Well right now I am in COJ instead of attending to the stacks on my desk. Seems like there might be an issue there.

No way Lara. I only procrastinate on certain things. Otherwise I try to rush everything and get it done as soon as possible.

Lists.  Use them all the time.  Find great satisfaction in marking them off.  Helps me focus on one task at a time.

There's only one cure, and Nike got it right:  Just do it.

Seriously though, that's the only way I could get myself trained out of it.  It's a brain thing.  If you are serious about changing the behavior, you have to program your brain.  The way I started was by not letting anything slide.  Not even the tiniest thing.  If I laid my eyes on something that needed to be done, I did it.  Right then.  No internal conversations, so room for angel on one shoulder / devil on the other type debates.  I did it and now. Boom. Done. When you see something that needs to be done, your body is moving on it before your brain really has a chance to kick in.  And eventually, it just becomes second nature.  And then, when it does, the next step is to allow some more processing time that revolves around priorities, but still doesn't leave any room to let anything slide.  It's a "OK, this is hot, I'll do it now and then this, then this...." right on down the line to include everything.  It's only when you have really mastered getting things done on a regular basis and feel comfortable that you are in control of the behavior, that you start allowing yourself to talk about letting something slide  - but for only X amount of time.  You say, "I'm going to let the dishes sit tonight, I'm really wiped out.  But I'll do them tomorrow.  And then, you do them tomorrow - no negotiating.

It sounds kind of weird, and there's a bit of up front work, but it really is effective.

Now, do NOT ask me how to train a HUSBAND'S brain....because I have been pitifully unsuccessful in all my efforts.....

I don't consider it as much procrastination as "always something better to do". Sometimes the something is nothing. Sometimes the something is COJ.

Make lists. Separate the items into a "Needs" list and "Wants" list. Attend to the needs immediately and take care of the wants whenever you get time. Lots of people combine the two and get overwhelmed. I may want to run down to the bike shop and buy a new (insert item of choice here) but I need to pay my bills and research my benefits option for next year.

Hmmm.  I find list-making a fantastic procrastination tool for me...I can spend hours making a list of the things that would take me 5 minutes to get done.  On my list this morning...return a book to the library downstairs from my office (took longer to write it on the list & then cross it out) than it did to put it on the list...call my secretary to do something for me (well, it turns out she's sick today so its a darn good thing I took the minute to put it on my list)...hmmm, just thought of a couple other things I should put on my list.

I like to bounce back and forth between list making and BT to see how little I can get done.

Kristen

Lara - 2007-10-08 12:21 PM i'm not even sure i spelled it correctly..  but is anybody else a HUGE procrastinator?  i have a few things that i've been putting off and i have NO idea why or how to motivate myself to get this crap done...

Yeah, I was going to be ambitious and wash both bikes yesterday. If not both, at least the summer one... but I did neither.

You know what would have been hilarious? If no one had responded to this for two or three days.

But seriously, never do tomorrow what you can do the day after.

I heard this quip in undergrad and has stayed with me ever since (and become a somewhat personal mantra)

the sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

on second thought - doesn't really relate to procrastination, but it could if you are on a deadline.

One time I was forced to sit through a CLE, ok it was a free lunch, but they talked about procrastination.  The speaker gave the general rule that if it takes more then 3 minutes to accomplish the task - you should just do it rather then even writing it down.

Whatever!

All I remember was that the Tuna Salad was pretty good that day.

Don't you mean LESS than 3 minutes? Just get it done.

Read the book "Getting things Done" by David Allen. It's changed my life. Seriusly.

Google "Getting things done" or just "GTD" and you'll find tons of blogs about the method.
