(For Marysia) No, have never used Base Salts or similar products. My coach suggested I try them for Vietnam 70.3, but I didn't as I was unable to find it locally in Oregon (I think as it's normally so cool that people don't need such things, even in summer here), in Saigon, or, oddly, Singapore. So all my tropical races have been without any sodium supplementation. What I rely on is a combination of sports drink (Nuun has one of the highest concentrations of sodium among the various drinks, and is sugar-free and has a very light taste so you can get a lot of it down), gels with sodium (Power Bar tangerine and a couple of their other flavors have 200 mg of sodium per packet), and (only for HIM and long rides) rolling my bike chocolate in sea salt. So I would say that using a dedicated product like Base Salt is not essential, even in pretty extreme conditions; you do need to pay attention to balancing fluid and electrolyte intake, though. That could be done with drinks, gels, natural foods, or other DIY solutions.

I've personally never had serious issues like cramping, vomiting, etc. that are typical of sodium depletion in a race. May have had a few problems in the last miles of this year's IM Vietnam, but that was really due to drinking more water than normal to keep cool (as the aid stations didn't have ice) and not balancing it with additional gu or electrolytes. The symptoms (light-headedness ,tingling in hands, some nausea after finishing) resolved after I drank some more concentrated electrolyte drink. Also possible it could have been due to overheating or low blood sugar (I tend to under-fuel a bit in hot conditions), not a sodium issue at all, and was actually resolved by stopping, cooling, and taking in some calories.

Others' needs may vary. I sweat a lot, and need a lot of hydration for someone my size, at least in tropical conditions, but am not a very salty sweater. That is probably to come extent an adaptation to training in those conditions most of the year for several years. You really need to experiment in training to find out what works for you.

Still pondering Orlando.  Struggling to accept the labels and categories we put ourselves into.  Gay, lesbian, queer, straight, asexual.  Muslim, Christian, Hindi, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh.   Love who you want to, worship how you want to.   I don't have to stop you from doing yours to have mine.  A friend has recently come out as transgendered.  I asked her wife if they are staying together, as she married a man.  "I don't know for sure" she says "but I didn't fall in love with a gender, I fell in love with the person".   Brilliant.

To quote Depeche Mode "I can't understand what makes a man hate another man, help me understand."

The side of the foot sounds like what I get after a few hours in the saddle. I think it's from where I don't push down with a flat foot but push with the outer edge of my foot instead. I was wondering if I should try and put a shim or a washer on the outer cleat bolts. I get it more on my spd sl than my spd pedals. I tend to walk Charlie Chaplin-esque, so perhaps that is causing me to lean more on the outer edge of my feet.Perhaps you should change your signature to "Not so happy feet".

I was planning on going on a 250 mile ride yesterday to test a few things but, as some of you are aware, I had the sad news that my Father passed away. Having really been able to do much for the past 36 hours. Decided to occupy myself with repacking my bike and to do a few adjustments to take my mind off things. I don't think I've posted a pic of my Transcontinental bike packed yet. There's a couple of things I need to change but it's pretty much ready now.

Great Job, Salty!!!!

Darren, to echo everyone's comments, I'm very sorry for your loss. That looks like quite the bike setup. What kind of seat is that? Are you planning on tent camping? I can't tell if that's a tent or dry bag on the back. I love camping but unfortunately those days are few and far between and generally entail my motorcycle, not a bicycle. That's too hardcore for me!

I haven't posted much about this, as it's still kind of tough for me and mine, and I try to keep my on-the-line stuff more thoughtful than reactive, but I really loved the above (so, thank you for it).

Brother, son, aunt... whatever - we love them for the people they are, not which "definitional sliver" might describe them (but never fully can - how do you put the whole of a person into any set of words... Even as an English major, that's way too limiting).

Matt

ETA an extra "o" so that no one wonders if I really can speak English...

That's a dry bag on the back with a down jacket and dry sleeping clothes/spare clothes/warm clothes etc. Up front attached to the aero bars is another dry bag with my sleeping system, which consists off a mat, bivvy bag and a tarp. The saddle is a Selle SMP X Ray. Had to get it because it matched the colour scheme :D

Thank you everyone for your condolences.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
