Story: was never really a very active kid - did what I had to - to get by. I played high school softball and skiied a ton (both of which you can do fat). After college I took up mountain biking (which was always followed by beer and burgers). At at 37 DH decided he was tired of being fat so started running. After a year of following him around to races etc I decided if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Fast forward, to age 42 and probably 2 years on these forums I did my first IM. And next year I'm going back to do better - and DH is doing it too.

Family: DH, 2 cats and 1 greyhound

Training: I hired a new coach this year - she promises to kick my *** so we'll see

2016: IMMT in August, Patriot 70.3 in June - and we'll see what else comes up

2015: IMMT was the big one. I had a coach - didn't like his style although I did make it to the finish line in one piece. All my races are in my profile if you care to look. Nothing spectacular but not bad for someone who never ran before 4 years ago.

What makes me a good Manatee: I'm generally a nice person with a snarky attitude so while I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say I also offer comic relief

I'm so glad Janyne is keeping track - because MY GOD 21 pages in already!!

Yes, Janyne - on page 3 you mentioned my Garmin Swim. I love it - for what it is. It's a glorified lap counter and timer - which is all I really need.

On page 4 the question of cold weather pants came up - for SUPER COLD I go with the Craft cross country skiing pants - LOVE!! Windproof and soft on the inside. If it's below zero I put long underwear underneath too. FYI I don't run inside. EVER.

Yanti has a race ON MY BIRTHDAY! YAY!

21 pages already - oh my gosh. I did see lots of talk about nutella.
FYI flavor Nocciola OMG http://www.hammernutrition.com/products/hammer-gel-reg-.hg.html

I'm fairly new to Tri but used to read up a lot on nutrition from the perspective of strength training. Creatine is well supported for being quite effective for strength athletes, but I'm less sure about endurance. In any case, when you supplement it, it tends to build over time in the system so it would not be important to get it immediately after exercise. Plus it's pretty cheap to buy on its own so no need to pay a lot extra to have it pre-mixed into your protein powder. Again, not a nutritionist, but the most recent I had heard was that mixing in some carbs (such as a medium-acting carb like maltodextrin) along with the protein post-exercise can help jump-start recovery. Even better than just protein powder alone. Cheaper protein powders tend to already have some carbs in them given the much lower relative cost to protein powders, so you may already be getting a good mix if you check the label. Take all of this with a grain of salt because most of my info came from reading strength training nutrition information rather than endurance training info. There should be a lot of aminos in most high-quality protein powders (like whey). Of those, Leucine seems to have a special role in increasing the bioavailability of the protein for uptake.

I think a lot of the returning pod members tend to eat more real food than use such supplements. I know the question was specifically on supplements, but take another look at what the term means and then it should be easier to understand that there isn't an automatic need to take one (or several). The "supplement" is attempting to fill in where you have not been able to with other means. The actual food, in this case protein, is going to have the best quality protein. Be it meats (which will be complete) or combinations of plants to get all the parts you need. The protein powders will have various levels of quality. Whey is supposed to be good, but not sure it's always as good as the food. I haven't taken any in a long time, so haven't looked at which brands do a better job of it. Other cheap types may not be worth much of anything.

Remember what we're doing with these activities too. We're burning through fuel to go faster and farther. Protein is a building material for muscles, but also need to look at fuel. This will be from carbs and fats. Burn these up and then replace them. Before getting into how much to take, look at what you're doing. I'm wondering about the "always taken" part in particular. Most people don't burn off substantial amounts of energy in a number of their workouts. Going for a nice 30 minute run is not going to be a major energy expenditure. There isn't significant depletion of resources that can't be easily covered by eating well and normally throughout the rest of the day. Now when I do a hard weekday ride that can take a few hours, I can burn off 1,800-2,300 calories or so (another benefit of a PM!) and be up near threshold power (FTP) for near an hours worth of time through the use of intervals. That's going to burn well into some energy stores. Particularly the glycogen stores (refilled by carbs) as there was a lot of harder effort work that burns up more of that fuel source. Weekend rides can burn 3,000-4,500 calories at a time as I can be out for 4-5 hours at a time. That's a big hit at one time. It's helpful to have something sooner. In particular, having something within that 30-60 minute window where things can absorb more. Do know that you still take replenish after that, just back at your normal rate. Having said that, I do seem to recover better taking something right after the example workouts I gave even if they're the only workouts of the day, but also remember the amount of depletion going on from them. I have not noticed the same effect when doing an easy run of say 30-60 minutes.

