, the run seemed like an afterthought. I do remember that it was hot and there were hills, but compared to the rest of it....)

Well, the trip was a success and the kids and adults had an amazing, educational experience.

The 'ghost tour' is of the Sorel Weed Mansion in Savannah. The tour was really a walking history lesson with some discussion of what people have experienced in the house, followed up with how they have debunked the majority of the experiences.

The field trip was sign up only, so all 350 students didn't go. Parents knew the full itinerary before they signed up their child to go.

My big issue was the lack of appropriate accommodations in many places for the students we had in wheelchairs or on crutches. Difficult in historic places, yes, but at one point I gave a piggy back ride to a student so she could participate.

Race report is up. Best part of the day: the weather was one million times better than last year and none of my friends got hurt. Next best part of the day: on-site post-race beer.

That was one of the most amazing things about IM Vietnam--some of the years I did it, a Budweiser Girl (or guy) actually handed cold beers to people in the finish chute! The last year I did it, they brought them to the ice-water filled kiddie pools just after the chute. Probably not the healthiest thing to do--starting rehydration with that tends to give me a headache-- but it sure tasted good at the time.

Well it was Budweiser...  for me that is almost always a guaranteed headache!  Thankfully our beer, while not free, was from a local craft brewer so it was of better taste and quality than Bud!

Morning (to most) Manatees!  I'm home and survived Choo! Had some issues on the day, finished about 30-45 minutes slower than anticipated, but am happy to have managed things and am determined to conquer this long course curse I seem to have!! But, I am taking a break from long course for a year or so-I think, to recharge and will concentrate on sprint and olys and run stuff!

Here's the race report.
