Hope the holiday weekend went well, and good luck with getting the training re-started! Tom, my heart goes out to the families and friends who lost someone to that senseless act of violence. Yanti, feel better, lady! Awesome jobs on your races, Stacey, Jim and Tom! Yay PR's!! Dave, liking the frame color. Can't wait to see the finished product! I've been really busy enjoying the company of my oldest child who's been away for college, and starting life post college, for the past 8 years. The reunion with her siblings was the sweetest thing I have ever seen. I've still be running and doing Crossfit. Stuff that she can do with me. I'm not wanting to spend too much time away from the family while she is visiting. STILL haven't been swimming. Arrrgh. Pinky promise as soon as my daughter leaves to return to FL. I'll need the water to hide my tears. Hope you're all having a good start to your week! I have my swim gear with me today. I'm with you. haha! Maybe you'll get lucky and there will be a storm ;-) 25% chance of rain today. Lightning within 10 miles closes the pool. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Pool avoiders should come and plan to swim here in the afternoon. This time of year, I'd put your chances of actually being able to start and complete a workout in the 3-4:30 PM time slot at 30-50% at best. The afternoon thunderstorm is pretty much a daily occurrence. (Because of that, and reduced PM pool hours that give me no wiggle room to wait out storms, have moved most swimming to early AM--the swim coach lets me have Lane 1 at the kids' club practices.) |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Originally posted by Hot Runner Having trouble visualizing how one can avoid swimming when living on an island. I think I was in the ocean almost every day when I lived in Hawaii, and I wasn't even training for something. Or is Guam a lot bigger than I think? Or maybe, having grown up land-locked, I was just obsessed with the novelty of having an ocean right down the road? There are definitely more visitors at a beach than islanders here, for sure. Sadly, we don't hit the beach as often as many dream they could. Honestly though there are really only a few beaches that you can actually swim at. We're surrounded by reef, and within the reef there are few spots deep enough to actually get a swim going. You also have to be very careful of strong current, and we have the meanest little fish here that will tear you up if you get too close to their homes. I actually have to drive to a pool, or to a beach where I can swim, and I try not to do it alone, so that means having to wrangle up some swim partners. Sometimes after a long workday I just would rather go home to the kids then swim. Unless I have a big race on schedule, it really is the one that gets shoved into the corner while biking and running get a lot of attention. I know! I'm an islander, I should want to live in the water! Hope you got into the pool, Chris! I have no storms coming, and zero other excuses, to be honest. Pinky promise next week! Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Those who can swim regularly, but don't should really feel shame today, because I swam. I had to work downstate, which means I had a pool available and was able to swim during my lunch. I get 90 days of warm weather. If we get a good day, it's a beach day. Of course the warm part of the bay hit 50 F this weekend, so I have a couple of weeks before I get to swim on a regular basis. The upside is there is no salt and there is nothing that can eat me in the water here. |

That's very understandable. The area I live in is called the Chain O'Lakes. It's in Lake County. Very literal naming too (guess the shape of Round Lake). There is a small one ~500 yards from my house. Not many of these are good for swimming in as most are mud bottom and/or have many weeds growing who knows what in them. The Chain part is also one of the busiest waterways in the nation, so one could say there are a few boats out and around. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed I guess it is no less remarkable than being a reasonably accomplished runner and swimmer, living in Hawaii for two years, running and/or swimming almost every day, and never doing a triathlon, meeting a triathlete, or even considering doing a triathlon! Seriously, I don't think the thought of doing a triathlon even crossed my mind! I guess it does depend on how swimmable the water is. There's "ocean" (nice quiet bay, no crazy currents, minimal wildlife--thinking of Waikiki or Ala Moana beach near Honolulu--the worst you can say about them is that at times there are so many people you might swim into someone, and the water's somewhat opaque; on most days it's like a big, warm pool with gentle baby waves, regularly spaced buoys and palm trees for sighting, and a shopping mall with an awesome food court across the street), then there's OCEAN (jellyfish, sharks, waves, break, rip tides, etc.). (And, I guess, there are probably "lakes", and LAKES.) |

Master 10208 Northern IL | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Think Alaska has more shoreline than the entire rest of the US. There are the Great Lakes in the Midwest, but something like Superior can still have ice floating in June. May have even reached July. |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Originally posted by jmkizer Originally posted by amd723 Originally posted by awm007 Originally posted by amd723 I believe Sean used EFS Liquid Shot when he won his age group at IM Texas 70.3. I believe he said he finished two of the flasks on the bike and part of one on the run. I've since tried the Kona-Mocha flavor a time or two. I find it less sweet than GU gels, but a pretty good flavor. It's not as tasty as the GUs (to me), but sometimes on a long ride/run gels can be too much sweetness and this is a welcome change. Some of the online reviews I read said the berry flavor was pretty bad, but I can't speak to that first-hand. It packs a lot of calories (400) for a relatively small container with good electrolytes. My only complaints are: -It's rather thick and doesn't always pour easily out of the flask it comes in. I feel like I'm not able to get all of it out easily while biking. -You have to remember to tear off the protective wrapper ahead of time (I've had to pull over on the bike before) -I would prefer some caffeine in there too, which it does not have. TL;DR - Kona-Mocha is kinda tasty. I believe 1 or more people have mentioned they use EFS products, but I can't remember who or how they said they use them! I'm considering ordering some to try them out, so talk to me- what do you like/ not like about it, which flavors are gross or yummy, do you use the individual shots or something else, what else? thanks! Thanks! I'm starting to have to think about/test out my IM nutrition plan and I don't handle gels well! I am thinking of more solids on the bike with maybe some EFS to mix things up if I can handle it and, if so, use it on the run. Â Good to hear the krona mocha is not bad since that is what I was looking at, plus the vanilla. Â Thanks for the tip on the protective wrapper! Oh, and lack of caffeine is a plus for me Solids on the bike work well for me unless I need to run afterward! I'm pretty sure that I'll be using either EFS or Infinit in Louisville. I'll probably mix in some chews (Clif Shot blok or similar). J - I'm the same as you - no solids if I have to run after! I've also been playing around with the infinit tripwire. What do you think? It mixes great and goes down easy - I'm just not sure I'm mixing in the right ratio LOL Stuffed it in my sports bra for my HM in April. |

31 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed I am still here and alive! I apologize for not being an active poster. I find that by the time I get through the posts and to the end I am a little overwhelmed about where to start. I am racing IM Victoria 70.3 this weekend. I learned that you have to make a separate reservation for your bike on the ferry but the wonderful Roberta from Victoria Clipper squeezed my bike on. I hope all your training/racing is going well! |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed POL post. Busy training multiple new hires at once. Tedious and time consuming because we have to rotate turns having control of the screens to presen information and discussion of the review process.
I applied to several on line programs for my BSN. I've been an RN for 30 years. If I want to move into another role in my company or another I will likely need that degree. An associates degree carries little weight.
Miss Thing is doing her thing with a summer class and working the orientation team. Thing one might mov out with a coworker. She's trying to find out if her cat can go with her. Not sure if the apartment allows cats. ( I am ready for him to go) Not much else happening here. Still strength training and getting on my bike when I can. |