Then with that window, it's nice to know, but it's not vital to hit it all the time. Where it's more helpful is with days that have multiple workouts. That's more when you replenish right after the early one to have your energy back up better for the second one later. If there isn't a second one, then it's really not a big deal. Something else to remember with these is that they count towards your total intake for the day. This is one way people can easily get carried away and wonder how they don't lose, or even gain, some weight. Shakes tend to be easy to make fairly calorie intensive, so adding them in without compensating elsewhere could leave you with taking in more than you think. Possibly considerably more. Often times I'll take care of recovery things by having a meal after ward. Sometimes things work out that way as several hours after work tends to be dinner time. Others times I plan it so that happens to help avoid overindulging. It sure does feel good having something after any type of workout.

And getting back to the fuel, since that's what we're burning then that's what we want to look at more. Protein still matters, but you'll burn through some energy. Some can be substantial amounts. For the recovery immediately after, the ration of carbs to protein can help with absorption. A ratio of 4g of carbs to 1g of protein comes up a lot as working well for this. And since you may now be adding even more food to post workout recovery, this why you really want to consider the larger picture of your day!

So, my long time running buddy is moving away! Well, she's still going to be in the city but it won't be so convenient to run together very often. I've been a bad running buddy for the last few years, what with going into tri and then having a baby ... but i will genuinely miss her and feel the loss. We've been running together since 2007 and trained with her for 4 of my 5 marathons (and same for her

do you have training friends? Have you had to deal when the moved/left/stopped training with you?

I went through this twice with good training buddies moving across the country. I won't lie, it really sucked and I really miss them! I am very much introverted, in both life and in training - so when I found other gals who would train with me, at my speeds, and be consistent - it was something I worked at to keep. I still do races with one of them (she's on BT so I get to keep up with her training) but I really miss our runs together.

A few years ago, on the spur of the moment I joined a local marathon training group. I met a few gals who I really clicked with and we ran probably 10-12 weeks worth of long runs together. But at some point, they decided they wanted to run at a faster pace and I got frustrated with all the effort I was putting in to join the group --- only to be running alone again. I still sort of keep in touch with them, but it really rubbed the the wrong way - not that they wanted to run faster, but the way it happened. Anyway, my point was that local training groups might be a good source for new training buddies, but it's hit and miss just like everything else.

Lots of introverts on here! Like me! I'm glad when I find a running buddy, but one or two is better than ten. When I lived in New York, I trained with and was coached by a guy who won tons of the local sprint races and was sort of semi-pro. We ran together 3-4 days a week for two years and he really became a role model and an older brother of sorts. He was the one who inspired me to do triathlons. When I moved to Texas about a year ago, I had no idea how to train without him there. Luckily I found a team a few months later that helped me learn how to train effectively.

I'm glad that you were able to hook up with a team!  That can make such a huge difference!

Same here. As much as I'm on my own now, i couldn't imagine trying to navigate all this on my own at that age. Very likely would have sought out a group or team to be with in person.

Whey and creatine are both complete proteins, but creatine has issues that whey does not. Creatine is more difficult to digest, and may cause an upset stomach in some people. Creatine is used more by weightlifters because it is supposed to be more effective is growth of the fast twitch fibers. That is why weight lifters like it, their entire sport is fast twitch dependent. Creatine is also great if you want to gain weight, because the protein will hold water in your muscles.
Whey protein is more easily digested and you will get more protein from it that you will with creatine. Plus you are less likely to have stomach issues because of it.
Neither is the best choice for you,if you are lactose intolerant, both are milk based products. In that case you should use a soy protein. The problem with the soy protein is that it is not a complete protein.
I use a whey based protein when I am trying to build muscle.
I also take a multivitamin and a B complex with C. I understand the pretty and expensive pee arguments of the no vitamin supplement group, but I figure it can't hurt.

