Subject: DO NOT GIVE UP

We are one week into the New Year.

Did you resolve to do a triathlon in 2009? Lose weight? Exercise consistently? The resolve that drove many just one week ago to declare this a year of increased exercise and  better eating habits, maybe even to declare that this is the year they complete a triathlon is waning.  Maybe that's the case with you.

You know what? It happens to all of us. It's normal. Anyone who's ever done a triathlon, from the person who did one Sprint to multiple Ironman finishers have all gone through the exact same thing. The idea of suiting up to go run in the cold, or drive to the gym, or have an apple instead of the cookies just seems...bleh.  I'll say it again: it happens to all of us. We all feel that way at times.

There are different ways of dealing with it. There's a phrase that's worked for me: "Screw lack of motivation. I'm going to do it anyway." You'll get past this. By doing your workout or following your nutrition plan now, when you just don't feel like it, you'll get in the habit of doing it regularly. That's what you need to learn now. Don't pay attention to the voice that says "it's only one mile, it's not worth doing"  or "I'll never be able to do a triathlon anyway".

You're in the period where how long you swim, bike, walk or run isn't important. What's important is that you just swim, bike, walk or run.

Picture yourself not at the finish line of a race, but at the starting line. Imagine having done the work to deserve your place at that starting line. Now do it.

Do something today to create the person you want to be tomorrow.

Go do your workout.

Do Not Give Up

Great post!!!

My question is "are people waning on their New Year's Resolutions already?" It is just the first week of 2009.

Fight to make training a habit.  Even if you can't get the full workout you wanted to in, just get something in.

If you have a 4 mile run to go on but are running out of time.  Get your stuff on and go for a 10 min run.  You still did something and that will go a long way towards it becoming a habit.

Thanks, Marma I don't have any tri-specific resolutions, but now is the time to stop slacking.

I can't remember where I read this but I tell myself this before a workout when I really don't feel like doing it:

I never regretted a workout, but always regret not working out.

This is the time of the year when it is most important to remind athletes to SUAT. When feeling down, procrastinating, making excuses, battling cold weather, etc just Shut Up And Train

(now I have to follow my own advice!)

Thanks, marma.

I was literally sitting here thinking "I'm going to skip my swim workout today" and decided to read this thread before logging off BT.

Now I'm headed to the pool instead of turning on the TV.

Thanks marma, good post.

Looking back at myself 5 and 10 years ago, you are right, i am the man i wanted to be.

It's in our thoughts, it's in our actions. We want to be somebody, we want to achieve something, we want to make something, we want to be healthy, strong, we want to make a difference in the world. And we get up and do it, no matter what, no matter if it's cold or hot, no matter if it rains or not, no matter if there is snow we just get out and grow. We grow as a person, we grow as triathletes.
We need to help each other, and when we feel we are down we need more support and help from each other then ever.

Thank you and who says anything about giving up?

This is my resolution for 2009; think about the long term, the short term is insignificant. Every time I skip a workout, I'm thinking about short term things. I'm tired, I'd rather stay at home, I don't want to get into that cold pool. But short term unpleasantness is fleeting. Whatever the negative sensation is, it'll be over fast, either as soon as I hit the water, or at the end of the hour.

What I really need to do is focus on the long term. What if my skipped workout means a 10 second loss in my next race? How about the hour I spend the rest of the day feeling guilty about not working out? There is no point in wasting that time on negative thoughts. What you gain from avoiding the small things is so much less important than what you can gain from sticking to your plans. Do the workouts and picture yourself smiling on that starting line.

This is a big key---just this morning my swim time got cut short by traffic but I had a great workout and feel much better for having gotten in the pool instead of just giving up on it all together!!

This post made me smile - because that "shut up and train" caught me on monday.  Thanks for this!!

I really want to do my first tri this year and the swim is my achilles. I had a new session of swim classes starting on Monday and it's at 8:30. I was tired, I really didn't want to go anywhere but i went. Only to find the pool closed.  Sigh, so i got back on the bus and debated with myself the whole time. I REALLY wanted to go home and lay on the couch but i went straight to my gym's pool instead. It was only 30 mins instead of an hour class but i didn't skip it. YAY.

Absolutely fabulous post!  And the follow up about getting in something rather than nothing is great.

When I'm thinking about skipping a workout I remind myself that I love myself enough to give myself that gift. Like yesterday for example.  I forgot my swim stuff for after my strength workout.  I knew if I made it home to pick it up I wouldn't make it back out.  So, I just headed straight for the gym and did a longer weights workout.  Still got something done from my training to do list for the week.

Now, where's my apple?

Awesome for you, dude!

If we spend our days waiting around for the perfect conditions to do something, we may never get it done.  Like my sig below says:  Don't make the perfect be the enemy of the good.  If five miles is scaring you off, do three, two or even one.

Great post!  (Er, Marma's.  Not mine. )
