Total Time = 4h 37m 31s
Overall Rank = 63/1256
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/85
Pre-race routine:

Had a nice dinner with the BT crew at the Chancery Friday night. Nice pasta dish for eats. Woke up at 2 am and slammed an Ensure then back to bed...or tried to. There were a bunch of people getting back from the bars at 2:30 am and they were partying in their room which was near mine -kept me awake and never got back to a sound sleep. Ate a Clif bar, banana and another Ensure at about 4 am. Since I couldn't sleep I got up, organized everything and drove to the venue. The silver lining in not getting much sleep was that I got a sweet parking spot near the transition area.
Event warmup:

Standing in the porta potty line. They needed more. Brought my bike pump back to the vehicle and got my wetsuit. Back to the T area, made sure everything was in place and then jogged down the beach to the swim start area. Quick swim to warm up and then got in the start area.
Swim
  • 39m 53s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

My goal for today was to not repeat what I've done the last few races. The past few weeks I would try to go fast and end up just thrashing around. I can swim OK in OW practice, but in races I get out of control. Today I just wanted to take long, full strokes and get long with my arms. Focused on rotating my hips/core and keeping good head position. At least I broke 40 minutes for the first time for a HIM, so I'm pretty happy with the swim - considering how much I suck. They had larger buoys marking the course this year so sighting was much easier than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmmm...swim faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

The bikes were really tight together on the racks so I got out of my normal transition routine a little. Seems like it took a long time for me. Didn't put the shoes on the pedals this time because I didn't want to take a chance of a shoe getting caught on someone else's bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 2h 25m 54s
  • 56 miles
  • 23.03 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed hard the entire ride, but for some reason I had a tough time settling into what I thought would be a decent HIM pace. After doing so many Olys this season I started getting worried that I was pushing too hard for today. Probably was a little too conservative, but overall satisfied with the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not much, maybe push a little harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

There were very few bikes in the Elite racks when I finished the bike leg, so I was able to pull off a nice transition in T2.
Run
  • 1h 28m 58s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt a little heavier than usual, calves a little tight. Getting used to the new bike I guess. Pretty much pushed hard the entire race but I feel like I lost my concentration for a few miles until mile 9 when I re-focused. Need to focus more at Pigman HIM in a few weeks.

It was cool to be able to see the pros during both loops of the course. David Thompson continues to dominate his races. I could not believe the leg speed/turnover of Lisa Bentley - incredible. I thought I recognized pro Heather Gollnick (multiple IM winner) out there and sure enough, she was on the results list.

It was hilarious when I crossed the finish line. My legs were a little wobbly and I kind of bent over and then crouched to the ground to get my balance. Immediately a couple of woman yelled "Medical !!!" That was a first for me. I jumped right up and said (laughing) "MEDICAL ???, no way, don't ever say that!!!!" Everyone laughed. I think they were just anxious to get their first medical customer of the day. Volunteers did a great job.
What would you do differently?:

Focus more during the middle miles
Post race
Warm down:

Headed straight to the food tent. No pasta dish this year, which was pretty disappointing. Half a PB & J sandwich, cookies and some cold root beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still need to get accustomed to the new bike,

Event comments:

This was a PR for a half ironman by 8:47. Previous best was on this course - 4:46:18 last year here and placed 102 overall. Gotta be happy about that :)

Overall AG placing reflects my time versus the 45-49 AG even though I was in the Elite Master wave. Elite wave start prevents an offical AG podium. Only one guy older than me placed higher overall, by 5 minutes (son of a b*tch).

I heard a lot of words of encouragement from fellow BT members during the race. THANKS!!!! Hopefully I yelled back something coherent when you did so.

Finished the night off with a pint of chocolate Haagen Dazs in my final splurge before the IM WI weight trimming phase.

It was a great day for a race.  Nice to meet so many BT'ers at the race and to hear them yell to me during the race.  Thanks!!

Awesome race, Jim!  Sounds like you were one of the few of us who didn't hammer the bike too hard and pay for it on the run.  Smart racing.

Okay, that time is just SICK!!!  In a great way of course.  And I’ll agree with Loosey, in the few race reports of pre-RaceReports (log postings) yours is the first that didn’t state overcooking your grits on the bike or simply crashing.

Have fun at Pigman.

I will echo fellow BT'ers on here...DAMN!! You really cooked on every leg of the HIM!!

GREAT job!!

I forgot to mention, so I'm going in and editing my comment...

I was out there cheering on all you 1/2'ers, and I was at the bottom of the hill in between miles 15 and 16 (I think), when you made the right hand turn onto Higway 20, so I'm sure I yelled something as you SOARED by me!!

Sweet time. Congrats on finishing in such fine fashion with a PR. Nothing feels better than crossing the line with a PR, even if the race wasn't perfect. Good luck in a few weeks.

Way to go Jim. I'll see you at Pigman.  Of course I'll probably only see you at the start and at the end, but I'm sure we will cross paths.  Great job once again.

I did see you.  I passed you on the left hand turn off of the long straightaway and then you take a quick right on to the road that goes to the zoo.  I yelled "Hey Tammy" right as we were taking the corner....I guess not loud enough.  You were in the zone of pain I guess.

Awesome race Jim!

It was great to meet you, albeit only briefly, during the pre-race dinner.  You're going to kick some serious tail at IMWI.

You definitely lived up to the 'runner' part of your name on the course on Sunday.

Saw you on the run and yelled 'Go Birkie!' but you blew past so fast, I wasn't sure if you heard.  Heh.
