I have a question on ...peeing etiquette....
I read in Lisa's race report about this fascinating amount of relaxation provided by peeing along the swim, and am now super curious. I have heard of the practice of peeing during a race, including marathon swimmers' advice: if the swimmer ahead of you has stopped, it means #2...
I'm sorry if this question seems like too much, but what is the proper way to pee in a large crowd of swimmers? And what if a fellow swimmer pees? Do you get to see it?
Can you share your experience and best advice?

I have never known anyone to stop and pee while swimming. This generally takes place in a wetsuit, and as the song goes, you just "let it go" while swimming. I guess if physically unable to (I've heard some people can't), you could just swim off to the side a little and tread water. Not sure if there's much etiquette about it or not! I have never noticed anyone else peeing. It's all water! (Most of my tris have been ocean swims, so there's REALLY a lot of water, and it's usually not that clean to begin with. Even in a lake, it would be hard to notice.) I guess the exception for etiquette would be pre-start pees. If someone in a wetsuit goes off a little ways by themselves before the start and their lower body is in the water, it's probably not for meditation purposes, and I would stay clear!

Peeing on the bike....as long as it's on your own bike/person.
Peeing on the run....why not? We're all wet by then anyway, and sponges are usually on offer if cleanup is needed.

The only really yucky situation I have had with pee is in a full IM situation with change tents. If you change for the run after having peed on the bike, it is a bit embarrassing (but you are probably not the only one who peed on their clothes) in the tent, and definitely gross to deal with post-race after the wet stuff has sat around for a while, often overnight for full IM.

Cannot do it.  Cannot pee while swimming or biking (probably not running either, but have never tried).  Cannot relax enough.  Now, I have done so in transition....not always by choice, but simply that I couldn't relax enough on swim or ride, and once I stop moving, it is on!  I would be one of the ones who moves off to the side and stops swimming.  And I am certain that I have swum through others urine, but wouldn't have known it.  I am way more grossed out by dead fish and seaweed than urine--generally, it is sterile at least!

Maybe I am just overly relaxed! I had never been able to pee on the bike but suddenly developed the ability in the middle of my first (and, given the past few months, quite possibly only) full IM in November. Not sure if I could repeat that feat on a short ride or not.

I cannot do it here of there,
I cannot do it anywhere.
I cannot pee on the swim
In a wet suit or on a whim
I cannot do it on a bike
all by myself or on a trike
I would not could not on the run
I cannot pee during a race
In the stinky pot o potty is my only place.

I can in the water, but I have to stop, so I just tough it out until after I change.
It so wet and there is so much water, no one will know if you go. So no real etiquette problem.
I have tried on the bike and have never been able.

I can't pee while swimming either. I can't even pee in the wet suit while standing in the water. I am the person who finishes the swim, takes off her wet suit and runs to the port-a-litter-box. I can't even imagine peeing on my bike or on the run.

It's gonna be great!

This is the part that I was referring to:

The Finish
During a recent visit to Cherokee for another event, we met with the folks at Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort and nailed down the details for the race finish.  This is going to be so cool!

Teams will finish on the path along the stream that runs between the casino and hotel.  Each team will be able to meet their final runner at the path entrance and cross the finish line together.  Upon finishing, each team will pick up their finisher medals and either hang out in the finish area - where there will be a bar - or head inside and upstairs to the post-race area.  There you will take your team photograph and join in the celebration with your complimentary beer and food inside a heated banquet hall.  We will have a large screen showing football so it will be a great place to hang out and swap stories with teammates and other teams.

I think that this is the path they are talking about

  • on the bike, consider where your water bottles are (and who is around you).
  • I would not recommend doing this near a bike marshall
  • If this becomes urgent, I would recommend doing this on a long downhill (again, consider your surroundings).
  • I'd really really prefer that people not do this while waiting in line at the swim start. I suspect that the local residents agree.

The only time I've ever peed on my bike was when I got buzzed by a truck and was scared. It was not a purposeful action!
As far as swimming, I can't pee while I'm kicking for some reason. Maybe somewhere in the last third of the swim, if I've got clear water around me, I'll go ahead and go so that I don't have to deal with wet wardrobe wrangling in the port o potty.

The only swim action for me would be in the warm up swim (sorry, TMI!) or if there is a line to get out of the water. Otherwise, forgetaboutit!

More Relay Talk!

I had many many hours to listen to podcasts on the way to and from Chattanooga last weekend. One of them was about relays. Well, specifically it was about rainy run relays and I know that we are going to have awesome weather  for Land and Sky but there were still a few good nuggets in there about logistics. I know that TJ, Ann-Marie, and I have all done van relay type events before. I don't know about Melanie, Mary Stone, Karl the Beer Sherpa or Robin. Anyway, the van hopping was a good refresher to me as well. And I had never heard the drier sheet tip before!

Lol! This sums up my experience too! Other than the try on the bike statement, I haven't even tried. Basically, I hit the porta potty on my way out of t-2.  For IM Choo i also did a pit stop on the 2d loop of the run. I lucked out and was able to use a real bathroom on the course and it was clean and air conditioned and empty!  Maybe if i were vying for a Kona slot i'd consider just letting things go (or trying to), but o/w i am not peeing on myself!!

And I agree with Janyne - walking through all the pee on the concrete path at the swim start is disgusting! C'mon people hold it!!

No worries, this was a comment made by marathon swimmer, on the 10 or 20K swim..... (I should've made it clear it applied only to long distance swimming!)

Thank you all for your advice. I don't think I would have a relaxation problem while swimming (i cannot pass a concept of peeing on the bike, at least not yet...). My biggest worry, though, was that if I did not want to make a person behind me uncomfortable, and also did not want to have a person in front of me to discomfort me... But based on what you say, that is barely noticed. Which makes me feel better now

I'm with the others, I had to pee big time on my last race in the water and just couldn't do it while swimming. I just assume the swim start is about equal parts lake water and urine from all of the athletes. NC Lakes are generally gross enough that it I'm not sure which is worse. As far as etiquette - I highly doubt anyone around you would know what you are up to in the water.

I don't think I've ever peed more than at Chattanooga last weekend LOL! I held it until I got in the river, but MANY didn't. The ramp walking down to the water smelled so incredibly gross. I wasn't bothered by physically walking in urine, but the smell was awful.

For me, the key to peeing during the swim is to have a wetsuit on and stop kicking. Even then, many of you read in my RR, I can't completely empty my bladder, but it helps.

Never peed myself in T1 before, but I did at Chatt. Just... let some go at my transition spot. I was already soaking in river/urine water so... shrug.

I have definitely peed on the bike a few times -  it's purely a time saver. I'm always nervous about making the cut off times, and waiting in a line of 10 people at a porta potty seems like such a waste of time, and a risk for BOPers. Last weekend, I peed on the bike twice (going downhill, no one around me), but then I got some massive chaffing on my butt cheeks that still hasn't gone away.  Sitting in wet shorts for 30+ miles does that I guess. Next long course, I'll coat my booty with chamois cream as a precaution.

I am thinking of doing the Sufferfest yogs/strength stuff. The subscription yoga sites ate all $99+ so doing a cycling/tri specific program for that price seems fine to me. Plus I think that I might want to do the Tour de Sufferlandria  next year. Have you found those parts of The Sufferfest to be beneficial and/or enjoyable?

I'm happy with the Endurance Nation plans and I really like Coach Patrick. I want to layer the yoga and strength with the EN plans (yoga for sure but will also look at the strength stuff).

I know that there are at least two Sufferfest subscribers here do I thought I'd ask here. I hope everyone is having a great weekend!
