Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That sounds like the 32 hour weight workout I logged on BT last year. Talk about blowing up one's training graph. You'd think I'd be a bit more ripped after all that strength training! BTW The Italian biking videos--Some of those rides look like they are on roads but part of them are actually on an awesome dedicated bike path network. The trail is as wide as a two lane road, even wider in some places. There is an extensive "bike interstate" all over the Dolomites, near the borders of Italy/Austria/Slovenia, and it connects to trails stretching south to Bolzano, Verona, and possibly further, as well as up to the Swiss border via Merano and the Val Venosta. You can ride for hours, even days, and hardly ever go on a road, which, given the topography in those areas, is a really good thing. The last time we were in the Bolzano area, I was riding with my mom from the Swiss border down to Merano and we got passed in the opposite direction by a woman on a tri bike who looked eerily like me. (I don't have Italian ancestry but have been told by a lot of people that I look Italian.) She was headed up toward Switzerland, flying along on some fancy bike, jamming to her iPod, with an "Ironman Austria" jersey. When I'm bored on the trainer, I stare at the scenery and imagine that I am her (or she is me?), on that trail, having the ride of my life. I guess I have a good imagination. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by emcmino Originally posted by IronOx I have tried deep water running, and have a pool access that is plenty deep. I have just heard it is good to keep fitness, not build it. Does any have thoughts on that? Originally posted by emcmino Originally posted by jmkizer I do have access to one of those stair steppers, but have never used it. Maybe I will give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion. Originally posted by emcmino My main issue will be the running since I am only really allowed to run once a week. I am hoping to do some of the easy run workouts on an elliptical or stair climber or something else. I know an elliptical is not the same as running, but at least it is something. Good Luck Racing Manatee's this weekend!!! When my running has been limited, two things have been recommended to me. The evil stair stepper (the one that looks like a flight of neverending stairs) and deep water running. I second deep water running. It is boring as heck, but it is really good for keeping up run fitness. I'm thinking these can bring in different things. I've never really done deep water running so unsure how that would compare to the elliptical. Thinking to use both of those. I don't know if the stair climber really adds anything. Are you able to ride your bike? Trainer or stationary? I'd rather do hard workouts on that as it's more applicable to something you're doing. The elliptical will still be body weight supporting even though it doesn't have the eccentric loading (none of these have that). You can work at a much higher cadence, very much like your run cadence will be, instead of plodding along. I've been on the elliptical a fair amount the past while here with the injury. Haven't used the arms much at all when trying to get a workout in. They're often in the wrong spot for body position and balancing as compared to running, so just skip that and lightly hold the stationary center handles. More of a reference point to help keep your balance as opposed to having a strong supporting grip on it. The elliptical pedals can really seem to float on some of them. Not quite as big on the angle of the stairs either. They get so steep that it gets away from the running motion a bit much even though you could beat yourself up pretty well. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you for the responses re trainer training and motivation. I am currently just listen to hard house and trance and using a hr monitor to work in zones but was finding it boring as there was no mental stimulation to keep me engaged. I have just done some searching on youtube for trainer videos and will give them a go as it looks like they do you session for you as I have very limited experience so was just making it up as I went along or trying to follow a plan I had picked up on line. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A lot of people on BT use the Sufferfest videos--you can purchase them to download or as CD's. I think I've only done one (got it as a sample or something) but I know they are popular. There is also Jorge's bike program (free on this site, at least I think it's still free). Or just random videos online. If the latter, you want to make sure you're getting a good mix of different durations and intensities. That will depend on your race goals. I was just searching around on Youtube and there are actually some bike videos up to four hours long. The quality really varies, though. Some are not stabilized and would give me vertigo even riding the trainer! I even found an hour-long video of biking in Oregon--not the part I'm from but similar scenery. Will have to use that next time I'm feeling homesick. I really should get a GoPro and tape my favorite rides and bike tours to enjoy later on the trainer, but haven't shelled out the cash yet. Was going to do that at the end of 2014--I walked into a bike shop to buy a GoPro to record my upcoming tour in Sri Lanka, and somehow came out with a secondhand Cervelo, but no GoPro. Afraid to go that shop again. |

