Were you on 185th or on Lackman just North of 185th when the dog came at you.... I've been chased by that little fart several times and I think I warned you bout him/her once.  Really sorry about the crash.

I've been chased down on the bike by dogs  countless times, bitten twice, pepper-sprayed at least 5 dogs and crashed once when my choice was either to hit the dog or take 5 other racers down with me in a peloton. Believe me the best thing to do is to get your water bottle out and squirt the bugger between the eyes.  He/she will leave you alone. If you are out of water get off the bike and walk by the dog being careful to avoid eye contact.

Bummer...glad you are safe and will recover. I always hate hearing about bike crashes...so glad there were folks there to assist you and get you to the hospital quickly.

I crashed last year and separated my shoulder and got a nasty concussion when I hit a street sign head first going pretty fast. I thought my season was over and I was able to do some other races and a HIM less than 4 months later. It was adjustment for sure as pain and things keep popping up.

This may sound strange right now, but I'm thankful for one aspect of my accident as it changed my perspective in two ways one of gratitude that I can do what I can and enjoy each and every ride, swim and bike I get to do. Other change was that I was going to be brave and do something outside my comfort zone as I learned I may not have another opportunity so here I am training for my first IM.

Helmets rock...glad you have folks there to help you heal up.

Did anyone find the dogs owner? You should not be responsible for any bills associated with this.

X 2

I hate to sound lawsuit-happy because I hate frivilous lawsuits, but this would obviously not be one of those. You have experienced very significant injuries as a direct result of their negligence. Not to mention a ton of pain and suffering.

You didn't mention if you could tell who owns the dog, but if you can go after them.

I'm very sorry for your crash, but very happy it wasn't worse. Get well soon.

Glad you are going to heal up well.  Please do follow up with this.  Get a lawyer.  Dog owners like this me off.  Their dog was free to roam around and they are responsible.  If nothing else you should have your medical bills paid.

Good luck and feel better.

Get better Linda.  It takes a good person to, when in the situation that you are in, take the time to offer others advice.  You will come back strong.

Sorry to hear about your crash. Get better soon. I have never crashed on a bike before but last July I was bit by a dog while running. This dog was very aggressive and continued to attack me, however he only bit me once. Everytime I see a dog while running now I immediately slow to a walk.

Dogs should be kept in a fence. So many accidents can be prevented.

Ugh, feel better soon, and I hope you heal quickly.

Lackman south of 185th (175th?) has that one really nasty hill....would hate to outrun a dog on that road.  I usually just fire off a squirt of Gatorade or whatever I'm drinking if the dog is going to catch me, normally does the trick.

I am so sorry to hear about your crash.  I crashed in Feb and know what it's like.

Heal up, take care of yourself, and you'll be back at it.

Oh gosh, gentle hugs! I saw your pictures too.

I agree with those above you mentioned going after the dog owner, at least to cover the damages. Also, the fire dept/police should have the name of the man who stopped to help you and he might be able to help you identify the dog since he was so close behind you.

As to the surgery, no personal experience there, but if it'll help you heal properly, go for it. You do look a bit "droopy" in that one photo

Sorry to hear about your accident Linda.

The only thing I have to offer is to keep an open mind during the recovery process. You might be suprised with how things turn out in the end.

Take Care and recover well

Sorry to hear about your accident.  It sucks to lose a season, but it's good not to lose what could be much more.  You'll be back.

Thank you all so much for the kind comments and well-wishes! It means a lot to me, and it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who's been through this. I actually sent the link to this thread to my parents, and my mom mentioned later, "You sure have a lot of nice friends there." I told her, "Yes, and I don't even know half of them." Just another example of what a strong community BT is.

I've been in a position to see my season go out the window after just starting.  I was hit by a car on my bike a couple of years back and had a fractured pelvis...had to pull out of several races and face a couple months mostly sedentary.  I know you're feeling down right now but try to stay positive.  Nothing you can do but focus on recovery and plan out the next steps.  It's early and the racing season is long so you can still get out there.  After the inital pain in the first week or two you might be able to do some spinning on a stationary or recumbant bike to keep the legs moving.  Definitely check with your doctor but also keep in mind that they tend to think in terms of the general population and not athletes so their suggested timelines tend to be on the long side.  Definitely don't push it but stay positive and motivated.

I'm not a fan of filing a lawsuit for every accident but in this case is sounds like the owners of the dog were neglegent and you paid the price.  I honestly think you deserve some compensation for your bills, suffering, and lost work days. Does your town have a leash law for dogs?

OH Linda, I'm so sorry this happened to you.  I just about cried when I read your title because I know how passionate you are about triathlons.  I also know you are one of the toughest chic's I know and that you will recover and be right back at it!  Stay positive and continue to be a strong inspiration for others.  Even in your report you're already talking about when you come back and that is awesome to see that kind of determination.  I don't know about anyone else but you have always inspired me.  I remember when I felt like quitting all together because of how horrible of a swimmer I was and you were right there to cheer me on.   Now its our turn to cheer you on.  Hang in there Linda!

Linda,
I am very sorry for your crash. I wish you recover fast and get back on the bike. I know this is much easier said than done, but you will pull trough. You are a triathlete after all. Make sure you heel well before restarting.
Linda, I was chased twice by a dog in that area, north of fire station on Lackman, between 185th and 178th. I finaly bought pepper spray for dogs and is a part of my every ride, in the pocket ready to go. Icome trough there usualy "flying", but am affraid that one of these days that dog will catch on that steep climb. I may try and see if I can determine who the owner is. I will also notify theanimal control. These things are a clear danger to cyclist.
Get better and hope to see you somewhere south in JC soon.

Hey Linda -

I remember meeting you at the KC Women's tri during its first year. Sorry to hear about your bike wreck - but it could have been so much worse than the broken clavicle and ribs! Thank God you were wearing your helmet! Sending lots of healing thoughts. Lawrence 70.3 will be waiting for you next year, heal up!
