The swim today was horrible. NOAA was calling for waves less than 6 inches. Reality was 3 ft breaking surf. The RD gave us several options including if you try the swim, you can scratch and then do the bike and run legs, no official time. Instead of dropping down to the sprint or doing the DU I ended up taking the scratch and doing the bike and run. Not 8 strokes into the swim I was slammed by a breaking wave and took a mouth full of water. I started vomiting. That's an interesting experience in breaking surf.. I couldn't calm down after that and made it about 500 yards and decided it was a bad idea to keep swimming.

I was really happy with my bike. I wanted to implement my plan for my IM for nutrition, hydration and cadence. Everything worked the way I hoped. I didn't have a drop in energy and took in enough fluids that I never felt thirsty and actually had to go to the bathroom 3 times. I've never done that during this event. The ride itself was overall good. The last 14 miles we had 20 mph head winds. I was about 3 mph slower than I normally am on this portion of the ride.

I did a 4/1 run/walk on the run leg. It worked really well. It was mentally difficult for me to walk after running the first 4 minutes, but I stuck with it. About halfway through the run I started seeing the payoff and especially in the last 3 miles. I started passing a lot of the people who breezed past me in the beginning of the run. At the end of the run, I felt great and my legs felt strong. I ran the last 3 miles at a faster pace than I ever averaged on the race.

Overall, I am pleased with my day. It would been nice if the weather had cooperated, but you can't get yanked over things you have no control over. Besides, my wife would kill me if a drowned. haha.

So sorry Robin.  I totally understand the bolded part above.  I call mine my forever dog--the one that will be with me forever.  I am glad that you were both able to be with her, and that she knew.  I've no doubt that she knew the love you have for her and that it gave her peace.

Well, the first leg sounds atrocious, but sounds like you did great with the other two.  Congrats!

I think you made the right decision. Surf break can be dangerous or even deadly, particularly if you aren't used to dealing with it (as are surfers) and don't instinctively know the proper technique for getting in and out of it. I have bruised an entire side of my body, and probably cracked some ribs, trying to get out of the break after an OWS in Hawaii. Have also pulled out of one ocean swim here when I thought it was just too rough, and the safety setup too minimal, for me to handle safely, even though I'm a pretty strong swimmer.

That was actually my initial fear at Worlds--there had been a couple of days of stormy weather before I arrived, and the break up until race day was averaging 1- 2 meters and occasionally even higher. Way, way beyond my comfort zone. I actually was never able to get out to swim, nor had I ever swum in the ocean in a full wetsuit, until race day. I think to some extent I was so relieved that the swim went okay and surf was manageable that I may not have pushed it hard enough! I had visions of everyone else stroking confidently out past the break for the deep water start and me stuck there, paralyzed by fear, on the shore, or making it out there and then breaking my arms or neck trying to get to shore while being pushed by a huge breaking wave. Compared to that, the bike fiasco was pretty minor on the list of tri nightmares.

It sounds like you had a solid race despite very challenging conditions.

its too bad about the swim but at least you were given options, Sounds like that new bike worked well and the run/walk strategy paid off as too. Nice job.

Looks like you made the right call getting out of that water! Nice rid and run and keeping up with the nutrition and hydration.

I am glad your wife did not have to commit homicide

Thanks for all your kind words. It is hard but she didn't hurt and she calmed down when I held her and she just slowly passed.

I did my first every gravel race today. I did the 20 mile option rather than the 40 or 60 milers. I had a good time, the venue was fantastically beautiful and I am pretty sure I was not last. I even finished before those zoomy 40 and 60 milers finished.

I'm pretty sure vomiting in the water would be my cue to exit stage right as well. Nice work on the bike and run!

I tried three new things this week and loved them for race day. 1. Wet wipes, 2 Gum and 3 pickles. I was told on another thread about the wet wipes and gum. I loved them both. They gave me that little bit of a human feeling. I was able to get the salt off of my face and clean the sticky off of my hands. The gum got rid of the fuzzy on my teeth from sports drink and slimy sugar and just freshened my mouth.
I tried a pickle on a whim during the run. It tasted great had a good salty taste, cleaned my mouth and didn't come back.

