not quite sure where this will go, but in response to the Classic BT thread, I am starting the When did you come out of the shadows thread. I stopped lurking on BT on 12-01-03. Member number 481.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=490&posts=5&start=1

This, to the best of my knowledge is my first post. I know Chris Tree and Lara were on the introduce yourself thread before me, but it is up to them to chime in

Here' smy first-ever post:

"Hi! I'm a vet triathlete that is getting back into the sport after a 4 year layoff. I done dozens of races, but none any longer than Oly distance. I'm racing at Gulf Coast half-iron in May, and my plan is to race at Great Floridian in October. I'm currently coaching three newbie triathletes for Team in Training who will be competing at St. Anthony's in April. I'm a strong swimmer (college All-American) and cyclist (i won a Norba NCS hillclimb race at Big Bear in '97), but a weak runner (plenty of endurance...4 marathons under my belt) but sloooow."

Shortly after that, I started with the giving.

Recently had "friends" coerce me into signing up for the big local triathlon. What was I thinking? Looks like a great site and forum, let me introduce myself

48-yo male, married, three sons. Woke up New Year's Day 1999, realized I was fat, old, ugly and stupid, decided to do something about the fat part. Started walking, lost 65 lbs. then started running. Ran my first 10K on my 45th birthday, ran my first marathon fourteen months later, ran three more that year (2001) and, of course, developed an overuse injury. Started cycling as I recovered, got hooked on that. In total, have now run nine marathons (Chicago will be #10) and ridden a dozen or so centuries.

Used to think I was a good swimmer until I tried to swim for any distance, quickly convinced otherwise. Lack of swimming ability and time has kept me from tri-ing, but now I'm roped into it. Will do the CajunMan Triathlon (.5/20/3.1) on September 12, but may do a shorter one in August to get my feet wet (intentional pun).

Look forward to all the good advice and help you guys are going to give me!

Cheers Ontherun! Strange seeing The Bear and Jim's first posts... Its like they have been here forever, part of the furniture! Just look at those post counts! How the hell do you track down your fist post! I'm sure mine would be something very banal, and prolly mentions Canadian girls and how I couldn't swim before!

I'm pretty sure this has to be your first. It's on the day you first registered and in the "Introduce Me" forum. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25&posts=1&highlight=a&highlightmode=1#M38

I've always dabled in running and cycling (bike for recreation usually, running to keep fit) but recently started putting on the pounds. I weighed 16st at January this year, I joined weight watchers to accompany my wife, but it worked, I was initially a little worried about the low intake of carbs but I have built them back up again now, offset by the additional training.

What with a recent office move we are now situated nearer the public pool, so some swimming was ideal to add to my weightloss/fitness regime.

When people hear that i was 16st, 5' 10'' tall, they seem to think that I was a bit of a 'couch potato' however I have always thought of myself as fit, always keeping my hand in with some sort of physical exercise.

However, all three events sort of came together, and the logical conclusion was to enter a triathlon. A novice distance (200m swim, 12k bike and 2.5k run), is my first attempt (Jul 20th), but hoping to finish well up the field, I know i'll never come first.

I drew up a training regime, with great help from this site (check out the swimming pointers, swimming has never been my strong point, but these tips have certainly helped).

Anyway, after what is now just over four months of training and watching what i eat, I weigh in at 12st 10lb, and my first triathlon is within my grasp. May be a step up in distance to a sprint for my next event?

So, uh, Bear ... I understan how triathlons made you less lazy and less fat and, heck, may have even made you feel less old, but are you still stupid?

I don't remember mine -- something like `I'm Tony. I wear two pair of goggles.' And such.

I think I found mine.  A few months after I registered.

"So here I am, "lurking" on the site for over two months, failing to introduce myself. Recently translplanted myself to Northern VA, and expect to try my first tri in Spring '05. I've been running as long as I can remember (my Dad bought me a shirt when I was 4 that read "I ran a 2-mile and a 5K..." and I actually did! I have a newspaper article to prove it) and right now most of my bike time is spent off road (I'm open to advice on making the transition from MTB to Road). I know how to swim, uhh... yeah, thats the part that'll need the most work.

