1731 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Originally posted by BlueBoy26 Originally posted by mtnbikerchk What plan are you using? I don't think I ever did a brick longer than 40 minutes or 4 miles while IM training. Especially on your first I would consider a different plan before saying that you would not do well at a full based on 1 day a week. I would really evaluate the whole plan. For my first, my longest stand alone run was 14 miles. I'm not saying that's ideal but there are many ways to conquer and IM! I am loosely following the Triforce "A Sub 10 Ironman in 10 Hours Per Week (2019)" plan. I am currently doing the following: - Monday: 1-hr TrainerRoads Bike intervals + 25min Brick Run - Tuesday: 90-minute run - Wednesday: 3,000-4,000 yd swim + afternoon 25min recovery Run (Optional) - Thursday: 90-minute TrainerRoads Endurance Ride + afternoon 25min recovery Run (Optional) - Friday: 3,000-4,000 yd swim - Saturday: 3 Hour bike (indoor or outdoor) + 1-hour Brick run - Sunday: REST I am trying to tweak things so that I get more running in. I am solid on my Tuesday morning long run, but everything else is hit and miss which I don't like. Running has changed from three 1-hour runs to a 90-minute run and 1-2 25-minute runs. The Swims have been awesome. I have been averaging about 800 yds a week for the past 4 years and now am averaging 5,000 yards a week for the past 10 weeks. My biggest fear for a full Ironman is the swim so my focus has really been to get to where I can do a 2.4 mile swim without struggling. The Bike has been an improvement too. I was doing two 60-min TrainerRoads bike rides then a 90-min to 2-hour long ride so bike volume has gone from 3.5 - 4.0 hours a week to 5-1/2 hours. Total Volume has changed from 7-1/2 hours to 10 hours. So not a huge increase but enough that I should see some additional training benefits. This is not the plan I would probably choose for my first IM race. It is just the one that I choose based on time constraints to see if I could complete an entire IM training plan. IM Texas is October 9th and IM Waco is October 23rds so I am kind of aiming to peak around that time frame but am writing the plan one week at a time based on what I learn each week. Thanks for sharing the training plan and your own experience. I notice in the plan there are two days for swimming, with a third one as optional. And you do two days as well. Is that enough...? I am nowhere close to IM training or racing, it's my long-term goal, but just looking into options and opinions. |

Master 4119 Toronto | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Thanks so much everyone!! <3 It was kind of a crazy day conditions-wise. Originally it looked like the swim might be cancelled with thunderstorms predicted in the morning but the forecast had changed and that moved to later in the day. Swim was good. I swam wide of the buoys on the one side and definitely added distance i didn't need to. I got out on the bike and within 10 minutes it was raining and then it was pouring rain with thunder and lightning. That lasted until just before the half way mark. I was really glad i had tri bike shoes as i could feel the water running out of them. So wet. Then the sun and heat decided to come out - and by the time i got back to start running it was well over 30C (86F) with a full, blazing sun and a run course that is very hilly. I started running right out of transition and made it up the first two hills but it was so hot and i was already feeling it so i decided to mostly walk the uphills and aid stations. I ran in the last km or so and i could feel my quads wanting to lock up. I am so happy i got to do this! I definitely have lots of room to improve and won't belly ache about my time because i did what i could with the changing race options - i started and stopped training 3 times. |

297 | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Kind of a hectic weekend here. My wife was notified Thursday night that she was a "close contact" with a student of hers that came up positive for COVID. She started masking up at home and I slept on the couch just in case. Our schools are 'no mask mandates' for students or staff, but she wears one all day anyway and is vaccinated. She is at a very small school though and her entire staff masks. Hardly any students do though. I think they have about 80-90 students in the school and everyone is considered a 'close contact' because of the layout of the school, it is that small. If you are vaccinated, you can keep coming masked but need to test for up to 5 days I think. If you are unvaccinated, you have stay home for 5 days I think. They had to call all parents Thursday night. On Friday they only had 14 kids at school because our vax rates are so low here. She was there Frriday and masked and tested negative. Saturday she woke up and said she was simply exhausted. It got worse over the weekend, and she was essentially quarantined in the bedroom. She's been coughing, chest hurts, earache, exhaustion. She's now at a local clinic to get tested, which is essentially a parking lot of people apparently. The numbers are rapidly going up here. My bet is she is positive. Kids and I are fine, no issues whatsoever so far. Took my son on Saturday to our local trails to mountain bike. We have been there a lot in the winter for cross-country skiing. He heard there was a 'single track' and wanted to try it. He loved it. I hated it. I liked the main trails, but moving slow through the woods and over tree roots was not my cup of tea. I felt bad because I think he'd like to do it more, but I probably wouldn't be the one going with him. I took him golfing Sunday though and we had a great day there. Working from home this week in the event I did catch something and am asymptomatic, I just don't want to pass on to co-workers. It sucks to see no end in sight to this mess that most of us seem to not really be concerned about until it actually hits their house. |

I notice in the plan there are two days for swimming, with a third one as optional. And you do two days as well. Is that enough...? I am nowhere close to IM training or racing, it's my long-term goal, but just looking into options and opinions. I changed things up on the long Saturday workout this weekend. Instead of doing 3 hours on the bike and then trying to do an hour on the run when I was hot, I got out early and did some running before the bike ride while I was still waiting for the sun to come up. So I did 20 minutes running 2-1/2 hours biking, 40 minutes running. It was a cool day which also helped, but I made it through 3-1/2 hours instead of tapping out at 3-1/4. So I will call that progress. I also double my calories on the bike which may have been what I was missing too. When I was training for my first triathlon I was swimming about 4 days a week (sometimes all 5) over my lunch break from work. I only had a total of 17 minutes that I could swim after the commute to the gym and changing, etc. I did well on the swim and it took me 5 years to break my swim time PR. So swimming frequency seemed to do better for me than doing fewer longer swims. As our workforce was reduced I got too busy to leave the office every day so my swims dropped from 3-5 days a week to 1-2 days a week. Two days was better than one but at 17-minute sessions my swim endurance sucked. I could get through a sprint just, but the Olympic swims were a bit long for me. So...swimming two days a week before work when I can put in 1+-hour is helping a lot. I girl in our local Tri Club does about 4 swims a week that are 3,000-4,000 yds long. She is my hero. I think with that type of swim program I would make real progress in the water. I like running too much to give up all my run time to swimming through so two swims a week is enough for me.
