Pre-race routine:

Lounging in my big azz beanbag with a beer, good company, some food and the pug in my lap watching house of cards :)
Event warmup:

Met up with my teammates for a warmup. Got in about 3 miles or so. Then headed down to the track.

This was all about execution rather than racing. The plan was to do the first two miles easy, approximately marathon pace, and then race. This was a key workout leading up to my half marathon in two weeks which is why I wasn't supposed to race the whole thing.

It was about freezing at the start with a few snow flurries. I opted to race in shorts and a tank top anyway because I run pretty hot. I wore arm warmers though, which I think was a really good decision.

I did as I was supposed to, taking the first two miles nice and easy. It was really cool running a race with so many of my teammates out there. I slowly ramped into race pace, took a gel at 3 miles then really went to work. I was just working on keeping nice and relaxed and focused.

I saw my coach at the turn around (where I stopped because I got confused if it was my turnaround or not. Total brain fart. Also, I hate the term brain fart.)

I was starting to feel really good as I headed back. Attacking the hills, staying relaxed and just enjoying the run. I was way ahead of all the other women so it was a touch lonely. A lot of neighbors had come out of their houses and they were cheering me on. Lot's of them letting me know I was the first lady and that I should try and catch the guys. It made me smile.

I almost took a wrong turn but corrected myself after I saw a volunteer waving his arms at me.

Finally I came down the little hill onto the track for the final 300. My friend was on the infield and was cheering me on. I really pushed hard and finished strong. I saw the clock and noticed I was about 20 seconds slow (per my coaches goal time for me.) It was only 2 seconds a mile slow but I was a little bummed, as this race was meant for execution.

However, winning OA was a little consolation and only 4 men beat me.

It was a really tough course so I really should be happy with my performance.

Also, this is why we have 'B' and 'C' (and 'D') races. :)
What would you do differently?:

Maybe just a touch less conservative at the beginning so that I could really nail that pace.

It was also my first time running this distance.

I didn't take any water. Not sure if that was the appropriate move or not. I was quite thirsty at the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran the infield and cheered on my teammates who were racing the 15 mile. Them folks are FAST!

Then I ran a full cool down for an 18 mile total for the day.

They had post race baked potatoes which were BOMB! I loaded that bad boy up with bacon, cheese, onions ... the works. Totally worth the tough race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Early race in the plan, just starting to really add some quality. It will all come together when it's supposed to :)

Great results, Adrienne!  And a new PR since the distance is new.  Love your pre-race (night before) routine, surely that gave you luck!  Baked potato bar at the end of a race?  Marry me! (had to throw that little AD-ism in there)  Seriously, great job, sounds like you are right on track for your half marathon in two weeks.

Hey Adrienne - very nice work, and I would call that very well executed for the first tome running a 15k - I always find that distance to be really funny relative to execution for me, sort of like how the 800 is funny relative to the 400 and mile. Congratulations again - can't wait to see what you can do on real A-race day!

I have been waiting all weekend for this, and you didn't disappoint, dearest.

Hearing that you felt good throughout is as exciting as your OA placement and mpm, all of which together make it just an awesome race.

Dang - how can you NOT love a race that has baked potatoes at the end!!  I once signed up for a race just because they had waffles for post-race food.  

It's going to be so much fun reading your race reports this year - I can't wait for your A race!

Yeah, very interesting observation of the 400, 800, mile. I have to say, I was really happy I was running the 15K while a lot of my friends were running the 15-miler. I was feeling quite smug at the turnaround

an odd distance and non 'A' races always have a pacing alteration...but as, usual, VERY well done

keep up the strong work and don't indulge in too many brews-you gotta be lean and mean in late April...