Great site by the way.

I am seriously considering doing my first Triathlon on March 28, that gives me a little over a month to get ready. The tri is 1500 meters, 40k, 10k. I have a couple questions.

1. I can do the run and the ride individually without a problem, but have never done them together. I am also not sure about the distance for the swimming, but I should be able to handle it as well (I have never done any distance swimming). I should also mention the fact that I weigh a very fit 260 pounds. Should I start at this level?

2. Where is a good place to find out about transition set up (particulars like when do you drop of your bikes, are the transition areas between the swim and bike the same as between bike and run) , what should be at the areas....

3. What clothes are best?

4. Good training schedules...?

POSTED 2003-12-20

Hi everybody! I have been thinking of doing a tri for almost twenty years now. Yes, I know that seems like a rather long gestation period but I have so many excuses that it would take all day to list them. Suffice it to say that I have decided that, come hell or high water, I will do a triathlon this coming June; I had one in mind for May but I will be out of the country at that time. I am a part-time student at a university and thus can avail myself of the physical facilites, including an olympic size pool. I am well versed in all three disciplines, swimming, biking, and running but as you can tell by my "handle", cycling is my sport of choice. I have done an "unofficial" sprint tri at the school and find that my only weak link is swimming. Having done a sprint, I know that I can do an olympic tri, if not with ease, then at least without suffering a coronary. My ultimate aim is to complete a half marathon tri in September of 2004. I am not much for posting but I will be looking into this forum to see what information and tips I can pick up. Also, I know a good deal about road bikes so I will probably put in my five cents' worth every once in awhile.

Wow. Here is mine. I used to be so happy...

"Hi, I am relatively new to tri's. I have one full season under my belt. This year I have finished my first half Ironman (Ralph's). I wasn't very fast but I didn't stop smiling the whole time. I had a group of friends here in San Diego that all trained for our first half together. We all had plans of doing an Ironman in 2006. One of my friends signed up for Ironman Florida this year so that pushed our plans up a year. Now a few of us are doing IM Arizona in April 2005.
I was really scared because I haven't done a marathon before and am not a great runner.
All the Ironman forums are filled with people who have done millions of IM's before, which in some repects doesn't help me much.
I felt a lot better reading here that there are other tri newbies like Tiger Phil who are in the same boat.
I think this forum is great!
Thanks for having me
Tom"

Hello! I am a semi-new triathlete who got involved because I was bored of just running. I had been distance running for a long time, so I took up biking about 3 years ago and decided that was pretty fun too. And then a new Olympic-size swimming pool opened up just down the street from my workplace and I took it as a SIGN that I should start swimming. Poof...a triathlete is born. That was about two years ago. I did my first triathlon last June--the Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman in Lubbock, TX. Since I live so close I'll be doing it again this year and I just started training on Monday. I am trying the training plan on this site so we'll see how it goes. Anything has to be better than last year when I just hacked my way through it! I will be surfing the site A LOT in the near future and look forward to any advice I can get. My biggest weakness is the bike. I think just about everyone behind me after the swim passed me on the bike leg last year. And you know you are slow when you pull into T2 and there is a dude with a big medal around his neck already...So bike advice is especially welcome!

If there is anyone out there in Abilene who would like to train sometime, let me know. I just moved here a few weeks ago and would love someone to show me the best places!

Jennifer

This is me, Feb. 24th 2005.

Hi,

I registered and read the forums for the first time today. I must say I've been missing out on an awesome resource. I hope to get to know you all a bit better.

Here's a little about myself. I am a 27y/o female from Vancouver, BC. This will be my third season of participating in triathlons. In 2003 I did two sprints and one Olympic distance. Last year I did the same sprints, but couldn't get the Olympic distance in. I did do some bicycle racing (criteriums), one longer swim race, some swim meets, one 10km race and a half marathon, so hopefully I am well prepared to do a half IM in June. I've been training for it specifically since Jan. 31st following the program on the website. So wish me luck.

Jen

Oh btw, Chris, your new avatar is awesome.