Wow, busy group! I'm online most of the time on my phone and can't figure out how to reply to specific things with the mobile site.

To catch up- I only really had a running partner for a short period while I was in rad school. One of my friends lived in the same apartment and we trained for a half marathon together but then she gotsciatica and then moved to the other side of town. I like running with other people but find it difficult because different people have different goals. I do win with others and live it. I've always been a soloist cyclist.

I love love love Nutella. I am indifferent to pop tarts and despise coffee. Orange pekoe and diet coke are my caffinated beverages of choice.

No way I can catch up with all the posts, sorry pod! I was able to see that we're discussing training partners/groups.

When I first started I was like most I assume and was a loner. Now I'm only a complete loner when running.

Pretty quickly I joined a masters group and I love it. When I have to swim alone for whatever reason, it sucks. hard. Doing 4000 yards in a group setting goes by so fast. And you're more challenged by the intervals, so it's a better workout as well.

About halfway through the year last year I joined a cycling "racing" club. These guys are awesome. It is a challenge just to not get dropped. I love it, so much fun and such an amazing workout. I still do plenty solo rides and spin classes too.

Running takes the least amount of planning, so it makes it easier to just run alone all the time. Fit it in when you can.

Quick responses to what I saw:

Welcome back, Jonathan.  It's great to see you!!  Now get your rear off the couch.   Is there an RWB chapter nearby you can connect with?  That might give you some incentive to get out there, and of course signing up for a race is, you know, kind of a way to jump-start things.

DOOOOOO EEEEEET, Salty!  All of it.  Every epic race you contemplate.  (Chris, did you catch that "epic"? ) You know you want to.   Besides, your PCT run and all your trail running is so similar, you might as well.  And Iceland - how amazing would that be??  It'd give you some amazing IG pics for sure.

Losing training buddies sucks.  I swam with a friend every week for several years.  Then she had a baby and we only got together every few months.  Then she moved away.  Boooo!!  Swimming is a lot less fun when we can't chat before and after and push each other to get in all the laps.  I've done most of my running alone until recently when I joined a team.  I'm just getting to know people, but it's great to be able to post on our Facebook page that I'm going x miles at x pace and finding somebody to join me.  I'm running 4 days a week and this week, I'll be running with people 3 of those days.  Since I'm not working, the social contact is wonderful and desperately needed for an extrovert like me!!  Also, we have team workouts every week, which are a good way to meet people and find a pace group.

Laura, yay for signing up for a race!!  Go git 'em!!

Ben and Matt - you people are beasts, just beasts.  Gah.  Makes me tired just reading about your trainer rides.

I got nuthin' on the foot cadence sensor or supplement front.  Don't have a fcs and don't use supplements for training-related stuff.  I do tend to eat a protein bar (Clif Builder Bar, usually) after workouts, but that's it.

As for me, I'm just glad I'm doing so much running.  Lots of stoopid life stuff going on and the running is keeping me from dissolving into a puddle on the couch.  Plus I get to collect bad-azz points for getting out there when the weather is enough to keep sane people inside.  Now if I can just figure out what those bad-azz points can be used for other than bragging rights....

Oh yeah, as for Poptarts and coffee, I'm definitely on the pro side.  DH hooked me on both, darn his hide.  I've never had Nutella (can you believe it?!) but I love Justin's.  Plus they're local, which is just pretty faching cool.

Okey doke, that's my novel for the day.  Carry on, folks.  I'll be back in a day or so.

Great to see you Mary! I'm glad you're running

Lets see if I can get my butt back in gear and start training again. I was a Manatee back in 2013/13, then took a break from Triathlons/BT.

