Yeah, there's no real magic hear. It's mostly personal. How much you actually want/need to consume and what can you tolerate while running long distances. None of those products branded as specific to running really have anything special. They are usually easily digestible sugary empty carbs.

Go Janyne, Laura and Adam.

Get better Jen

My run is more of a training run. K and I are driving 300 miles today to meet my Mum and E (who are also driving 300miles from a different start point). Mum and E were lamenting that there are very few races where they live and none that give bling and E kinda got hooked when she came up and run with K and I a couple of weeks ago. It's a long week end here so we are all going for a little drive to get some run bling

Thanks for all of the nutrition advice everyone I really appreciate it.

For my marathon I am planning on using gels, I used them last year in my half without any problems. They haven't released details of what brand they will have on course yet as the race is still over 12 weeks away, but last year they were Gu. At this stage I'm aiming for a 5:30 finish time (yes I'm that slow) so I will definitely need something.

Mum, K and E are doing the half. E will probably finish around or under the 2 hour mark so she will possibly be fine. But mum and K will probably be out there for around 3 hours so they definitely will need something to keep them going. I want to do as much as I can for K to have a good run when she does this because if she doesn't she will pull the plug on her goal of doing the Disney Dopey Challenge and you would not believe the difference that having this goal is making to her life.

Have a wonderful weekend.

I have found with my 910 that if I swim slower it will give me extra laps, but if I speed up it is usually right on. Were you pushing off the wall hard enough, because that is what it uses to determine laps.

Think I push off the wall pretty hard and don't think I did anything differently from the norm, but maybe I had a wimpy one on each of the shorted sets!  Now I have 2 things to think about next swim - hit wall with my left hand and no wimpy push offs!  Thanks!!

I don't really know much of anything about the watch, but it's sounding like an accelerometer thing. It'll need a fairly quick change in speed in a straight line. Such as ... hitting a wall. Though since acceleration is change in speed, fast to slow or slow to fast, the push-off should do it too, and is probably where they try to have it do that for flip turns. The strokes tend to move in various loops, hence the straight line earlier.

I wonder if the extra laps coming in on slower swimming come from taking a longer time in the turn? First the hand touch and then the push-off? Maybe an extra arm flail to bring the body around. Something changing in the movement is doing that.

I used to get extra laps on the 910 if someone swam across my lane causing me to stutter on my stroke. I wasn't complaining though, I needed all the help I could get.

I worked Bike Aid Station 2 at IM Raleigh 70.3 this morning and I saw Adam go though.  He was looking good!

I just got home and checked.  It looks like he finished the swim and bike part in just under four hours.  He's heading to the check point at mile 6.6 on the run.  Go Adam!

It's in the 80s today but super humid.  The RealFeel right now is 90.

Gj Adamn as well as the other racers.

For a quickish update from me, I've finally solidified what will be my first race of any sort this year.  I will be racing the Ella Strong Triathlon on June 25, which is a sprint, but it will challenge me plenty.

The distances are 300m swim, 10 mile bike, and a 5k.  I've been biking occasionally, but my swim is nonexistent and my run hasn't been much better this year.  The swim I can get ready for via a few lunch swims I think.  The run however will be the big obstacle for me.  When I raced triathlon I weighed 150-155 lbs, and I now bounce between 175-180.  While most of that weight is from my lifting, that weight can and will slow me down.  Currently my plan is to get as many 3 mile runs in as I can at a relatively easy pace.

I started this approach since last Wednesday, and it seems like 3 miles is my sweet spot of not too far to wear me out for the next day while being long enough to feel like I've done something.  It will be interesting to see how I do come race day.

Congrats Adam!  Reports on other racing pod-mates?  Just back on-the-line after heading to Boston for the weekend for an old friend's wedding, so I'm catching up!

I use gels for races.  For HM, I'll take two on course and only sometimes use both.  First goes down about 45' to 1 hour in.  Whether I take the next one depends on both how I feel ~45' later and how close I am to finishing.  I don't usually take within 10' of the finish line, and from 10-20' out will go by feel (sucky? I'm downing one.  Bouncy stride?  Prolly not).  I also try to take them right before a water stop and wash down with water.  Historically have used GU when given the chance (as in carrying my own).

For longer courses (M or HIM - as long as I've gone), I like to at least try to use what's on course in my training so I know that if I drop my gels, I can live off the course.  Hammer is about the only thing that sets me to absolutely gagging, but otherwise I'm lucky in being able to tolerate most stuff.  For an HIM (not the original question, I know), I also add ~half strength Skratch as my drink, so that's a few more calories.

I don't do flip turns (at least not intentionally).  They make me completely nauseated.  Not sure why, but there you have it.  Don't feel I'm missing much, though, as I don't race in pools.  Would be nice not to get dirty looks from the "real" swimmers in the other lanes, but my honkin' 920 and inability to swim anything but freestyle without worrying the lifeguards give me away anyway!  Also, as I apparently cannot count beyond 2 in the pool, that watch saves me...

As for watch, yep - the 920 is what I use.  It nails laps (whereas my 910 used to add 25 every so often - same thing, if I hitched or something).  The bummer is that the 910 used to NAIL OWS's for yardage, but the 920 reeeeeeeaaaaalllllly struggles (like 2/3 of a known distance kind of miss).  Argh...

OK - running back to work!

M

Hey Manatees I had a good race and an even better time with my Mum, K and E and we all beat our goal times which was good.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
