DD all the way for me. Starbucks always smells like something is burning, and I can't get past the pretension of the different size cups and the 'barristas'. Its small/med/large/x-large, coffee guy....

I drive past the original DD everyday on my commute to/from work.

4agoodlife - 2012-10-03 9:12 PM Wow...I've never lived near anything but Starbucks. Don't even know what Wawa is, but obviously missing out. :/
That being said, decaf DD ground is really good for evenings and their iced vanilla is my choice when I have options.
Anyone had Lavazza? So smooth...very fine ground. A friend gave me a bag, and I've hoarded it. The only place I've seen it brewed other than my kitchen is in the Denver airport.

Oh you definitely are missing out. http://www.wawa.com

Based in PA, stores in eastern PA, NJ, MD, DE, VA, and now FL. Where I live is the boundary area of Sheetz (based in Pittsburgh) and WaWa (based outside Philly). Sheetz is definitely second rate compared to Wawa (except for the Sheetz cinnamon rolls).

There's a wawa two blocks from my house, but I go to DD. Time to do a taste comparison. We have a bunch of coffee houses in the neighborhood, but unfortunately they are mostly staffed by 20-something year old hipsters and I can't stand the "I'll serve you when I feel like it, old man" attitude.

now is the perfect time of year for the taste test.  pumpkin spice at wawa, AMAZING.

also, the stuck up coffee shops usually have amazing coffee.  there is one here that i love by the college, but i feel like i need to buy some horn-rimmed glasses before i go in there...

I thought they were based in metro DC, as thats the only place I've ever noticed them!

So I don't drink coffee, but I like Starbucks Strawberry frap, and Dunkin's doughnuts.  However, now that I live in metro Boston, DD is the only choice!  Almost literally.  There are 24 DD's in my town and just 2 Starbucks lol.

So someone sets up a nice debate between two major national chains but then sabotages it by allowing addition options. Did they allow Gary Johnson in the Presidential debate last night? Or Jill Stein? No!

I'll take DD over Starbuck every time, but Wawa trumps them both.

How does My Starbucks Rewards work?

It’s as easy as registering a loaded Starbucks Card. This will automatically enter you into the Welcome level of the program, which means you’ll receive a free beverage on your birthday.

Once you have visited and used your card five times (which earns you 5 Stars), you will move into our Green level, where you will receive the following benefits:

  • All Welcome level benefits
  • Free select syrups and milk options such as soy
  • Free refills on brewed or iced coffee or tea during the same store visit
  • Free tall (12 fl oz) beverage with one pound of whole bean coffee purchase
  • Special exclusive offers and coupons (If you want to receive everything, please make sure you opt-in to Starbucks emails)

After you earn 30 Stars in 12 months (25 additional Stars after initially qualifying for Green level), you will qualify for the Gold level.  At this level you earn the following benefits:

  • All Welcome and Green level benefits
  • A personalized card (unavailable in stores) and Welcome Packet
  • The ability to earn a free drink after every 15 Stars.

Starbucks recently did away with the free soy and syrup as well as the free coffee when you buy beans. I'm a gold card holder, though, and like getting the free drink coupons every once in awhile.

I was in NJ last month and bought Wawa ground beans to take back to Chicago. I'm drinking that right now.

That's not a very good analogy. After all, one of those things really matters. The other is an election. We have one of those every couple of years.

When I lived in Boston I drank far more DD. I liked it but you had to be careful ordering from the store or else you get a coffee with ~1/2c sugar in it ("coffee black" won't order you a coffee in many DD Boston retail locations that doesn't contain an insane amount of sugar, you have to specifically ask for no sugar)

Now that I live in the Seattle area you can guess what I drink more of. There's easily dozens of SBUX within a short drive of my house/office. I don't seem to be able to even find a DD in the entire state of WA.

All else being equal though, if I find a Peet's or Torrefazione (though I think their retail stores are closed) I would choose those over SBUX or DD any day.

I'm a Starbucks Dark Roast fan.  Don't like the house brand (Pike).  I agree it tastes burnt.  DD is very blah to me.  Why don't they offer more coffee flavors at there stores?  I know I can take them home but I rather try them in the store first.

WaWa coffee ROCKS!!  We have 3 that just opened up here in Florida.  In Orlando about an hour away.  When I go to the In-Laws/family I stop for a Coffee and a Sub!  YUMMY!!

Sheetz?  Loved that place when I was in College.

I love me new SB app.  Went twice now and paid with my phone like fancy person...  They make it TOO easy.  It's like the same premise of the casinos using poker chips instead of money.  You don't realize you are spending it!

Just let them flash your phone and walkout with free coffee!  It's free, right?

Fokker416 - 2012-10-04 5:03 AM I'm seasonal.  DD most of the year until SB gets their Egg Nog lattes in.  Straight coffee, I like DD better, but those egg nog lattes are my personal coffee overall fav.

Agreed.  DD lattes are really not very good.  But what DD really does best is plain regular coffee...I hate plain regular coffee from Starbucks...and their iced coffee isn't good either.  DD does regular coffee and iced coffee VERY VERY VERY VERY well....but I'd still pick a plain DD coffee over a starbucks latte any day of the week.

That being said, I'm allergic to dairy but I always get at least one starbucks eggnog latte a season...hang the consequences...that shizzle is GOOD!  I've even taken to making my own with lactaid eggnog (doesn't help my dairy allergy but does help the lactose intolerance so it's only half as painful).  The SECRET is that it isn't pure eggnog they are frothing...2/3 eggnog, 1/3 milk!  Mine are *almost* as good as theirs....

BTW, I see several people talking about Starbucks rewards...hate to say it, but by taking away free soy and syrups they've taken away most of the point...if it's just a free drink every XX drinks, it isn't nearly as valuable to me.

I prefer the taste of DD regular coffee over Starbucks regular, but I have to get DD to go. I have no business sitting inside a donut shop, as I have no control while in there. However, at Starbucks I have a nice time sitting and watching people. I like the Starbucks environment.

That all being said - I prefer coffee at home from my own press. Cheaper, better taste and I can drink it in my underwear

This discussion of Wawa is very useful, thank you.   In the past, when visiting the inlaws in Jersey, we've driven right by the Wawa to stop at DD for coffee.   This is great!  I had no idea they had good coffee.

Starbucks!

Both for regular coffee as well as for their seasonal lattes... pumpkin spice (out right now and soooo tempting me) and at Christmas their Gingerbread lattes.  Mmmmm... coffee....

I prefer a ceramic mug, but I can see how using your underwear would provide a different taste. Not sure I'd call it "better", but to each his own, I guess...

I frequent the independent place in my building. I mean they are big, but a mom and pop shop. The coffee is cheaper and better.