Wet wipes - I don't leave home without them! I also carry small rolls of TP in case the port-a-litter-boxes run out.

I got back in the pool this morning for the first time since the start of the year. I'm happy to report that I survived but Oh My Goodness!!! I don't know that you can call what I was doing swimming - it was more like not drowning.

The really sad thing is that my brain can still remember what it felt like to really be able to swim and it is just very very frustrating to no longer be able to swim like that. I have some major work to do in the next 10 weeks to be able to nail the swim at the first tri for the summer.

On a positive note the Garmin 735 worked really well, It counted an extra 25m but to be fair I was standing there flapping my arms about so its probably fair. I need to do a bit more reading regarding which button to press (so back to DC rainmaker for the ins and outs).

    Go racers!!!!

i am sorta kinda racing tomorrow. There are gravel races at the Biltmore Estate and duathalon. I am doing the 20 mile gravel race... as a ride. This fat bottomed girl who makes the world go round will be last. (Thanks Poo!).

I am lucky with my hubbie being supportive for training, and he is a great cook. I, too am banned from the kitchen while he is cooking. He doesn't play well with others. Or..... I may be a tad annoying.

I love the Fend For Yourself idea

Judi (QueenZipp) mentioned that she had an event this weekend. Pretty cool stuff:

You guys were busy this weekend!

Salty, I hope that you had fun on you PCT adventure!  It sounds like your new team matches up well with your personal feelings about the mountains and that is pure awesomeness!

Mary and Salty - Hopefully the car woes are behind you!

Karen - So many races, so little time!  Honestly, I thought that Alp D’Huez was your kinda sorta event for next year but I understand, it’s not as much fun to race alone.  The races in China + possible Kona slot do sound interesting, less the PitA factor.  I’ll throw out one other thought — Challenge Roth — although it sounds like you’ve maybe settled on China which I think is an excellent choice :-D

    TJ - STVI?

    Robin NC - Please accept my condolences. {{hugs}}

Dave - I’m glad that the Tough Mudder was fun and that you accomplished your #1 objective of not hurting yourself!

Jim - I’m glad that the HIM bike and run portion went according to plan.  I’m pretty sure that you won’t have to deal with 3 foot waves at IM Lou!

Robin NC - It’s great that you were able to get out and enjoy Biltmore yesterday!  How’d DH do?

Judi - Thank you for doing the stair 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

Jim and Robin - I use the Always To Go Wipes instead of TP. They are individually wrapped so that you can put them in your bento box or race belt just in case.  I have put a wash clot in T1/T2 bags.  I either get it damp and put it in a zip lock or water available depending on the transition setup.

Stacey - I’m glad that the 735XT is working well for you!

The gum got rid of the fuzzy on my teeth from sports drink and slimy sugar and just freshened my mouth.
I tried a pickle on a whim during the run. It tasted great had a good salty taste, cleaned my mouth and didn't come back.

Good morning everyone. Sounds like a lot of us had busy weekends! I look forward to reading some race reports this afternoon. A pickle on the run?? That's a new one. Did you leave it in a ziplock and run with it until you felt like it?

    real training question below.

I am doing okay on my 50k training plan but ran into a snag this past weekend. I was scheduled to do my longest run of 40km but also had the toughmudder thing. For the tough mudder I ran it (20km) mostly up and down hills which in my mind made it a decent workout. My intention was to do the 40km run the next day. This didnt happen - The copious number of bruises, scrapes and using muscles which havent been used for a while took a little (a LOT!) out of me and I was pretty sore when I woke up Sunday - I did a trail run late on the Sunday in the hopes that things would loosen up as I went. It really didnt and I only ran 13km before deciding that I needed the rest more than suffering though a long run. Looking ahead to my next weekend I have a 32km run followed by an 8km the next day - Should I instead substitute in that 40km run that I missed?

At this point I can crank out the 30km to 35km runs no problem but at 40km/+ I am still in unknown territory. Is it worth doing a 40km run 2 weeks out from my 50km race?

My longest run before my 50k was 26 miles, but it was 3 weeks out from the 50k (ended up being a month because I got sick but that's another topic).  If it were me I think I'd try to do the 40 this weekend then do a two week taper.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