NAME: Jonathan

STORY: I recent left the U.S. Army after  6yrs, now looking for a job in SE Tennessee. I was very active in sports growing up but life has gotten in the way. In 2012 I ran my first Triathlon and Half-Mary, loved it. In 2013 I moved from Alaska to Tennessee and had trouble getting my butt back into gear for training. Deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 and did 3 Half-marys, several 5k and a couple 10k's on the little base. Had a flair up of Plantar Factitious (sp) in Sept 14 and have had trouble getting back motivated. I am now back up to about 245lbs from 205 and need to start getting back at it.

FAMILY STATUS: Single, have 3 kids ages 16, 13, 8 and a 3 y/o Alaskan Husky fur-kid.

CURRENT TRAINING: None, the couch keeps winning the fight.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: None

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Motivation/accountability to get my butt back in gear.

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: Just rejoining (if I can) for some of the old BT butt kicking this group is good for.

Great to see you Jonathan. Now stop reading and get up go for a run

Desert Rose! Icy Pop! PIKATTI!!!!!!!!!!

Thought about you and your pup lots. So happy to see you! {MELON PRESS}

Sometimes I hate summer in Australia.

Another massive bush fire this week. So far this one has destroyed almost 100 homes, totally wiped out one town and is heading for another one. It is still out of control and us contained. They don't know that they will be able to save the second town either. Praise The Lord that there has been no loss of life yet.

The first big one of the summer was in my home town. It destroyed massive amounts of farm land and crops, a number of homes and killed four people. The second one was on the east coast and it destroyed almost 120 houses.

If you are a Manatee that prays can you please pray for a change in weather for us. Pray that the thunder storms that are around our state don't just bring thunder and lightening but that they bring rain too, and enough of it to put the fires out.

Edit: just found out that there are 2 other large bush fires burning that have also destroyed homes in other ares.

WOW that's awful. This happens every year?? or is it a function of less rain?

Gosh--the pod is active today, or yesterday, or whatever the last 24 hours or so have been! (Currently in Hong Kong waiting to start last leg of World's Longest Commute. 16 hours of flying so far; trying to stay awake long enough to find out what gate my flight to Saigon leaves from and get over there before I crash. Still another 2:40 flying, immigration, luggage, and probably an hour or more of battling Airport Taxi Mafia and getting home. Ugh!)

Read Dyana Nyad's book about her marathon swim from Cuba to Florida on the plane here. Good read for a long flight. I remember she had tried the crossing the previous year but had no idea she actually had tried four times before succeeding at age 64. Talk about persistence!

You guys do know that Hammer makes Nutella-flavored gu?! It's called Nociolla (I think; something Italian-ish like that) and tastes pretty convincingly similar to Nutella. I've enjoyed it for some longer trainer rides, but personally would probably gag on it at race intensity. Bringing back a small stash in my checked luggage. (Hope there are no thieving triathletes out there tonight--they could score a power meter, six months worth of electrolyte tabs, and all my race nutrition, plus cat treats, a bike seat, several pairs of compression shorts, and a two-month supply of almonds, among other goodies.) Just had a terrible feeling I have left my hydration belt at home in Oregon.....HOPE I can score another one at the bike shop in Saigon, but that's never a given. Oh no!

Ben, thanks for the excellent nutrition overview.  For me, I only do something "special" when I get to the *really* long rides and runs during peak training.  I like to make a smoothy with frozen bananas and chocolate protein powder and a little milk as a recovery drink and also just to cool down.  For the longest time, I didn't use the protein powder for anything else.  Now I have a few overnight oatmeal recipes that call for it and I use it for them as well.

Stacey, so sorry that you are experiencing fires in your area.  Good weather thoughts are coming your way.

This happens every year?? or is it a function of less rain?

stay safe Stacey!
The fires are a good distance from us so we will be ok.

But yes every summer there is at least one massive brushfire in Australia, more likely 3 or four. High alert and edginess normally starts around October and goes through till late March early April. Thankfully this year the 3 big ones have been started by lightening rather than deliberately lit, which is often the case.

Sadly my only supplements are M&M's and Gummy Bears. One bad habit I'm trying to work on this year.

LOL!