Hmmm....We did this in several different trips. We bought maps locally in Bolzano and Merano for DIY rides in the area. From Merano up to the Swiss border, the path is integrated with a narrow-gauge train system. Most people get a kind of day pass, and with that at most stops you can rent bikes, take them on/off the train, and return rental bikes. We were riding on some of the Dolomites trails (and could see that the network was much more extensive than what we actually rode) on a tour offered by Bike Tours Direct called "Dolomites to Trieste". (The site is great for DIY tour ideas.) We did the Bolzano to Verona ride on "liberated" Bolzano city bikes. (Most people borrow them for a few hours; we did for several days!) I think I was using the basic route from another of Bike Tours Direct's rides. Within Austria and Germany, and probably Switzerland, you can buy books with maps of various alpine routes and bike trails in most bookstores, bike shops, and train stations. I think they are called Fahrradkarte. Some of the most popular routes are also printed in English; Mom and I know enough basic German to get ourselves lost. Not sure what is available online. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Opps. I sold my road bike! I just got it last year and did like it but it was time for something different and more suitable for what I need a "road bike" to do. I have to do more research but I am leaning heavily towards a Kona Jake. This will be the perfect bike for my spring off road race and with road tires and perhaps a different stem will still be decent on the road. It will also give me access to a lot of rail trails in my area. I had to look it up but my last "road" triathlon was in 2011! Picture isnt mine but its what I am looking at. -Gooooo racers! Ann-Marie you are killin' it! Woot woot -Speaking of Twin Peaks, I have started watching. It's the music that really gets me! It adds this whole weird mysterious dimension. Also, I mean...I kind of have to. A whole lot of it was filmed here, in fact this is a little stop on the way too and from my trail runs/ski/etc -Aqua jogging is a great running sub, as everyone said. Cross Country skiing is an amazingly similar (yet low impact) workout to running as well. The stair stepper is a kickazz workout. Maybe not a running simulation but it's a good suppliment. Then of course biking as you can get a lot of aerobic in, low-impact and of course it is tri specific and accessible. -Kirsten, I have a hard time in the winter when it's so dark in the am. I've got this quote in my training log that I think about every time that alarm goes off for me to take off on one of my adventures or a workout and I don't quite feel like it, "10,000 hours is roughly what it takes to become exceptional in our practice. 10,000 hours does not happen when we choose to sleep in, when we let our jobs take over our schedule, or when we give in to someone's opinion that our craft isn't important. A high degree of grit enables one to make it fit, no matter what." I just think of the word grit, sometimes repeating it. We can't really control the amount of natural talent we bring to the table but we have full control about that grit. I aim to be gritty as f*** I think you are succeeding. I sometimes struggle with when to take that extra day off because my body needs it vs taking the day off cause my brain convinces me I need it. This week I think it was mostly the right decision. I do like that quote though, especially the job taking over the schedule part. Still to improve on that part! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey, what training plan would you recommend to a friend just beginning triathlon? I have a couple friends that want to try a sprint (300y/12 mi/5k) at the start of May. I know how I would prep for myself, but I probably shouldn't write a training plan for them. Any ideas? |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So was going to do a last long run before my half on Saturday and woke up with a sore throat. Hope it's just allergies. With the temperatures here going up and down like a Yo-Yo and a constant nasty wind it might just be that. Will see if it clears up later so I can still run. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cheers, this was the part I wrote:Thanks. Had a look at the tour company. They don't quite give enough detail that I wanted plus I wanted something that showed the entire network. I'll keep looking when I get a day off for an online source. I'm currently using the strava route building software. It's ok, but has its flaws. I haven't opted to buy the guide books yet is because they can be quite cost prohibitive when you're planning a route covering nearly 2400 miles. I'm going to have to keep my money back for the wilder areas ( Bulgaria, Slovenia, Bosnia etc). Edited by Richardsdrr 2016-01-31 3:35 PM |

![]() | ![]() Hope to join the group! NAME: Chris STORY: Well, have been really interested in doing a tri. Have always been active and have done a few 5k's, but always loved swimming and biking so I figured why not put them all together? FAMILY STATUS: Been happily married for 12 years to an unbelievably amazing wife and have 3 awesome kids and a dog. CURRENT TRAINING: Been doing some cardio and weight training but nothing serious...just haven't had that motivating push yet....that's where this group comes in, hopefully! THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Nothing planned yet, but hope to soon. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: First, would like to drop about 15 lbs, then again back the tone and mass I once had 25 years ago. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: I believe I could help others as I am being helped. And hopefully give others that extra push on those "Not-so-good" days. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Maybe this link will be useful-- I think you can download maps as well as GPS directions for the whole network, at least the part within Sudtirol Province in northern Italy. Not sure if that is in the right part of the Alps for you or not. I think we used some of these maps last time we were in Bolzabo. On previous trips, it probably wasn't up yet online. http://www.suedtirolbike.it/cycle-tracks-routes/cycle-path-network-... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My training was blown to pieces this weekend and it looks like things will be tricky hopefully for just the next couple of weeks. I am having elderly parent issues, and it all came to a head on Thursday night. My 80 year old Mom is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's, and my 83 year old father finally admitted he can't do it any longer. He is an Ironman, the weekends we went down to help were exhausting. I really don't know how he did it 24-7. We have had in home care for a couple of years, plus my brother and I have been helping, but the disease has progressed to the point that it is no longer safe to have her in the home and she needs 24 hour nursing care. It was a devastating admission for my Dad to make. I live 3.5 hours from them and my wife is a marketing director for a nursing home. We are going to move him into our house and she is going into my wife's facility. We spent the weekend preparing a room for him and preparing for construction. We are also going to have to build him a bathroom. He comes with his own medical issues. |
