When I see how fast and how nation wide something like spreads, it give more credence to stories like Contagion and The Stand.  If a truly nasty bug got out there, it would spread like wildfire apparently.

It would be curious who was case "zero" with this particular flu and how long ago that was?

I don't have the flu, but I've had a bad cold for almost 2 weeks now. Lots of coughing and lots of mucus. Hopefully it will leave soon.

I have that now and it's no fun.  Good way to lose some weight since I have not appetite.

If I got anything, it's that - but VERY mild.  No temp, minor congestion, tickle in the throat.  Could just be allergies or the cold weather though.  But it's been with me for a couple weeks.

Yeah, I don't have a fever or anything else. Coughing is really bad at night before I go to bed and when I wake up it takes an hour or so for me to clear all the buildup from the previous night out of my nose/throat. This morning it was much better than it has been so I'm hopeful tomorrow it's gone!

cold here too. No voice, coughing, sometimes phlegm.  Sore throat.  Not strep, since I have no fever and its tolerable, but it still is a bad virus to have if you teach 7 classes a day to 30-32 kids.

I tried to get a flu shot yesterday...everyone was out or the times they had were during the workday. Gee, thats helpful.

lisac957 - 2013-01-09 11:46 AM Question to those who have been "hit" with the flu: Did you get the flu shot?

I know this isn't your question, but I have never had a flu shot that I can recall.  And I haven't had the flu in about 20 years.  Colds, minor stuff that doesn't impact you enough to stay home from your normal day.  But not the flu.  I'd be pretty interested to hear if others who seem somehow immune to it have had flu shots or not.

I've never gotten the shot and haven't gotten the flu either.  But my wife and I are seriously considering getting it.  I've done some preliminary research and there is so much gobbledygook out there it is hard to get good info.  CDC seems to be the best.

ETA: we have never gotten the shot because we have never gotten the flu.  And in general, we don't get sick and rarely use any meds.  So it isn't because I'm anti-shot.  Just never really thought about it before.

Forgot to add when I started this --- I had the full blown flu (not a cold) in 2007 and it was the worst I can ever recall feeling in my entire life. I spent almost 5 straight days in bed, didn't feel 'right' for almost 2 weeks, and lost 14 pounds in the duration. Was awful. The muscle aches were the worst part. Fever was awful too. Hot, then cold, then hot. Rinse, repeat.... I now get a flu shot every year since.

Isn't the flu....in the bathroom all day (both ends), chills, aches....can't eat. I haven't had that since I was a kid.

I do get a cold once a year....hopefully my Thanksgiving cold was it for the year.

YES!  Bronchitis/pneumonia.  Started 4 weeks ago.  On my second round of antibiotics.  Yesterday was the first day of feeling "normal".  Still coughing... but not as much.

No flu for me and I don't know anyone with it either. Most people I know have gotten the flu shot though.

I've had the flu a couple of times in my life, but never since I've gotten the flu shot for at least the last 10 years.

I got a cold this year. I typically get a cold every 2-3 years, and I got it this year and it was horrible. The actual cold lasted more than a week and I was coughing for a couple of weeks afterward.

no.

influenza is a respiratory tract infection though some people can also get GI manifestations

the muscle aches and fever are the hallmark - and very fast onset.

Yep.  Coworker got the bronchitis and a family member got the actual pneumonia and had to go to the hospital - all good now though.

Got sick around the second week of Dec, didn't see a doc or anything.  Started feeling better after a couple weeks.  Still had that nagging cough with chest congestion though.

On New Years Eve, I did a short run on the dreadmill and felt good.  Later that night I started getting chills and ran a fever.  The doc was closed New Years Day so I went in on the 2nd.  They ran the test and it was flu.  Got Tamiflu, the symptoms were about the same as last time.  Running the Disney ½ this weekend and haven't done much training because of the illnesses.

The flu (influenza virus) is characterized by sudden onset (mack truck like) of fever, muscle aches (ie you feel like even your hair hurts) and then some or all of: cough, congestion, vomiting, diarrhea - though some people just get the fever and myalgias.

There is both influenza A and B circulating right now. A is worse. The vaccine did not match B as well as it did A.  A few of my older patients who were vaccinated still got sick (this is the reason for everyone to be vaccinated to help protect the old, young and immunocompromised).

There are another couple of nasty viruses that I am seeing - where the cough hangs on a long time.

Fever
Aches
Sore Throat
Congestion
Coughing
Vomiting

Yep, he's got the flu.  Throwing up just hit on day 3.  So, what's the incubation of this bad puppy?  And no, nobody had the flu shot in our house this year.  Oh well, too late now.

There is a very nasty strain of the flu going around in the area.  The symptoms are quite intense and is knocking people off their feet for 5-7 days.  It also appears that those that have received flu shots are dodging this for the most part.  I work for a healthcare system where flu shots are mandatory or you will be required to wear a mask if you are in a patient care setting.

There have been several deaths in the State associated with the flu though I would imagine there are underlying medical conditions that have made these people more vulnerable.

Many people here including me had flu-like illness early in the school year (August and September). Fever, fatigue, body aches, head congestion, some got nasty, lingering coughs. There are a few cases now but not as many as earlier. Not sure if we piloted the current virus in Asia and it's become more virulent, or it was a different virus from the Southern Hemisphere flu season. Didn't get a shot this year as it was offered at work just before I had a race, but now thinking of getting one this weekend as I have asthma--might be too late as we probably have kids/faculty bringing back the virus from North America.

Just back from the UK - my sister, one of my nieces and one of my nephews had it and left with a really chesty cough for a couple of weeks.  I came home fine but my daughter has tonsillitis and an ear infection but no cold or flu.  She's on the mend but lethargic and tired still.

Other thing going round in the UK is norovirus - nasty stomach bug.  Here in Australia it's summer so hopefully nothing until June for us!

Nothing here in Beijing yet, although I did see that we had 2 cases of H1N1 here last week.   Haven't noticed anyone at the office being out (or in here with symptoms)