The  thing I take consistently -or try to/am supposed to, is calcium and vitamin D.  I take that in a yummy chocolate flavored chew.  As a slightly built, white woman with a family history of osteoporosis I take the chew in an attempt to keep my bones strong.  I hoped that all the running I do would be enough, but, alas, it is not.

Also, I am a vegetarian, so when I make smoothies (which I haven't done in a long time, but really need to get back to!) I will sometimes add protein powder if I feel I'm a little behind in the protein department.

Wow, that's scary! I hope the area gets some nice rain without lightening!

M&Ms = Vitamin C!

Doctors say that a more colorful diet is better for you. At least that's what I've heard.

There are a lot of M&M types now too. Plain and peanut, but also almonds, dark chocolate, mint, crispy, peanut butter, pretzel, mega to name some.

Hey chatty pod-mates!

So glad I registered for my race yesterday...it sold out two hours ago! Guess a lot of people made a resolution to do this race. As we've all said, its pretty impossible to fully keep up with this thread, but here's my thoughts/updates:

I really like Nutella, and the idea that Hammer makes a nutella-esque flavor is more than enough motivation to begin ramping up my running so I get to eat that and call it "fuel."

Someone...Mary? Stacey? Randee?...asked how my running and biking were going:
My running is going well. A few weeks ago I graduated from run/walk to all run, and I'm at about 16 minutes now. I'm going to build up nice and slow and pay attention to form and such to build a nice strong base. And I love running in winter, so all smiles there.
Biking...I didn't bike as a kid, so it has always been my nemesis. Just read through old race reports and you can see I was never a fan. I got a city bike this summer and started biking to the market on the weekends, and that has helped a lot with confidence. I'm going to slap some platform pedals on my old roadie come spring and get out there. I think before my issue was trying to be "hardcore" or whatever and going clipless before I even knew how to steer.
My overall goal for this comeback has been to take everything really slow, enjoy my training, and really pay attention to basics. So far, it worked out well with swimming, so I'm excited to see how biking and running come along.

Stacey, so sorry about all this fire business. I hope the loss of live for all stays at 0.

My Aunt B is still in hospital, but has been moved to a regular room. She's able to take solid food now, and been able to go to the bathroom, so that's really excellent. The infections are still present, so that is quite concerning. She's also continuing to lose weight, so we're now looking at 42 pounds lost in 7 weeks, and signs of that having an impact on her liver function. Please keep her in your thoughts.

"What do you think about running an ultra in Iceland?"

I've kind of been avoiding ultra distances (at least racing) buuuut, it might be a pretty epic way to do my first.

Aaaaahhhhh, how EPIC (Chris) would that be?!  DOOOOOO EEEEIIIIIIITTTT!!!!

Finished Revolver during lunch, and I will say again that doing that video twice in a row at 100% is im-freaking-possible.  I'm beginning to doubt that doing it twice at 90% is doable.  For me that would be 32 1 minute intervals at 295W.  That's a lot of ouch for a 243W guy.

So just over 120% for the intervals? Yeah, that felt possible earlier in the year too. Had thought about giving it a try, but wanted to get some other work in that day, so only did the one. I don't do this one all that often as I usually don't pick up as much from it. It's nice to build into working that hard again, but have made better gains with some shorter and more tightly spaced intervals and also with some a few minutes long. That one crazy hard session was all over 450.

The 100% TR targets for me is 328W, which is 135%.  It's insanely hard, but I'm actually impressed with how quickly I bounced back from it.  Life sucked for about 10 minutes after the workout, and then I was OK.  Probably could do something light in the afternoon, but I'll take my off time until Saturday that the plan gives me.

Definitely some solid work! Think it took me near 10 minutes to regain the energy to unclip and then lay down on the floor. No part of that is an exaggeration.

You guys are both impressive and crazy, in a good way!  Wow.

haha, thanks everyone! I'll stick to the whey protein making sure to mix in a variety of M&M's to keep my diet colorful. If only they sold Smarties down here. I know the Canadians on here know what I'm talking about

US Smarties != Canada Smarties, two completely different animals.  One of my Canadian teammates occasionally makes us Smartie cookies for post-game snacks.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
