If I have a piano handy, sitting down and banging out something big, booming, and preferably dark. Rachmaninov usually works.

Alternatively: kneading bread dough. I find it immensely satisfying, especially when picking up the dough and slamming it back down onto the work surface.

Music...loud, angry music. Darkest Hour usually does it, although depending on the subject of anger (which has lately been political) it's been something with a bit more political bent.

There is nothing I can do to take out anger/frustration besides just waiting it out.

Time to cool down is all that helps.  As for what I do during that time?  What actaully helps me is going to see a movie.  I get lost in the film and two hours later, I don't feel as bad.

I was gonna vote for controlling it and having self control.  I was also gonna go into a lengthy explanation of why certain world views make this a relatively easy prospect if you have right perspective, but I didn't want to make anyone angry.

How about spending time thinking about the sources of the anger and frustration instead of a way to 'take it out.'

Personal reflection, meditation, relaxation techniques will help you much more than the euphoric, adrenaline release.

Screaming and beating on things normally works for me.  IE, to the point of exhaustion.  THEN, I can go back and work on the actual issue with a clear mind.

Beat your kids, kick your dog and then drive around the town after getting drunk while texting your mistress.

Going for a nice hard run. I guess you could say running hard is a "violent adrenaline rush", but it seems to work for lots of people. And certainly healthier than beating things up or getting wasted.

How about sex, and then a slice of pizza?

But the pizza gets delivered after only 30 minutes.

LOL

But I'd try lifting.  I knew *gasp*.  I used to get all my anger out by lifting heavy things...well okay not too heavy but all loud angry scream music and lifting helped me.  and I felt great after it.

Run until your brain is mush and then you won't care anymore.  That's what I'll be doing later today - a half mary should do it.

For some this works great.  I am not one of those some.  Just because one chooses a more "aggressive" release doesn't mean that one has not reflected upon the source of the anger/frustration.  Meditation and relaxation techniques are awesome tools for me for some things but when I am angry and frustrated I need to release that junk OUT of me in more forceful way.  It's like the difference of letting something gently float out of me rather than me throwing it off a cliff.  The adrenaline release from that does wonders for me!

X2 on that and the shooting.  Reflection, meditation, and such work for the self-aware, which seems to be a small part of the population.

Regardless of whether or not that's true, I think there is probably a good and proper time for both. I happen to think quite well when I'm out running hard. And I run well when I'm angry or upset. And sometimes you just need to get the frustration out so you CAN think clearly - esp. if you're not the type of person who is normally aggressive. It's great to be all zen and whatnot, but repressing anger and frustration can be just as destructive as "flying off the handle". As long as you're not physically hurting anyone else (or yourself), and it makes you feel better, who the heck cares?

I have no doubt that it does wonders for you.  It does wonders for me too.  That is the point of short term adrenaline release--it is euphoric.  I stand by my comment that the adrenaline route isn't optimal.  Most people would be much better off with other techniques.

I would also suggest that a link exists between aggressive and forceful release and other aggressive behavior.  A person doesn't just start kicking the dog overnight.  There is a history of aggressive releases.  That is the way the deal with frustration until one night the dog is there instead of another outlet.  I am certainly NOT saying this is you.  It is a generalization that I would theorize is deeply rooted in psychological evidence.
